Perry (Chris) hopeful; Jones returns

A Chris Perry sighting Tuesday.

He rejoined the team after spending training camp rehabbing a dislocated ankle in Atlanta, but wouldn't say much more than he's hopeful he can contribute once he comes off the physically unable to perform list (PUP) after the fifth game of the season.

Another welcome sighting Tuesday was the appearance of tackle Levi Jones, who showed up for practice in full gear for the first time this preseason. Also Tuesday before practice fullback Jeremi Johnson said he expects to play Monday night in Atlanta.

HENDERSON TO IR: The Bengals on Tuesday placed first-year linebacker Eric Henderson on the Reserve/Injured list. Henderson suffered a wrist fracture in Saturday's home game against New Orleans.

Curnutte adds a detail Hobs left out...

Wearing braces on both knees, Bengals left tackle Levi Jones is on the field this afternoon for practice. It is the first time he has practiced with the team this year.

Jones did not run with the first-team offense on its walkthrough. Andrew Whitworth stayed at left tackle.

Good to see some progress, tho.

Certainly good news all around.

I have a feeling Chris Perry is going to make a noteable difference this year... a difference he wouldn't have made with a healthy Irons.

Next season Irons will make us forget Chris Perry completely!

Could be. I'm still not convinced Perry is a goner though.

Yeah, there's certainly no reason to rush him out the door now. He's signed through 2009 and his cap charge is peanuts (about $1.5m this year).

I don't see anyone advocating cutting Perry. For my part, I am an eternal optimist on weird things, and still think he can help this season.

As for the rest of the update, for a change, nothing but good news on the injury front.

Curnutte updates:

Wearing braces on both knees, Bengals left tackle Levi Jones is on the field this afternoon for practice. It is the first time he has practiced with the team this year.

Jones did not run with the first-team offense on its walkthrough. Andrew Whitworth stayed at left tackle.

Jones' appearance provides a lift to a team that has been hit hard by injuries in the preseason.

"I don’t think he’s going to be an every-day practice guy, but I think he’ll be able to get enough work where he feels comfortable and we feel comfortable with him each and every week," head coach Marvin Lewis said after practice.

Jones was off limits to reporters after practice. The team did not announce his return. He was seen on the field during the first 30 minutes of the two-hour practice.

Jones' practice routine could be similar to that of right tackle Willie Anderson during the 2006 season, Lewis said.

"We’ve been working with him for four weeks now. We wouldn’t put him out there if he’s not ready to go."

Lewis anticipates that Jones will play Monday night in the Bengals’ third preseason game at Atlanta.

Starting cornerback Johnathan Joseph and starting fullback Jeremi Johnson are practicing, as well.

Not practicing are defensive end Robert Geathers (rib strain) safety Herana-Daze Jones, cornerback Blue Adams and tailback Quincy Wilson (chest).

It would be nice to have Perry for the first half of the season. He could lessen the blow of not having Henry. If he starts the season on PUP though... I don't look for a ton of contribution from him. He was having a tough time getting back into the swing of things last year - and I don't see him being a big priority anymore.

If he wants a shot at being a contributor, he needs to find a way to get on the field as early as possible. That said, as much as I've mocked the guy, I'd welcome him back with open arms if he could actually take some pressure off of Rudi.

It would at least definitely add another weapon. Perry's most valuable skill in my opinion is pass catching out of the backfield. Just something else to keep the defense guessing

I don't see how they have to guess about s**t when they see him come out and line up in the backfield on 3rd down and long. He's obviously in there as a receiver! Stevie Freakin' Wonder can see that! <_<

Orgasmic. Let them shift coverage toward Perry. All the more open Chad & TJ will be!

Well a screen play on 3rd down can be quite effective against a cover 2 defense, but IMHO not as much when that's almost exclusively what that RB is used for off the bench.

And BTW, as harsh as I've been on been on Perry, I've hardly been alone. Hell, even Hair has taken his shots at him!

Aren't you concerned about his health again!!!

Yeah, there's always that concern with Chris Perry. I can't just assume he'll get hurt though.

Perry is a bum !

The problem is, he's the only acceptable talent behind Rudi !

- If Jim Anderson is known for being a great mentor and tutor to runningbacks for oh, let's see, 25 years???, then I seriously doubt it was his decision to draft Perry over Stephen Jackson.

- A healthy Perry is definitely better than Kenny " special teams " Watson, and Quincy " I'm only here because I run sorta' like Rudi " Wilson.

The overall problem with the running backs is that we didn't draft the " best available " running back when we had the Chance !!

Somebody ask " In Marvin trust " Lewis and Mike the " Anti - Brown " Brown , why the Hell did we draft Chris " Ouuuweeey " Perry over Stephen Jackson in the first place ?????

Anywho, since we have to make lemonade out of horses**t, a healthy Perry would be welcomed back.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Through those trades with Denver and St. Louis, the Bengals were able to draft Robert Geathers and Stacy Andrews. It wasn't all that horrible, IMO.

Just how I see things,

Annoucer:"It's week 4 and Monday Night. Patriots are in town and it's the second quarter about 4:45 to play before the half."

"It's 3rd and long and Oh My Chris Perry is in the game for the first time after coming back from the dislocated ankle!!"

"Palmer takes the snap, looks left, throws a soft liner to Perry on the screen pass"

<Crowd goes silent>

"The ball hit Perry on the numbers and broke some ribs, on his way down to the ground gravity sped his mass up enough and he shattered both collar bones, wrist, and ankle"

Dammit, did he score? That's all I want to know. I don't care that Perry was hurt again...because I'm used to that. All I want to know is did he finally score?

Don't leave me hanging, Danimal. I've been waiting YEARS for that guy to score a TD.

If he was getting paid per TD, then his contract might actually be worth it
