redsbengalsbucks
that would seem to telegraph exactly what the play is going to be, but maybe that's the genius of it . . .Hence the problem having Kelly and then pass receiving TE's....Hey guys Reggie is in it must be a run!!! Their subbing Utecht pass pass pass! It's just as much on how Brat uses Kelly, as it is Kelly himself. Last year, we had problems protecting the QB, which led to more 3-step drops. Kelly responded by tying his career high in receptions (31) last year, while playing part of the season injured. Our QBs completed 73.8% of their passes to Kelly (31 of 42) last year. As a mild comparison, T.J. caught 67.1% (92 of 137) of passes thrown his way, while Chad caught 54.6% (53 of 97) of his targeted passes as starting receiving options. The other TE, Ben Utecht caught 57.1% (16 of 28) of throws intended for him. I'm not saying that Kelly is Tony Gonzalez or Dallas Clark, but he's not used like those players, either. What he does in the running game is greater that both of those players, though. A good situation would be to use Kelly alongside a receving TE (similar to what the Dolphins and Chiefs did last year), and Coffman would be able to push Utecht for that spot.I see the protection issues as an issue with Eric, Stacey and Levi last year....and Fitzsucktrick, now, I think we're past that...I am saying this team could be best served by using an extra OT in place of Kelley. That way, the protection is more sure, if it is a pass, and there is more beef to surge and make a hole for Benson. It is more an exercise in amimizing the roster, than calculating %'s or attempts. If Kelley has the mustard to make the squad, then we'll keep 3 TE's. I doubt they cut Utecht or Coffman. If anyone is cut then it will be Coates or Kelley. I hapen to like Coates, as he has good hands, can block and plays ST.Absolutely no offense, but you have an awful lot of confidence in a rookie and a 2nd year OT in saying "we're past that", related to the blocking issues from last season. Everyone had confidence in Andrews replacing Willie last year in coming off the Franchise tender, and we all know how that worked out. I believe both Smith and Collins can be great players, but both will have their fair share of ups and downs in the upcoming season. I don't see putting Kooista or any other backup OT in at TE solves the complaint of many who say the offense is more predictable with Kelly in the game. Some may point to Baltimore using the unbalanced line, but if you watch their games, it was Baltimore's answer to the "Wildcat" formation and was not their base offensive alignment. I'll agree to disagree with you in my opinion that Kelly is not anywhere close to being beat out by Dan Coats. I see Coffman as safe but it wouldn't surprise me at all for Utecht not to make the roster. As neither Coffman or Utecht are considered strong blockers at TE, I don't see any of them being an upgrade to an offense that wants to run the football better, according to what Marvin has been saying since last training camp through thie past weekend. Utecht, in my mind, was one of the most disappointing free-agent signings (even when healthy) we've had here in a few years and he'll need a very strong Summer to solidify his spot on the roster.Utech was the blocking back in Indy, he is a complete TE when he is healthy. That happened for maybe 2 games last season, if he gets dinged again he probably has to go, if not he is Kelly's replacement.
COB
Utecht, in my mind, was one of the most disappointing free-agent signings (even when healthy) we've had here in a few yearsI'm ready to see him with a better o-line. Perhaps he'll play better with an upgraged o-line and Carson. Also, check out www.benutecht.com which features Ben's christian country vocal stylings. Not my taste in music at all, but I admire anyone willing to put themselves out there like he does. He's like a musical special olympian. redsbengalsbucks
From the clips I have looked at from the Rookie camp, here are the players I'm going to watch over the next few months.Brown 84 looks like he has good hands, size and route running.Lucky 23 looks like he has short burst speed.Purify 14 looked very solid all around, not sure why he and Urrutia get to be at this camp though.Scott 35 he has quicks, either him or Lucky would be upgrade to last season.Richmond 19 best WR at the camp, even thoug he has not been playing ball long.Urrutia 18 looked slow and Orton 16 looked sloppy in his route running. HAPPYJAQ
Is Chick drunk in saying that Nduke and Hebert will "duke it out" to start at SS?That said, I do agree with him in saying that Lynch and White will be fighting for one spot at FS, and I regretfiully give Lynch the nod because of his versatility. That would be a tough cut for me, because I'm a big Marvin White fan. How effectively White comes back after having major recronstructive surgery on his knee will be a major factor. Even if he's PUP'd, one of the S's would have to go once he returns and who would get the axe?Do you guys think that Rey could beat out both Rivers and Dhani as the Nickle LB, next to Brandon Johnson? HoosierCat
Is Chick drunk in saying that Nduke and Hebert will "duke it out" to start at SS?I like Chinny, but he has to show he can stay healthy. In two seasons he's missed 7 games due to various dings. If there's one common thread running through most of the Bengals' cuts this year, it's a sharply decreased tolerance for injury. Henderson, Dexter, Perry, now Levi, these are all guys who appeared routinely on the injury report.

volcom69
I really hate how nobody thinks Rey will be playin the middle, but im not to sure myself and that sucks, i really dont want to see him move. I hope that roy beats out Duke to start, and have duke come in to help rush the passer, with Crocker and Roy on the field i think heads will be rollin then. HAPPYJAQ
Kaz, I made the same comment about Hebert earlier and couldn't agree more. He's just to good to special teams to let go...Army, I'm really glad you and Kaz recognize this. It says something to you both about how closely you follow to the team. Hebert quietly had a Pro Bowl-type of season on STs last year and showed he can adequate-to-good on the base defense. Marvin White will start out PUP'd, so we won't have to make a roster move until near midseason, and it's a good chance that White will be IR'd, to give him a chance to come back 100% in '10. He's coming off a complete reconstructive knee surgery as a DB, in which the injury occured very late in the last season. Even before that, Crocker had beat him out at FS, so it might be the best thing for his career. Lynch will need to show and prove and I'm hoping Nduke will be healthy the full season and show his tackling has improved. It's easy to see the Bengals are making an emphasis on stopping the running game with the moves this offseason.
