ArmyBengal Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 I think Kevin Jones is more than adequate as a RB in detroit, but their o-line is a little suspect. No I can't see McCown there either...WHODEY !!! Quote
The_Next_Big_Thing Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 No Running back in Detroit? Kevin Jones is a stud. The problem isn't the running back or receivers, it's the darned line not making holes.Roy Williams, Charlie Rogers, Mike Williams, and Scottie Vines are tremendous receivers. But Harrington and Gaycia couldn't get them the ball. Wonder why? Quote
Spain Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Samething Mcown had in ARizona, no O line. Quote

BTG Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Roy Williams, Charlie Rogers, Mike Williams, and Scottie Vines are tremendous receivers. But Harrington and Gaycia couldn't get them the ball. Wonder why?TREMENDOUS RECEIVERS!?Are you kidding me? Have you ever even seen the Lions play? I mean, to call Scottie Vines a wide receiver is like calling Paul Walker an Hollywood actor. Technically it's true, but just barely.Calling the rest of The Three "tremendous" is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever read. They are only slightly above average, and if you want to use the word "tremendous," you should follow it up with "underachievers." Charles Rogers is an injury-prone disaster with a bad attitude. Mike Williams runs some of the worst routes in all of football and has more mental lapses than a stoned high schooler trying to take a science test. Roy Williams is so inconsistent it's at the point where you know he's going to lose focus and drop a pass or two a game. Sure, he makes highlight reel catches, but so does Brandon Lloyd. To hell with flash, give me consistency any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Also, I noticed yesterday you grouped Bryant Johnson in with Boldin & Larry Fitzgerald, but Johnson is their slot receiver and has yet to do anything notable. Here's a tip: Just because a receiver was drafted in the first round doesn't make him "terrific," "tremendous," or any other positive adjective you can think of. Quote
The_Next_Big_Thing Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 BTG, all these guys are darned good receivers. They just need someone to throw them the ball and an oline to protect their QB while he does it.But then again, you were probably one of the guys who said TJ should be cut while I was saying he rocked. TJ catches everything. The Detroit Three do not.2. Harrington isn't perfect, but he gets the ball there. It's the receiver's job to catch it....which they don't do.I suppose David Terrell is tremendous as well and he just never had a QB who could get him the ball, right? There's obviously no arguing with you on this, since you mentioned how "you were right about TJ being worth keeping." WOW. I'm impressed. Any other predictions for us, Nostradamus? Anyway, just watch some Lions games and look at how piss-poor the receiver play is. Again, a first round pick does not = good receiver. Matt Millen is without a clue. Once again he overpays for a qb to compete for Harrington's job. It kind of reminds me of the Brees situation. SD drafted Rivera and then figured out that Brees was a very good qb (prior to his injury). Some qbs take longer to develop than others. Quote
HoosierCat Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 From a money standpoint, I'm still penciling in Martin or Redman.God I almost puked saying that... ]WHODEY !!!Also now available: Gus Frerotte. Quote

I actually don't think he'd be too bad an option... In the same mold as a Jay Fiedler... Still would rather have Martin though. Quote
bengalindian Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 OK, so I forgot about Kevin Jones, who would be a stud for any other team. But those Charles Rogers can't stay healthy, Mike Williams is too young to be called "tremendous" and Roy Williams is inconsistent. And again, it's the LIONS. I mean, who wants to play for Matt Millen?? Quote

TecmoFever Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 I think that Matt Millen has the same approach to QBs as the Cincinnati Reds do to starting pitching. Quantity, not quality. How many average QBs can you get on one team? And how much money would the Lions have wrapped up in the QB position?McCown to Cincy. Rocky IV, here we come. Quote

How many average QBs can you get on one team? And how much money would the Lions have wrapped up in the QB position? A whole lot. Add that to the huge money they're paying for their receivers and running back, and what do you get? A crappy offensive line and a bad defense. Quote
HoTbOy Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 I gotta agree with BTG the Lions WR's are not that good why would he pick them over us, unless they told him he could compete with Kitna... Quote

Whur CHad At? Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 McCown wants a lot of money...I don't blame himSHouldn't waste his time here Quote
TJJackson Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 McCown wants a lot of money...I don't blame himSHouldn't waste his time hereNot so sure about that....if his agents truly felt there wasn't a reason for him to come, he wouldn't have.Something tells me one of their strategies (if unable to sign for truly BIG money this year) runs something like this1) Find a club with all the offensive pieces in place except a QB - like, uh, i don't know - the Bengals (at least early in the season)2) sign an incentive laden 1year contract3) play at the level you know you can behind a great OL and with top notch weapons4) sign elsewhere for Drew Brees money in 2007Thats why he is coming here, imho Quote
Stripes Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Exactly, TJJ. If I were McCown, I would be salivating at the chance to show the NFL what I can do with the Bengals. We have absolutely everything he could need to succeed, and he has to see that... He will want big money, but if he's smart, he'll see a chance at BIG money later on!I was expecting Martin to be signed today, but since he wasn't... I think teh McCown plan has a really good chance at coming to fruition. Quote
Spain Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Couldnt agree more, I would be all over that no one looking over your shoulder, he could relax and play. the guy could be the highest paid FA next year. Quote
ArmyBengal Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Just doesn't seem like the Bengals line of thought to have a guy come in for one year. This is not to say it "Won't" be their line of thought, but throwing money at someone for a short time fix, hardly seems the way to go. I get what's being said and agree ot would be great for McCown, but where do the Bengals fit in that great opportunity for him ?? I think they will go with the less = more mentality. If I think that, I won't be dissapointed when it happens...WHODEY !!! Quote
TJJackson Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 I understand your line of thinking re: the Bengals don't generally want a guy for a year....but here's why it works in this particular case1) You don't want a highly paid backup at QB, except this year, when Carson Palmer may be sidelined for a significant part of the season.2) after 2006, you expect Carson to be hale and whole and you don't need that highly paid backup anymore3) after 2006, Crenzel and whoever else is on the roster at QB have another year's experience in our system, and are thereby more ready to step in as the 2 when and if need beMcCown could potentially make Brees-like money in 2007 if he was great for a year here.
