Stripes
The defense outplayed the offense for about 75% of the game, both against McGahee and in getting the six takeaways. The defensive line got a ton of pressure on McNair throughout the game, and Chuck had the balls to blitz him over and over and over. You all saw the game, so there isn't much to say. I just want to make sure Chuck gets the props he deserves for once!

I'm wondering if that quote by Hines at the end of last season had anything to do with it.But no matter why, he called a HELL of a game. I've certainly been one of his biggest detractors, but if he keeps that up I'll be his biggest fan.
HoTbOy
Im a CBreshnahan basher also, but he does get credit for this one...It was good to see pressure on the QB and not always dropping into zone coverage...GOOD JOB CHUCK...I hope he has that same mentality when we play passing teams like the Colts & NE and not get picked apart in zone... Softer zone defenses work against inaccurate QBs who basically have to try for the home-run ball because they can't string a drive together. That doesn't work against Manning and Brady. Or McNair, for that matter. But for all 3, if you can pop them in the mouth enough they'll start missing open receivers. It worked last night, and I'm really hoping that last night's outcome is the sort of convincing argument they need to keep it around. agreen_112
He called a good game, we took advantage of oppurtunities that were made by the PLAYERS. This D has good talent. Bres still called some bad plays though... One which stands out in my head the most was a soft cushion by the DB's on 3rd and short. The Ravens set up in twins left and the Bengals had the far corner playing 5 yards off his man and the other corner about 10-12 yards off his man. McNair seen this and called a hot route to quick pass it to the slot reciever. Luckily, the line (lineman or LB) got their hands up and blocked the pass or it would've been an easy first down. HoosierCat
Pass rush and pass D generally came up big last night. Plus they got a bit of help from the refs in the end zone negating a Heap TD.Run D...not so much. In fact the Ravens might have escaped with a win despite all the turnovers if Billick had kept the ball on the ground. Run D gave up 4.5 YPC and the Balti fullback in particular was gashing the crap out of us.
ShulaSteakhouse
Yep, why they didn't run the ball at the end amazed me - thought they had time outs left and/or enough time on the clock to run it - why they didn't - who knows.Despite the great plays Landon made all night - he did get blown up on some running plays I noticed (or just blocked out).I wanna see the D play like that every week - other than the run D and some poor tackling in the open field at times - making plays, hitting people hard, flying all over the field - 4-5 guys running to the ball every down, and enough of that failed soft zone - this defense has to take chances and rely on it's athleticism and speed - not it's tackling - if they want to win games. They have two good pass rushers, use them early and often. At least Brooks looked like the real deal at times last night. Was in the backfield quite a bit. Fell in love with his gameplan and it cheated him in the end.
membengal
Part of the reason they didn't run the ball at the end was they were not exactly gouging the Bengals up the gut, fellas. They had a few decent runs, but those were outside. At that point in the game, with a tired line, I think it wasn't as easy as you all are making it out to be to simply cram it down their throats. Peko and Myers really were strong at the point of attack, and Brooks, sick as he was, filled the holes well.I have no complaints about what ChuckD got done, and send him all my fandom love. That was a well planned, well called defensive gameplan.
Jet23
That is the fastest I have seen the Bengals D play in a loooong time! It goes to show you that the preseason means absolutely nothing. Chuck definitely deserves some credit here. IMO the 6 turnovers were the direct result of everyone flying to the ball. I just hope they were not just motivated by the National audience. I would love to see that every game.I will do one better. I am going to give credit to Paul Alexander. There was a lot of changes on the OL during the game and they did a pretty good job of keeping Carson on his feet against the leagues best defense. Man, I must be in a good mood... They had a few decent runs, but those were outside. Dead...freaking...on. The reason the outside runs worked was because they were used infrequently AND due to them being run directly into the teeth of crashing ends, blitzing LB's, and a remarkable number of corner and safety blitzes. Personally, I don't care very much how great the Ravens backup RB or FB looked because in most games...by design...they're not going to get the ball enough to beat you. That said, I'm betting the Bengals could have slowed the Ravens running game by holding Madieu Williams and Landon Johnson back, or task Robert Geathers with the same stilting outside containment burden they've placed on Justin Smith. But who wants to see that?
IckeyShuffle
Drafting Corners #1 the past 2 seasons can allow for this kind of defensive style. Let them play fast and physical and cover for 4 seconds while sending the house against poor OL's and old Qb's. It was an aggressive style and I was shocked it was the Bengals. Kudos to Myers and Geathers for incredibly athletic interceptions for d-linemen or any football player for that matter. Kudos to Leon Hall, played almost flawless. But my gameballs go to the Linebackers whom I doubted most but they played like men. L.Johnson, A. Brooks, C. Miller and L. Marshall. There were huge and fast, like missles. Team speed, I just couldn't believe my eyes after the preseason performances. I wanted to believe, now I can. I know Hobson already mentioned this but I couldn't help but remember about being at the home opener against the Cardinals in 1988 where the game ended in a spirited 4 down goaline stance. Fulcher stuffed the last play and ran off the field. We went on to a 12-4 record, Boomer was AFC MVP and we got 36 seconds away from the Lombardi trophy. Let's finish those 36 seconds in the Big Show this year.Who Dey!

Bobcat Bengal
Great game. The B-Fense bailed out the offense this time. The Defense was working on all phases last night.Great Secondary play by Hall and O'neal. Suprisingly, JJ was the quiet one.Great LB play by Landon and LeMarshall. Brooks looked good too in his first start.Great D-Line play by Geathers Peko and company. Way to seal the deal eminem. (Mike Myers)Chad may of gotten his with his anti-climatic TD celebration, but the Chucky B and the Defense get the game ball for sure. mgilgris
Was it Chuck's good play calling or Brian Billick's bad offensive play calling. I feel our Run Defense was again lacking and on the drives the Ravens took it to us, they continued to feed the ball to Willis. I mean 3 and 1 and he throws ????? Dont get me wrong I loved watching the agressive Defense, but I also feel as if they Ravens were thinking pass first and run second...Just one man's opinion. PS i was glad to see Heap not have a great game, I am tired of him getting the usual 70-80 yrd games on us
HoosierCat
Was it Chuck's good play calling or Brian Billick's bad offensive play calling.I'd say both played their roles. And I agree: Chuck had Brian's number all night and Brian refused to change it. But any plan is only as good as the guys who execute it and last night our D played lights out, and the Ravens' offense played like crap, too. Dadraftnick
Bresnahan should run this game plan through the coppier and play this type of high pressure, blitz your a$$ off, deffense ALL THE TIME ,AGAINST EVERYONE ! Then sit back and dare everyone to try to stop it.That is how the bear 46 defense did it. Thats what the teams like the Ravens and Steelers do.These guys can do this type of defense all day, its the read and react stuff that makes guys think too much and gets the team into trouble. When we have a game plan like last night where guys just cut loose and attack, attack, attack we cause turnovers and Carson gets more chances to score.I think Bresnahan overthinks this stuff sometimes instead of going with works ,which is blitzing.I think that we would have beat Indy if we would have had a game plan like last night's instead of the stop the run plan they used. redsfan2
Considering last seasons overall subpar performance by the defense ........... not to mention the "San Diego Suicide" ......... does anyone else think that Bresnhan needs a season of these to keep his job ???????Have to believe that after last year he's on a pretty short leash. After that the defense was spotty at best. The injury bug bit the hell out of us last year ... not to mention the suspension bug as well so there were extenuating circumstances. " But". At the end of the day its results that count.Coach hasn't mentioned it, but he also supported Frazier .... right up to the day he fired him.
