Utech signed!

Contract seems a little high - Hobson says 3y|3M/y avg. I hope he can block.

The hidden bonus good part - again, this signing (if the Colts don't match) will not negatively impact the possibility of comp picks in 2009, because he is a RFA rather than a UFA

Hell yeah!

"Should the Colts decline to match, Utecht will join Cincinnati. A signing by the Bengals will not require the Bengals to compensate Indianapolis with a future draft choice, because Utecht entered the NFL as a college free agent and was not tendered by the Colts beyond draft-status level."

Good news! If this is any indication of what's in store for the draft, as far as aggressiveness, we're going to be in good shape...or really pissed off if we f it up.

As for Chris Perry, I'm pretty sure THIS is the season he finally earns the starting RB position.

Don't Push Me?

How did you get Hairs log on info?

Nothing to hate or complain about with regard to this off-season. They have aggressively moved to address weaknesses through free agency. They have reached, and even in failing to get Rogers/Robertson, showed that they are willing to be far more creative than they have previously been.

So we may finally get a tight end to help in the passing game? Swizzle.

Well done to the Bengals.

As business closed Friday the Bengals and his agent had yet to hear from the Colts regarding the status of tight end Ben Utecht and there doesn't have to be any voice contact by the midnight deadline.

No answer by midnight would make Utecht Cincinnati property. Or, at 11:59 p.m., the Colts could fax a match of the Bengals' three-year, $9 million offer to Paul Brown Stadium and keep him.

The Colts are aparently still mulling it over and agent Chris Murray isn't sure when he'll know where his client is headed.

"But we may hear nothing at all," Murray said Thursday.

That would give Utecht to the Bengals.

"We haven't heard anything," Murray said. "Coach (Tony) Dungy has spoken to Ben but we didn't get a handle on which way they're going to go. It's been an interesting process. One thing is for sure: We'll know some time soon."

With 68 catches over the past two seasons, the 6-6, 250-pound Utecht would give the Bengals' their most prolific pass catching tight end since Tony McGee caught 52 balls for Bruce Coslet and Dick LeBeau in 2000.

It could also change how the Bengals use their roster as they come out of training camp. For the last several years under Marvin Lewis they have gone with two tight ends instead of three, anchored by the blocking of starter Reggie Kelly. The other tight ends are Dan Coats, who played a lot as a rookie last season, and Nate Lawrie, who played in three games last year with two starts.

I would think he's a Bengal. I mean, what are the Colts going to do, wait until 11:59 tonight, then shout "PSYCHE!" and match the deal?

Welcome aboard, Ben.

No but god-dell will think of something.....

MIdnight came and went Friday without tight end Ben Utecht and his agent hearing from the Colts.

Indianapolis had until then to match the Bengals' three-year, $9 million offer, so the belief is the club didn't and that he is now Cincinnati property. No one is going to make it official until Saturday.

"He is really excited to join the team and make contributions to help make the Bengals a Super Bowl contender," agent Chris Murray said in a 12:11 a.m. text message.

The Colts were aparently still mulling it over all week. Utecht spoke with head coach Tony Dungy and quarterback Peyton Manning, but couldn't get a sense for a decision.

Bratkowski knows how to use the TE. He used the TE a lot when he was in Seattle. That hasn't been the problem.

So you say JoeWrong. In Bob's term as OC at Seattle in 1997 he landed his team an 8-8 record. Not too different than what we've been stuck with for far too long here in Cincinnati.

He's used TE's just as much here. Check the stats. It might give you something new to do. <_<

All we need is a great RB and we'll be the best Offense in the NFL!

They can't double team all these guys now can they?

WR. CJ/TJ/Henry

TE. Utecht/Kelly

RB. McFadden??? Mendenhall???

In a couple of years we might be able to shape Kenny Irons into a decent back. However there is probably not a chance in hell we will ever get Mcfadden.

Agreed. McFad has way too much baggage

There are some scouts that have Mendenhall ranked above DMC, though it might be a case of "Bruiser" vs. "Scat-back".
