CPalmer9
Bengals.comAs Bengals defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan braced himself against a chilly wind at Wednesday’s arctic Senior Bowl workouts, he admitted all things are on the table for change in 2007. From making free safety Madieu Williams a cornerback, to switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4, to isolating what area they need with what everyone is assuming is a defensive first-round pick at No. 18, Bresnahan stressed that it’s too early to lock into any directionMadieu to move to cornerback then who plays free saftey? Kewain, draftpick??

fattyjay
I think more than anything he is just try to stay flexible heading into free agency and the draft. All of the things he referred to are possibilities but not necessarily the direction they will go. personally would love to see Madieu move to CB, along with the possibility of us drafting another safety. I just don't think that Madieu is durable enough to stay at safety at this level. Think about the starting corners of JJ and Williams, then add a safety through the draft or FA along with KK and DJax. That might just shore up the pass defense enough to see some improvement. I believe he also did not rule out the possibilty of drafting a LB to steady that position. Chuck made it sound as if Caleb some having some off the field issues. Anyone have a clue what that's about?
jditty47
we need a hitter in our backfield, we have solid tacklers and coverers but not a hitter, i would love if madeiu moved to corner or nickle or rotated with a hitter and dexter jackson. that interview with chuck sucked worse than marvins interviews. it honestly was at the most pointless of points in a year to interview him. Please understand that is a total W-A-G.As for Bres, sounds to me like he's totally confused about anything that's going to happen next year. He made one good point though -- injuries killed the d last year.

Stripes
To see this idea (Madieu to CB) arise at all with Chuck makes me think criticism of Madieu's tackling last year was well warranted. I don't think the move is necessary, and nor do I think it'll happen at all. Interesting to see it come up though.
jditty47
it had more to do with james and oneals inconsistencies than his inability to make the big tackle on RB's.
HairOnFire
that interview with chuck sucked worse than marvins interviews. it honestly was at the most pointless of points in a year to interview him. At the risk of standing too close to the much hated Bres...I agreed with almost everything he said. For example, I agree that injuries ruined most of what they attempted to do. A also agree that breakdowns in the secondary were as surprising as they are unacceptable and either need to be addressed in the draft...which is my preference...or by moving Madieu to CB. I also agreed that any talk about switching to a 3-4 scheme is premature until a final decision is made regarding Justin Smith, until the Bengals see what can be done in FA, and until they see what they can accomplish in the draft. Oh, and I laughed to myself and agreed completely when Bres stated that he felt the defense was closer than most believed. In fact, I've said the very same thing to friends of mine...although I had to admit it was more of a gut feeling than a combination of things that could be pointed to as cold hard facts. They had some horrible moments this year for sure, like the second half of the Chargers game or the Colts game. They won more than a few games for the Bengals this year regardless, and continued to improve statistically as they have every year under Marvin.12th in run defense? Folks can attribute that to whatever they may, but 12th is 12th. That's a huge improvement. Gimme some more pass rush, maybe a better corner, and suddenly they'll be in very good shape. Scottishbengal
breakdowns in the secondary were as surprising as they are unacceptable Certainly unacceptable but surprising? I don't think so. Secondary has been the soft belly for years .... YEARS!
GregCook
I do remember he as called a devout christian when he was drafted. I don't think he's Mormon, otherwise we'd have drafted him from BYU. Whatever his "off the field" issues, at least they aren't criminal!Chuck made it sound as if Caleb some having some off the field issues. Anyone have a clue what that's about? HairOnFire
Certainly unacceptable but surprising? I don't think so. Secondary has been the soft belly for years .... YEARS! Fair enough. I loudly predicted the dropoff in the play of Tory James and how well and early Jonathan Joseph would contribute. But let's just say that I was surprised by how poorly Deltha O'Neal played this season, and I was surprised that Madieu Williams didn't have more impact than he did...and I'm guessing that was true for the Bengal coaches as well. I think they had every reason to expect more than they got from both. In Madieu's example the statements made by Bengal coaches are consistently supportive so any changes being considered seem to be little more than putting a potentially explosive player in a position where he can have more immediate impact. In regards to Deltha, he was dinged up most of the season so a certain amount of slack might be expected. Instead, the statements being made by Bengal coaches can't be seen as anything but warning shots fired over the bow and unless they see and hear what they want I'd expect O'Neal to get real competiton for the starting job. And again, that's surprising to me since Deltha worked so hard to shed the bust tag and earn a Pro Bowl nod. Speaking only for myself I did NOT see it coming. Kazkal
Madieu got stiff armed alot last season but I'd still like to see bengals resign him asap ...when chuck was talking about 1 base defense i'm wondering if ours is prevent. HairOnFire
i love how people say they predicted something when all they did was go with something that had high odds. Well I guess it could be worse. I could have been one of the posters who argued that Tory James still had plenty of gas left in his Pro Bowl tank. Happily I'm not that guy because I'd feel pretty stupid right now. And just as happily I'm not one of the crowd that predicted that Joseph would be worked into the lineup slowly and would likely struggle for awhile. Instead, I said he'd play as early as week 1, would get substantial snaps, and would play well from the start. Of course, being correct about these things means very little, as Jditty points out so well. Instead, the only opinions that matter around here are those that are proven wrong and can be mocked later on by those who hadn't bothered to say anything. HoosierCat
Madieu to move to cornerback then who plays free saftey? Kewain, draftpick??CLEARLY it's Tab Perry. Please try and keep up... Exactly. Tight end, special teams ace, and defensive back extraordinaire! As for Madieu to corner...ehhh...no. He can do it in a pinch but if they want a CB that bad either spend some money in FA or pull the trigger at 18. Madieu at safety is working OK, let's not eff up the few things on D that are going right.

HoTbOy
I don't think the idea of MWilliams playing corner is a bad one...he would match up pretty good with the big physical receivers in the league...
Sportsdoc
Deltha could probably be moved to safety (see Sporting News Review of NFL cornerbacks, April 06...) His style is better playing zone v. man and those cover two style corners do better coming up to meet the receiver rather than moving with them.... of course he could get cut, too.... K2 is best a nickel or dime back...ALso, how is the world did WALT HARRIS get to go to the Pro Bowl as an alternate CB......... I think K2 has more int's.................
