Whur CHad At? Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 Bengals re-sign Wilkins By GEOFF HOBSONMarch 23, 2006Posted: 4:45 p.m. Wilkins The Bengals secured one of their special teams aces Thursday when linebacker Marcus Wilkins agreed to a one-year deal, according to agent Mark Mersel. The Bengals don’t confirm contracts until they are signed. It’s the second time in a week Mersel has done a deal with the Bengals. He’s the agent for wide receiver/punt returner Antonio Chatman, the former Packer that just signed a two-year contract. Wilkins, a fifth-year backup linebacker heading into his third season with the Bengals, is one of Chatman’s primary blockers, and one of the special teams leaders since he arrived off waivers from Green Bay just before the 2004 season. He tied departed wide receiver Kevin Walter with 17 tackles on teams this past year, one behind leader Anthony Mitchell. Wilkins, 26, is believed to have received a $40,000 bonus to go with a $585,000 minimum salary. Quote
KiLBurn Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 Good Move. Excellent special teams player. Quote

ArmyBengal Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 Good to hold onto someone on ST since Walter left !!!WHODEY !!! Quote
AMC Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 Indeed a good resigning. Even better after the loss of Walter. Would like to see him get more opps on D, but LBer is pretty stocked up.... Quote
schweinhart Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 Still a chunk for only a teams player, not to mention the price of a roster spot taken by a 1 dimensional player if it comes down to, say, carrying 4 true DTs instead of 5. But Wilkins does headhunt and block well. Quote

Stripes Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 Good move indeed. Wilkins looked like he'd be gone for sure, but after losing Myles and Walter I suppose he became more valuable. Quote
NJ29 Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 Is there any outside chance that Reg could come back? Quote

BengalszoneBilly Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 the Bengals don't even have 1 true DT at this point. So sad, yet so true! Why, oh why does this remain a constant with Marvin? Year, after year, after year? For an alleged defensive guru kinda guy, he sure doesn't mind his team getting their collective asses run over! Quote

We were what 28th against the run this year and I forget what we were last year, but I think that Marvin thinks that our DT's are unstopable. He doesn't feel a need for an upgrade. Quote

That's full blown delusional! Even as high as Spain usually is, he's not that high! Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted March 24, 2006 Author Report Posted March 24, 2006 Marvin must have some of that good stuff Quote
wookie Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 Wow, this thread is slowly moving towards the focus of a few of the other threads. DTBack to the original point, glad to have Wilkins back, at least for 1 more year...and even though we lost Walter we gained Chapman so we did ok. Quote

DTBack to the original point, glad to have Wilkins back, at least for 1 more year...and even though we lost Walter we gained Chapman so we did ok.Is it okay for the defense to get their asses run over AGAIN next season? I think not. Wilkins, Chapman...big whoop. The point is...NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO STOP THE RUN! ZERO! NADA! J***S F**KING C***T PEOPLE! THIS IS NOT OKAY! Especially going into a tough a season as the next one will undoubtedly be! There. I've calmed down. It's just I seem to be in the vast minority about fans being tired of the Bengals getting constantly run over and taking it up the ass. Un-f**king-believable. Quote

Un-f**king-believable. Not at allI want run defense as well...badly....in fact, if you scroll back to posts following the first few games of last season, when people were crowing we only gave up 90 yards, I quickly pointed out (and was subsequently jeered and laughed at) that the yards per attempt were like 6 and a half, and this wouldn't work for us, we'd get beaten in the first game of the playoffs. and we were. That said, yes, I want run defense. But I also want good special teams play, a reasonably good backup qb in case Carson isn't as ready as he thinks he will be when the games start for real, and so on. I can and will be happy when those signings occur, because they do make the team better.I haven't forgotten about the need for run defense, but I can (and will) be briefly happy when the team makes a move I view as positive. The Wilkins re-signing is just such a move. Quote
HoosierCat Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 Speaking of DTs, Lional Dalton re-upped with the Chiefs, so that's one less "pretty girl at the bus stop" for us. (No loss, IMHO). Quote
HoTbOy Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 The Wilkins signing is good and BB you are not alone in the thinking about stopping the run, it won't matter if Carson is ready to start the season, if they keep with the same DT's they will not be able to stop anyone anyway...but at least they won't(I hope) be running many kicks back if we can retain our core of good ST players...
