Every team drafts a player w/ character issues every once in awhile. T.J. and Chad had their fair share of problems when they were younger and we've been burned and another turned out to be a good locker room guy.Worst case scenario happens and he f**ks up, cut him and move on and all you lose is a 5 round draft pick. Best case scenario takes place and we end up w/ an all-pro run stuffing DT. He reminds me of Shaun Rogers, attitude and all.

My only issue with taking a flyer on a character issue is doing it at a position we can't afford to be losing people at. The DT position has been far from stable and this pick didn't help in that matter whatsoever. With that being said, I hope this kid can pull his head out of his ass. To tell you the truth, I'm getting sick of saying that about the players drafted by the Bengals...

WHODEY !!!

we've already drafted our quota of nutjobs for the next ten years. No thank you. No more.

I don't think you understand - if he goes to Jail, this is a wasted pick, and on a team where all the talented veterans want out, you have to keep finding starters in the draft - and that means you cannot waste draft picks.

a 5th round pick is not the "nothing" you are making it out to be, Kentjett

Exactly. If there is a guy with talent but who is a jerk then maybe take a punt on him in the 7th round, possibly the 6th if he's that good. A 5th rounder should still have a good upside on and off the field.

Better measurables and size than Ellis? Is that what you all are saying?

Sounds ideal for a 5th round flier. He f**ks up, he's gone. It's the f**kin' 5th round, for f**kssake. Good spot to try and hit a homerun.

Jeebus. Every year with the panty bunching. Good lord.

I just don't know what his 5.02 40, 26 reps, and awesome short shuttles will do for him behind the bars at some California penal institution

Maybe the facility will have it's own football team

Not much.

OR, maybe he stays out of trouble, grows into his talent, and helps this team down the road.

Who knows? At any rate, there are NO sure things this late in the draft. So, yeah, take the flier.

He makes Chris Henry look like a chior boy

...so far...

look, I really, really hope this pick works out. I just don't see the sense of it. He was not the last DT on the board. DT is not the only need to be filled. THe Bengals have ZERO success taking on a hard case and making it work, let alone turning a late-round D-line player into a starter character issues or not.

Just when you think they get it, they pull a move like this. I sincerely hope it is not a wasted pick.

Welcome to Cincy Mr. Shirley, you can shout "Who-Dey" but you may not have any Who-Dey.

This guy can play

He is big

He takes plays off

He makes Chris Henry look like a chior boy

Yeah, I don't see that he is in KnuckleHead's psycho ward. This guy seems like he adjusted normally to Fresno. Its one ugly, mean town.

If he really is Knucklehead crazy, he'll be out of the NFL before he knew he was in it. Small risk, big upside.

Also it seems all of his problems stemmed from one incident, so, whatever. What we don't need is another alcoholic though, and I sure hope he doesn't have a drinking problem.

One DUI does not an alcoholic make no matter how many times you heard it in an AA meeting. ^_^

I know you are somewhat, uh, sensitive on this particular issue, Billy - but he has been cited more than once for drinking-related incidents - and I can already see the footage of an upcoming checkpoint stop on the eastside, with him staggering along a straight line while Chris Henry pukes out the side window

He's not a guy with some bad luck - he appears incapable of making good decisions in regards to what is right and what is wrong. Will need a permanent babysitter to stay out of trouble.

Sound familiar at all?

Good memory TJ. :P

Better #'s than the coveted Ellis and 1 glaring difference from other Character risks in the past. He has been punished for his actions in college and may have learned from them, unlike all the other pampered children that have come before him.

He lost almost his entire Senior year because of 1 DUI and a later driving with a suspended license incident. These actions are so common in this world, it is not funny. I am sure more than just myself on this board has had some similar problems in life and not become a routine law breaker because of them.

I am not thrilled with this pick, but the sheer upside has me intrigued. He could be the monster interior lineman that this team has needed for years.

It is what it is, guys. They're taking a risk, and any hinting that their lack of a scouting department has caused them to not know what they're getting themselves into is a joke.

Unlike some of you, I don't think the 5th round is too early to take a shot on something like this. The 2nd, 3rd, and probably 4th rounds like the Bengals have tried in the past, yes. But 5th? I don't think so.

It'd be interesting to look at all the 5th round picks over the past few drafts, and see what percentage of them are still on an NFL roster somewhere.

Agreed if it was 2nd I'd be screamin but in the 5th for a freakish big man who is a freakish athlete it's worth the chance if he pans out it's superb if he doesn't he won't be on the roster anyways like the lack of skill guy we may have picked if we didn't take shirley.....Man 6'5 330 guy whos gonna be called shirley lol thats some good stuff.

This guy has upside to the point of being in the DT rotation. Its a great pick based upon that. As for his alcohol, lets remember its easier to complete AA and swear off the stuff or moderate it than it is to sack Tom Brady or stuff LT.

I like this pick. I like what the Bengals did on defense, no check that, I think they did great with their D picks.

I don't know about the whole league, but the 5th round has been absolutely worthless to the Bengals going back years. Out of the last seven drafts, we have 1 5th rounder still on the roster: QB Jeff Rowe.

2006 - AJ Nicholson - moron, cut, currently out of NFL

2005 - Adam Keift - injured, cut, currently out of NFL I believe

2004 - Maurice Mann - signed off our PS by the fins, out of the NFL I believe

2003 - Khalid Abdullah - injured, cut, out of NFL

2002 - none

2001 - Victor Leyva - gone, still in football?

2000 - Nick Williams (Luchey) - let go by us twice IIRC

Shirley works out, fine, if not, nothing new.
