More signs pointing to no day 1 TE?

Recommended Posts

KFFL.com is reporting that the Bengals will have E.J. Underwood (CB Ohio State) and Ryan Hamby (TE Ohio) in for visits tommorow.

Hamby is projected as a day 2 pick or FA. His strengths are his blocking, catching and route running. His weaknesses are his speed and strength. Read his scouting report here.

The reason that this is semi-significant is that teams are only allowed to bring in a maximum of 30 draft eligible players before the draft. I haven't seen any visits by Davis, Pope, Lewis, Fasano or Klopfenstein yet so this gives me the impression that TE may not be as high a priority as everyone thinks it is.

Actually they see all of the 1st day prospects so much, that I would imagine they often use this option to see the mid-round players, they they don't get to see up-close otherwise. Plus they don't want to tip their hands on 1st round guys, but that is pure conjecture.

But yes I honestly think a center like Mangold or a DT/DE or CB is much more likely in the 1st round.

I might consider Hamby an upgrade to Schobel over-all.

I don't remember if Marvin brought in last years 1st pick David Pollack or not last season for a pre-draft workout. Does anyone recall?

Did Pollack or Odell visit cinci? before draft last year I really heard nothing that suggest we'd take them

You can't read into anything at this point in the year. All team are doing is smoke screening, and any article published is doing so with information given to them by the smoke screening coaches and GM's. If I wasn't just so thirsty for the draft to get here, I'd be smart enough to ignore every report that is released. So... does Hamby's visit mean anything or nothing? The answer is a big fat "No one knows until draft day."

Hamby probably won't even be drafted and EJ Underwood DEFINITELY will not be drafted. They're probably looking at those two as undrafted free agents.

Besides, if you're an Ohio State fan, you know that Ryan Hamby is the devil. :)

KilBurn, your facts are a little off. They can interview 30 people at the combine. There's no limit after the combine.

This is how I rank the tight ends the Bengals could take in the first three rounds:

Pope

Lewis

Fasano

Klopfenstein

Thomas

Byrd

And I really don't like Byrd.

I had just finished chastising a guy on another forum for saying he wanted the Bengals to take Lewis in the first round. I guess I had a mental block or something.

Again, I agree 100% with you. I'd rather see Whitner/Williams/Cromartie/Hali/Kiwanuka in the first and a TE in the second. I mean, I like Pope, but I like Lewis, Fasano, & Klopfenstein just as much.

Lewis

Klopfenstein

Pope

Thomas

Fasano

Byrd.

Just my opinion...No neccessarily a knock on Pope but I have Klopfenstein rated higher than I had Miller last year, I think any of the top 7 (Davis is of course rated higher than everyone) would be a substantial improvement over what we had last year.

Klop has great hands, catches the ball away from his body, has the speed to get deep and the toughness to go over the middle, I also think he is a better blocker than everyone gives him credit.

I like Pope but I think you have to spend #24 on him and I just don't see the amazing difference between him and the other guys normally rated behind him, I haven't seen a single play on tape where he left his feet to catch a ball and very few where he broke a long run after the catch.

Both Klopfenstein and Thomas are better after the catch IMHO but then again I had Leftwich rated higher than Palmer and wanted the Bengals to select Terrance Newman so what the hell do I know :).

The long and the short of it is ANY of the top 7 TEs would be fantastic I just don't want to see any of them (with the exception of Davis) taken in the first round.

My preference would be

DE

TE

CB

It was decided at this years NFL owners meetings, which took place March 26-30, that teams are now allowed to have 30 players in for pre-draft visits. Previously that number was 20.

The combine was already held 1 month prior to this meeting even taking place.

Feel free to correct me, again, if my facts are still off.

I found this little bit over at PFT. I suppose the Ohio State players could be considered "local".

CLARIFYING THE PRE-DRAFT VISITS RULE

We've gotten questions as to how the Redskins could bring in more than 50 draft prospects with local ties, given that the limit for pre-draft visits is 30.

Here's how the 'Skins were permitted to do it.

Under NFL rules, the limit is 30. For players with local ties (either through high school or college), there's no limit.

We posted this item because we've learned that there is some confusion about the rule, both among the media and among some of the teams.
