Wraith
Didn't he get picked up by the Packers after Cincy cut him? After leaving Green Bay didn't the Buccaneers pick him up and send him to NFL Europe? Didn't he flop in NFL Europe? He did get a second chance, he did get a third chance, shoot you bomb out of three NFL Teams AND NFL Europe and it becomes difficult for any NFL GM or Head Coach to say "I can turn him around" and then you are shoot out of luck. If there is anyone complaining about second chances it should be Tim Couch.

Kazkal
Page 2 of 4"I just hope it's not a racial issue," Smith said. "Being a black quarterback and seeing some of the Caucasian quarterbacks constantly get opportunities over and over again. I know deep down in my heart, I'm better than some of those guys. I know it.""I didn't play well"Smith admits that he didn't live up to expectations during his days in Cincinnati. Thats retarded but I do feel bad for akili same with warrick and kijana, being sacked so many times probbley diden't help just like Carr which i'm glad the texans are keeping carr around and know its hard to do anything if you dont have a Oline

HairOnFire
I liked the part where Akili suggests that people within the Bengals organization are poisoning his chances by "getting the word out" about his miserable stay in Cincy. Sheesh, what does he expect? He got people fired. Wouldn't you expect a guy like Ken Anderson would have plenty of things to say about why Akili never progressed a bit as a QB? Why would Anderson or Coslet hold back when someone calls with questions about Smith?

Wraith
We passed up all of NEW ORLEANS' selections not CHICAGO'SAnd it gets worse than that from what I have heard we were offered the best deal out of anyone because Ditka was SURE that Indy would take Williams at #4 (they selected James instead). We were offered selection #12 in rd.1 all of New Orleans other 1999 selections (which did not include a 2nd rd. selection), first round selections in 2000 and 2001 AND Alex Molden CB (who at the time filled a tremendous need for us).Taking a look at first round selections ONLY heres what we passed up,Jevon Kearse (1999), LaVar Arrington (2000), and Deuce McAllister (2001) (2000 and 2001 selections reflecting the players who were actually selected at those positions, Kearse was selected at #14 instead of #12 which was New Orleans position). I was SCREAMING at the TV in Damon's for the 1360 Draft Party that the Bengals should have packaged all the Saints picks in 1999 to move up from #12 to #6 to select Champ Bailey which is exactly what Washington did when they took a lesser Saints deal (no #1 in 2001) at #5.Any competent GM whould have been able to work out that deal frankly it is unforgivable that the Browns and Eagles did not take the deal.Worst. Draft. in. History.Rd. 1: Akili SmithRd. 2: Charles FisherRd. 3: Cory HallRd. 4: Craig YeastRd. 5: Nick LucheyRd. 6: Kelly Gregg (which was a good selection that was wasted in Cincinnati)Rd. 7a: Tony CoatsRd. 7b: Scott CovingtonRd. 7c: Donald BroomfieldBLECH! They had a couple of successful NFL coaches (I can't remember who exactly, but well known) saying he was the best quarterback they saw that year. They said the Browns coveted him more than Couch, but with Couch's accomplishments they weren't gonna risk #1 on Smith. Funny how they both busted. In my opinion, Akili would have been an ok quarterback if he was put a decent NFL situation. For what its worth, Akili's ball was really pretty tight spiral...too bad it ended up in the other team's hands more often than not.
MacD BengalFan
It is to bad that he does not get the message that he is not good enough to play, even in the Arena League. BigBenBlows
I just can't believe that he REALLY thinks he could still play in the NFL. He had an amazing year at OU which never materialized in the pros. David Carr should be taking notes.
ArmyBengal
They had a couple of successful NFL coaches (I can't remember who exactly, but well known) saying he was the best quarterback they saw that year.Wasn't the same thing said about Ryan Leaf the year he came out ?? If not, no big deal because the same can be said about many different players in many different positions that never amounted to sh*t. Akili had every chance to show he could cut it and failed miserably. Yes, the Bengals sucked miserably as well, but he didn't do anything to show he could handle ANY aspect of the game. "F" him !!! Not to mention we were paying him up until last year anyway, so really "F" him !!!WHODEY !!!
bengalboomer7
I can't say much, I was really hoping to get Cade McNown(UCLA) that year and he lasted about five minutes longer than Akili
HairOnFire
I spent that draft pimping Champ Bailey hard, and Daunte Culpepper if the Bengals simply had to have a QB with Couch and McNabb off the board. In hindsight I feel pretty good about that....even if both players have been less than advertised...and are no longer with the teams that drafted them. But truth be told I had seen Akili Smith play in two games and I thought he had the potential to be a solid NFL QB. Thus, I wasn't very upset when he was selected. But here's the rub. After being drafted I really can't think of a single thing that Akili Smith got better at. Zero progress.
