Krenzel Booted

per Hobson...

It wasn’t a good day to be an Ohio State alum as veteran quarterback Craig Krenzel and rookie tight end Ryan Hamby were released. Signed off this past weekend’s camp were rookie free agents DeMarcus Rideaux, a 6-0, 197-pound cornerback from Mayville State, and Glenn Holt, a 6-1, 188-pound wide receiver from Kentucky.

With quarterback Carson Palmer still rehabbing, Lewis said the remaining quarterbacks are going to rotate with Doug Johnson starting off things. The Krenzel release means the club plans to give the bulk of the work to Johnson and Anthony Wright, with Palmer apparently still on target to return for the July 29 start of training camp, or close to it.

Before the Krenzel cut, Lewis said the Bengals would take four quarterbacks to camp and they now have four counting Palmer and free agent Erik Meyer of Eastern Washington after he took every snap of the rookie camp. They could also still sign another quarterback if one surfaced.

No big surprise. The way they went about collecting QBs earlier didn't bode well for Craig.

At least we won't have to listen to people tell us how Krenzal should start until Palmer can come back...lol. Krenzal sucks and has just came to the end of his career. Another great buckeye career.

Wasnt exactly given his fair shot... Had to sub in his rookie season (baptism by fire) and did just about as well as "all world" Orton and then was signed by the Bengals to backup Kitna.

Be interesting to see how 2-4 shakes out. Right now I guess its

2) Wright

3) Johnson

4) Meyer (PS or #3???)

Side note: Sounds like McNeal will be full time WR.

Meyer won't get through waivers to PS. He's 3. They'll keep Johnson and Wright to see who performs and make sure everyone gets out of camp healthy before the final cut.

I sort of feel sorry for Craig, but look at it this way...by being released this early, he can always get picked up by another team and get a shot at competing for a QB job and possibly seeing some actual playing time.

Okay. Probably not with most teams, and probably not competing against most other NFL QB's, BUT!!!...

...as long as THIS guy is still taking the starting snaps from center in Baltimore, hope will burn eternal for all young unsigned QB's!:yes:

"Hi. I'm Kyle Boller. I schtupped Tara Reid! Oh...and I suck at football. Howya' doin?"

I will go out on a limb and say I was hoping he would stay and Johnson would hit the road, but they must of thought pretty poorly of Krentzel. He had a year to hold the clipboard and learn behind Carson, but obviously the skills just weren't there. Here's to hoping Wright is the #2 because I believe he brings the run game to the table and I still don't like Johnson.

Was Bramlett really THAT bad ??

WHODEY !!!

I think we should go.

1Palmer.

2 Wright

3 doug Johnson,

4. Mcneal..

then when palmer is back 100%.

1 palmer.

2 wright.

3 mcneal/wr

save a roster spot and cut johnson.

i don't know. But I'm glad you put the "then when Carson is 100%" But that scares me. Of course, if we ever get down to the third QB I'll be scared anyways.

Johnson gets first crack because he has been here longer, more time to absorb the play book. If Wright is better he will win the job, Don't count Johnson out.

I like Meyer as a long term solution, I think the Bengals will give him every chance to be #3

Since Marvin's middle name is "misdirection", why is everybody convinced that Carson won't end up on PUP ? I predict he misses the first 6 weeks (5 games), of which we should win 2 even with Gimpy the three-legged dog as QB. My QB's in the 1st 6 weeks:

1) A Wright - "Just don't lose it for us". Takes the co-pilot chair when CP returns.

2) B Johnson - Destined for the waiver wire when Carson returns.

3) E Meyer - Mr. "Inactive" for the year, but should progress to be signed longterm as the Number Two - "Avis - He who tries harder"

They seem to have a pretty good range of "skills"* with Johnson and Wright. Wright can run & gun some. Johnson is a (very) poor man's Bledsoe who can stand in the pocket. I have to believe they figured Johnson had picked up the playbook well enough that he & Krenzel were, at worst, interchangeable and since Johnson has a better arm .... bye, bye Craig. Although I hesitate to give too much credit or respect to Johnson, it sounds like the right way to go at this point. Wright was picked up, and kept (so far), because he adds a dimension with his mobility that we didn't have at that point. All in all, I'm cool with where we're at. It will be interesting to see who does what in pre-season between Wright and Johnson - I really believe it's completely open right now.

* (I know, I know, we're still talking about backups here -- so don't think I'm overstating the level of quality we can expect.)

I don't think there's any doubt that the competition between Wright and Johnson is and will be wide open through the offseason and preseason. That's how Marvin has always conducted his business... The player who performs the best in training camp gets the job, regardless of his performances in past seasons (see Langston Moore).

When the race is over, I think it'll be Wright at the helm.

Sure makes for a lot more intersting Pre-season games when you have 2 guys battling for a #2 spot and some possible early season starts. Then throw a top-flight undrafted free-agent pick-up playing for his pro-career to continue...WoW! Imagine having these guys throwing balls to the young speedsters we hae duking it out to make the team too...

The Bengal's should average 30+ a game in the Pre-season!

:sure:

Glenn Holt, a 6-1, 188-pound wide receiver from Kentucky.

Are you serious? Surely someone better was available.

Don't count Johnson out.

Have you ever seen him play!?! We'll if you have, you'd know how really difficult it is to count him in for crissakes! IMHO Anthony Wright is a far better QB than "Dead Arm Dougie" will ever be!

Interesting comment in light of the fact that the opening day QB has been set before camp for the 3 years that Marvin has been the coach. Perhaps, you're referring more to how he has handled backups and, if so, I agree with you. However, I happen to think that this is a true QB derby for the starter job for all of 1 month. It's somewhat less than compelling in the sense that there is no real ? (couldn't resist spain) who our "real" starting QB is. Sorry to quibble, we're probably saying more the same thing than anything different, but technically, there has not been any QB competition during the Marvin era -- even though many disputed the virtue of that approach at the time. I remember Michael Ervin (my favorite bobblehead jackass) saying that Marvin was crazy for benching the comeback player of the year the next season. As usual -- quality take by ESPN's resident cokehead.

I was referring to the entire roster, but you're right, with Carson it was a different story. He is far an away a better option than anyone else at the position we've had here since he was drafted, so during the Marvin era I'm not sure QB competition has been overly necessary. With Kitna, I think Marvin knew he had seen the best he would ever see, and knew Carson had to get in there soon and show what he can do... That was a different and rare circumstance as compared to what we could see this year between Wright and Johnson.

McNeal will not be a backup QB because they either have to develop him and train him as a WR OR a QB - not both. You can't expect some rookie to come in and learn TWO positions, let alone 2 playbooks and a new position to boot. Cmon now.

McNeal might be given 3-4 plays total to learn as a QB at some point, but that'll be the extent of it. He's a WR.

Agreed. Reggie McNeal will NEVER be listed as a QB for the Bengals. Unless #1 and #2 went down in a single game. But even then, I would expect the team to bring in a free agent the following Monday. So put him down as #5 QB. Just like Brad St. Louis is the #4 TE.

Wright is #2 this year. Doug Johnson gets cut at the end of pre-season.

Meyer seems promising. From what the beat writers are saying, it sounds like he's got a great arm and is fairly mobile. They obviously saw more from him this weekend than Krenzel offered the past 12 months.

It's very, very, very early but he seems like this year's candidate to be the "eventual, long-term #2 QB". I'd say his progress determines Wright's future with the team (beyond '06-'07).
