Injury Report/Geathers Thread

Only with Marvin can the term "permanent" be relative. He'll be a permanent linebacker as long as he has to be one. He'll move back to DE eventually.

Define "permanent" has it relates to the NFL. I can't think of a player or coach that is permanent. My fear is that LB is permanently snake bit this season, Geathers will go on the IR after this weekend.

Yeah, he's there until Marvin finds his "permanent" replacement.

Probably in next years draft....

Yeah, but you know how that will go: first, the replacement will hold out and miss camp. Then he'll get shoved in with insufficent conditioning and tear or pull something that puts him out for six or so weeks -- during with time he'll get 16 DUIs and shoot someone's grandma, and so be suspended for 200 years by GOD-el. Thus, back to Geathers.

Curnutte adds that Chris Perry has indeed returned to practice.

Does anybody else feel like there's a better than 50% chance that C. Perry plays Sunday?

Curnutte walked his earlier comment about Perry practicing back in a later update. Perry was indeed on the sidelines and outfitted in pads, etc., and doing some kind of undefined practice-like activities...but since the 3-week window in which he's allowed to practice without being on the 53-man roster hasn't started...he wasn't "officially" practicing.

Or something like that.

I don't know what their plans are, but Marvin claims he does. I don't expect to see him Sunday, but getting him back in there for Pitt would be nice.

You're probably right, I just have this unsupportable feeling that we will see him sooner rather than later.

I think its great, first move until we move "permanently" to a 3-4!

Oh God...here comes there endless 3-4 vs. 4-3 debate. Isn't it obvious that Marvin Lewis is solid in his resolve with the current defensive line scheme?

I hope so. We need a damn running back.

With the position ravaged by injuries, the Cincinnati Bengals have moved left defensive end Robert Geathers to strongside linebacker, and he could stay there for a while.

Geathers

"He's a linebacker now," coach Marvin Lewis said. "Permanently right now. As permanent as right now can be."

The Bengals have lost four straight games following their opening-week victory over the Baltimore Ravens and, with Lewis forced to scramble at the linebacker position, the defense has fallen to a No. 30 statistical ranking in the league.

Geathers had never lined up at linebacker before this season, but injuries during the Oct. 1 loss to New England forced him to play there, and he actually started last week's game at Kansas City at the strongside spot. Now he will play there on Sunday against the New York Jets, and apparently for the foreseeable future.

"It takes some getting used to, because you're out in space, and I'm not accustomed to the [pass] drops and things like that," Geathers said. "There are a lot of things, technique-wise, that are entirely new. But if that's where they need me, I'll do it."

Despite having only one sack in five games after a breakout 2006 season in which he posted 10½ sacks and consistently disrupted opponents' blocking schemes, Geathers remains the Bengals' best outside pass-rush threat. So in most third-down situations, he will move from linebacker to end, and rush from a three-point stance.

Eleven-year veteran Bryan Robinson, a former starter, will take over at left end.

Cincinnati rewarded Geathers' performance in 2006 by signing him in January to a six-year contract extension with a maximum value of $33.7 million. The deal included $12.5 million in bonuses.

In five games this season, the former University of Georgia star, a fourth-round selection in the 2004 draft, has 17 tackles, one sack, three passes defensed and a forced fumble.

Who was the guy who told me I was stupid, and to do some research before I said Geather wasn't a great pass rusher??

Sorry fella try again

Today's report from Curnutte...anyone else getting the feeling we aren't gonna be seeing Brooks the rest of the year?

Rudi doubtful; A. Brooks out

UPDATED: 2:05 p.m.

Linebacker Ahmad Brooks (groin), wide receiver Antonio Chatman (hamstring) and linebacker Caleb Miller (back) did not practice today and are out for the game Sunday against the Jets.

Tailback Rudi Johnson (hamstring) and linebacker Corey Mays (hamstring) were listed as doubtful, and neither player practiced. Coach Marvin Lewis said he would make a decision Sunday on Johnson.

Right tackle Willie Anderson (knee) is questionable and practiced in limited fashion.

The following seven players are probable and did practice full today: safety Dexter Jackson (knee), linebacker Rashad Jeanty (shin), wide receiver Chad Johnson (ankle), tight end Reggie Kelly (ankle), defensive end Jonathan Fanene (knee), cornerback Deltha O'Neal (back) and safety Madieu Williams (back).

We'll see Brooks again.

The question is for how long. Groin and hamstring pulls are notorius for popping up again and again and even when players are declared healthy...like Rudi and Chatman were prior to last weeks game...they're not. Hamstrings that seem healthy again often fail their first real test. And depending on their severity groin pulls can take more than two months to heal.

The worst part about Brooks situation is the way a prolonged injury can derail his development to such a degree that the season could end without the Bengals really knowing what they have in Brooks.
