cincyhokie
Contract seems a little high - Hobson says 3y|3M/y avg. I hope he can block. The hidden bonus good part - again, this signing (if the Colts don't match) will not negatively impact the possibility of comp picks in 2009, because he is a RFA rather than a UFAHell yeah!http://www.1530homer.com/pages/lancesBlog.html "Should the Colts decline to match, Utecht will join Cincinnati. A signing by the Bengals will not require the Bengals to compensate Indianapolis with a future draft choice, because Utecht entered the NFL as a college free agent and was not tendered by the Colts beyond draft-status level."Good news! If this is any indication of what's in store for the draft, as far as aggressiveness, we're going to be in good shape...or really pissed off if we f it up. HairOnFire
I wonder if this spells the end for Perry. Well, I'd say it's two to the back of the head for Tab Perry. As for Chris Perry, I'm pretty sure THIS is the season he finally earns the starting RB position.
generaldreedle
I wonder if this spells the end for Perry. We can only hope to erase this draft day infamy with kicking his butt to the curb. Besides, it frees up a ton of space on the IR.True and funny!
Thurmanation
31 catches for 364 yards last year..do the math! This is EVERYTHING i wanted from the Bengals this off season so far!

gregstephens
The word is Godell is going to block it...apparently, Mike Brown's cashback bonus on his Discover Card isn't redeemable for TEs.That was funny as crap.
membengal
Nothing to hate or complain about with regard to this off-season. They have aggressively moved to address weaknesses through free agency. They have reached, and even in failing to get Rogers/Robertson, showed that they are willing to be far more creative than they have previously been.So we may finally get a tight end to help in the passing game? Swizzle.Well done to the Bengals.

DDOGG
As business closed Friday the Bengals and his agent had yet to hear from the Colts regarding the status of tight end Ben Utecht and there doesn't have to be any voice contact by the midnight deadline. No answer by midnight would make Utecht Cincinnati property. Or, at 11:59 p.m., the Colts could fax a match of the Bengals' three-year, $9 million offer to Paul Brown Stadium and keep him. The Colts are aparently still mulling it over and agent Chris Murray isn't sure when he'll know where his client is headed. "But we may hear nothing at all," Murray said Thursday. That would give Utecht to the Bengals. "We haven't heard anything," Murray said. "Coach (Tony) Dungy has spoken to Ben but we didn't get a handle on which way they're going to go. It's been an interesting process. One thing is for sure: We'll know some time soon." With 68 catches over the past two seasons, the 6-6, 250-pound Utecht would give the Bengals' their most prolific pass catching tight end since Tony McGee caught 52 balls for Bruce Coslet and Dick LeBeau in 2000. It could also change how the Bengals use their roster as they come out of training camp. For the last several years under Marvin Lewis they have gone with two tight ends instead of three, anchored by the blocking of starter Reggie Kelly. The other tight ends are Dan Coats, who played a lot as a rookie last season, and Nate Lawrie, who played in three games last year with two starts. HoosierCat
I would think he's a Bengal. I mean, what are the Colts going to do, wait until 11:59 tonight, then shout "PSYCHE!" and match the deal?Welcome aboard, Ben.

chrishcovga
http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/benga...echt-bengal.aspaccording to Mark Canutte, The Colts don't plan on matching the deal, so Utecht is a Bengal Officially at Midnight. DDOGG
MIdnight came and went Friday without tight end Ben Utecht and his agent hearing from the Colts. Indianapolis had until then to match the Bengals' three-year, $9 million offer, so the belief is the club didn't and that he is now Cincinnati property. No one is going to make it official until Saturday. "He is really excited to join the team and make contributions to help make the Bengals a Super Bowl contender," agent Chris Murray said in a 12:11 a.m. text message. The Colts were aparently still mulling it over all week. Utecht spoke with head coach Tony Dungy and quarterback Peyton Manning, but couldn't get a sense for a decision. With 68 catches over the past two seasons, the 6-6, 250-pound Utecht would give the Bengals' their most prolific pass catching tight end since Tony McGee caught 52 balls for Bruce Coslet and Dick LeBeau in 2000. BengalszoneBilly
Someone needs to e-mail Bob Bratkowski and let him know he needs to download an update for his playbook.Title it "The TE position is now a good option. Use it!!"
DDOGG
Oh yeah, he is going to be a great player for the Bengals......Although with our luck he will probably get a fractured forearm in the pre-season, and be out for the rest of the season... JoePong
Bratkowski knows how to use the TE. He used the TE a lot when he was in Seattle. That hasn't been the problem.

That hasn't been the problem. So you say JoeWrong. In Bob's term as OC at Seattle in 1997 he landed his team an 8-8 record. Not too different than what we've been stuck with for far too long here in Cincinnati. He's used TE's just as much here. Check the stats. It might give you something new to do. ChadJohnson-85
All we need is a great RB and we'll be the best Offense in the NFL! They can't double team all these guys now can they?WR. DDOGG
In a couple of years we might be able to shape Kenny Irons into a decent back. However there is probably not a chance in hell we will ever get Mcfadden.

McFad has way too much baggageThere are some scouts that have Mendenhall ranked above DMC, though it might be a case of "Bruiser" vs. "Scat-back".
