Bengals name Zimmer

By GEOFF HOBSON

January 15, 2008

5:25 p.m.

The Bengals made the move official Tuesday and named former Cowboys and Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer to the same job in what looks to be a return to the 4-3 defense.

Like the man who hired him, head coach Marvin Lewis, Zimmer arrives after spending seven years as coordinator with one perennial playoff contender (Dallas), one year with another team (Atlanta), and winning a Super Bowl ring as a secondary coach with the 1995 Cowboys.

He's the third coordinator hired by Lewis in his six seasons and brings more experience in the role than Chuck Bresnahan (four years in Oakland) and rookie coordinator Leslie Frazier.

"Mike has coordinated defenses at a high level in the NFL for a number of years," Lewis said in a press release. "This is obviously a very important hire for me and for our organization. I'm excited about utilizing Mike's ability to develop our young players and our defensive scheme."

Zimmer, 51, arrives with a steel-belted resume. In the past few seasons, he has turned down the Nebraska head coaching job before it was offered to Bill Callahan, the day after he got hired in Atlanta last year he interviewed for the Chargers' head job, and Bill Parcells retained him when he took the head job in Dallas in 2003.

In Zimmer's 13 years with Dallas, the Cowboys defense earned seven top 10 rankings in fewest yards allowed, and the team advanced to the postseason seven times. His 2003 defense led the NFL at 253.5 yards allowed per game as the team posted a 10-6 record.

So, which one of you will be the first to start a thread entitled..."Zimmer must go!!!!"....and what's the over/under on how long it'll take?

<_<

I'll say week 2.

Now we got another scapegoat?

Yep, just how Mike and Marv like it!

I hope Zim has his 401k in good shape.

Hey, every coach starts a countdown to when they get fired the moment they are hired.

Zimmer can only do better. He'll need to be to handle that brutal sched they have next season.

Check back with me on that after the next regular season game against Cleveland. If we give up anything more than 30 against the Browns, then it'll be me.

Kidding, but to be realistic, Zimmer would have to really try to screw up a scheme bad enough to eclipse Chucky's pathetic job in that first matchup of 2007.

Marvin's line caught my attention when I heard this statement read on the radio this afternoon.

"Mike has coordinated defenses at a high level in the NFL for a number of years," Lewis said in a press release. "This is obviously a very important hire for me and for our organization. I'm excited about utilizing Mike's ability to develop our young players and our defensive scheme."

Fantastic move...Zimmer is a proven commodity who obviously knows how to mold young talent, and I look for our defense to be vastly improved in 2008. And at this point, anything in the 16-20 range would be a vast improvement.

Good Hire, this means we most likely will stick with a 4-3, which is a good move for young players like Geathers, Brooks, Peko, Jeanty etc. who incidently are the only real notable players on our D outside the secondary. Guy was a secondary coach when he won a SB, so that has to bode well.

I heard on 1530 that the Bengals are offering contracts to both Landon and Dhani. Thoughts? Good move IMHO if we end up locking a veteran backup and our most productive LB over the past few years. Hopefully that might open up the possibility for a semi-big name FA D-lineman, since if we have Jeanty, Landon, Dhani, Brooks and maybe Odell back you'd doubt we splurge on a LB, but whatev its all speculation.

I thought he was known for running a 3-4. I know he has ran a 4-3 but I'm pretty sure he prefers a 3-4 style of defense but he will use whatever he has the team to run w/.

No, it's the opposite of this. He was always a 4-3 coach, but when he took the job with Parcells he did what he could in a 3-4 scheme, and didn't do too bad of a job. His base is 4-3 though.

Sure, he coached the 3-4 defensive setup the personnel allowed at the time, meaning he had available a DL big and solid enough to play nose tackle. I seriously can't even begin to think the Bengals currently possess someone who could fill this bill. We operate defensively under the 4-3 scheme, and will continue to do so unless Marvin totally blows things up and changes this too. Who knows?

This is great. Dallas had the #1 Defense in 2003, and their offense sucked. Quincy Carter and Troy Hambrick. This is such an upgrade over Chuck. I'll never forget last year when J. Smith said that what they do never works. That was a bad sign. I have renewed hope. Just give the damn trophy to the Pats and lets get started on the 08 season. For the record, you have to have great corners to slow them down. Let's hope Hall and JJ can shut down some wide receivers and Zimmer can bring the heat.

2009 Superbowl?

Bengals 24

Giants 13

MVP - Bengals new running back Felix Jones

I was talking to a big Cowboys fan yesterday, and he said Zimmer works very well with linebackers and not so much with DBs. I don't know how accurate that is, but I found it somewhat interesting considering we fired our LB coach, but kept Coyle on in the secondary.

I'm guessing we'll still probably find a new LB coach, but I thought it was interesting all the same.
