AGrizzlyBaer
http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=6894Posted: 10:45 a.m.The Bengals waived second-rounder Kenny Irons on Friday after he failed their physical, indicating just how difficult his rehab from reconstructive knee surgery has been. His future with the club and in the NFL remains murky. The Bengals needed Irons' spot to get to the 80-man limit for training camp and they now have 80 players listed on their roster including unsigned draft picks. In the past, when injured players have cleared waivers, the Bengals have re-signed them but have had to put them on a season-ending reserve list.Irons, out of Auburn, looked to be the answer to the Bengals' speed back problem during an exciting training camp highlighted by 65 yards on 10 carries in the intrasquad scrimmage. But six days later he tore his ACL on his fourth carry of his career in the preseason opener in Detroit.Irons told Bengals.com last week he had some setbacks because of scar tissue, but said the knee had felt better in the last month. jonf45uk
shame, by all accounts he could have a decent career.i wish him well!!jon
HoosierCat
Wow.Toss him on the Charles Fisher pile of 2nd round injury ruined washouts in Bengals history.Could be. But I expect that Hobson is right, this is mainly a roster-numbers-game move, and Irons will be re-signed and shelved. I don't think anyone was expecting him to play this year anyhow. skyline
I hope he is brought back in. I really liked the guy from all the things I've read.
HairOnFire
So Chris Perry's replacement lasted just four carries in a game that didn't count? (((sigh)))

I mean, he is a 2nd round pick whose rehab is nearly complete.Obviously we don't know the real state of his knee, but I'd thought there was a good chance he could contribute in the 2nd half of the year. Its only been in the last month or so that any improvement in his knee has been reported.Could someone pick him up? Sure, but I doubt it, especially with roster space so tight now that the NFL Europe is no more.
ShulaSteakhouse
I'm also curious as to why he isn't running and close to coming back at this point? I mean he's almost on a full calendar year of rehab, and from what I know, most ACL injuries are healed up and guys are pretty close to coming back by now. It's either a roster/#'s move to get him on the PUP for the year, or they are not satisfied with his efforts in rehab? Who knows. Of course Hobson doesn't give us that apparently.
fattyjay
Why couldn't they just put him on the IR without going through the waiver process? I certainly don't pretend to know the ins and outs of these rules, but it seems a little strange for them to have to waive him, re-sign him, then place him on the IR. redsbengalsbucks
I'd rather they keep him around and ditch 1 of the four TE's currently vying for 2 psoitions on this team. Oh well!
TJJackson
I had always heard that if you waive a player while that player is injured, and he is not picked up, he automatically picked back up by the waiving team and placed on IR....ie in essence, you can't truly waive a player til he is cleared medically. So in the ML era, we have Perry, Pollack, Irons, Thurman who all contributed one year or less and where 1st or 2eds. Ugly. From the 2003 draft, just CP, JJ and Scott Kooistra left. From the 2004 draft, just Chris Perry, Stacy Andrews and Robert Geathers. From the 2005 draft, just GuyCheck and Fanene (4th and 7th rnd picks!).From the 2006 draft, they still have their top 4 picks plus Kilmer. A break from tradition. From the 2007 draft, they've lost just two, Kenny Irons and Matt Toeaina. Taking it back further, from the 2002 draft, only Levi Jones remains2001, Chad, Rudi and TJ remain (what a year)2000, only Brad St. Louis remains1999, nobody1998, nobody1997, nobody1996, Willie AndersonGiven how short a career these guys have, why is the NFL draft such a huge media thing? HoosierCat
FWIW Irons' dad says the move was roster and cap-based, and that Kenny will be back (on IR).http://www.thelotd.com/ctrent/blog/2008/07...ny_will_be_back
markymark69
Surprising, no doubt. But apparently it had to be done. Gives us an indication of just how serious of an injury it was and how long it can linger. Too bad, I thought he was the steal of the draft last year. Ox
I saw this at work a few minutes ago and was shocked, initially After thinking about it I'm really not too surprised. If anything, it's a roster move. Moreover, I think that this is yet another boost of confidence for ol' 2 carry. I hope.
HAPPYJAQ
I think this sets the groundwork for the Bengals to draft another RB with the first pick next year. Even if Irons comes back, it's clear that the Bengals don't believe he'll be an every-down player (which makes his selection in the first place questionable, at best). If Perry doesn't resign and Rudi is cut, that would leave them with only DeDe on the roster. Even if Rudi is back, he would be nearly 30, which is the time that teams start looking at long-term replacements.
Orange and black fanatic
Like Ox, I was initially surprised then I got an idea of what the Bengals' plan is. I guess there are advantages to doing this over putting him on IR. Irons' father said it was for the team, roster-wise and payroll-wise.Another team could pick him off waivers but with him counting against the roster I don't think it will happen. The setback he had with the scar tissue has pretty much guaranteed that he won't be productive until next season.I think it also an idication with how satisfied they are with Rudi and Perry. I find this encouraging.
TJJackson
I find it very, very discouraging that they are counting on Two Carry Perry for anything except another season-ending injury

I find this encouraging. They got burned last year by hanging on to too many dinged-up players going into the season. Maybe this is just an indication that they are going to make more of an effort to fill the roster with healthy players? A guy can hope.... bwillycuse
I find it very, very discouraging that they are counting on Two Carry Perry for anything except another season-ending injuryWatson is still here. I think most of us are excited to see what a healthy Perry can do on this team. When he was healthy he was very productive. (about 5% of his career)He cant get hurt again can he? At least the idea that his next carry could be his last will add a bit of excitement to the season. Its going to be that much more fun!!! Football starts!!!!!
