2023 Draft Talking Points
ShulaSteakhouse replied to TJJackson's topic in College Football/NFL Draft
King's 1st round mock seems pretty solid for the most part, but if the Bengals' take Musgrave at 28 I'll have a f'ing fit, at least if Murphy, Gibbs and Torrance are there. Surely a worthwhile TE will be there in 2 or 3, that isn't a big drop-off from a largely unknown prospect in Musgrave. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/nfl-mock-draft-2023-peter-202534738.html -

If Robinson or Gibbs is there at #28, I don't have a big issue with taking one of them, if it means Mixon is phased-out for what should be a more productive/rounded RB. That said if one of top 2 or 3 OT's is there, or one of the top 2 OG's, I'd prefer that. I'm least excited about a CB that sits for a year at 28. -

I'm hoping LaPorta drops into the 2nd or 3rd. Or even Washington. Or Kuntz in 4th/5th. Whyle would fine too in the 5th/6th. Feels like Banks may be the best player there. Not sure if I like him or Forbes more. ---- I read where Levis is telling people the Panthers are telling him he's the 1st over-all pick, which is kind of nuts IMO. What a gamble that is. Young would be my #1 as long as he's going to a team that has a competent enough o-line that doesn't get him killed. I watched enough of Stroud to know he's not much of a leader, has a quiet personality, is generally soft, and lacks the psychological make-up to be a take-charge NFL QB at this point. His arm talent is too good though, so would put him over Levis any day. Stroud could be a great one if he has the drive for it, I just don't see it though I guess. -
At least one more year of the sports media literally crawling-up Rodgers' rear end every day, now that he's in NY, and with Brady retired. Cowboys and Jets' every week on national games, woo.
-
He wasn't very good last year, I wonder how good he'll be coming back from that kind of injury? Ideally they move on from him and Jonah this season and draft a better RT, they can probably find an upgrade in the draft, in the first 2 rounds, at least an upgrade to Collins, Ford or Carman. I'd feel much better with a high upside rookie than what they currently have to rely on. Wouldn't mind a LG upgrade also, either via someone moving there, or signing/drafting someone.
-
Did not know that about Jonah refusing to move at Alabama. Not a good look, did the Bengals' not already know that about him, before drafting him? (asking him to move to RT and expecting him to do it here) If his attitude is going to suck anywhere but LT, then I don't know how you keep him around. Collins' isn't someone you can rely on right now. Ford neither. Wonder if Collins' and Williams' both get ruffled if they draft an OT in the first 2 rounds. Better draft someone pretty good.

Mayer may be the only TE I'd consider at 28. The OT's and DT's left all will have bigger question marks than say, the CB's that may fall to them (i.e. Banks and Forbes). That includes Darnell Wright, Mauch's level of competition, and Anton Harrison not really being what they need at RT (finesse LT). Broderick Jones might be the only OT to consider there if he falls that far, fits Pollack's type, as does Mauch. Have a feeling Kancey's going to fall into the 2nd (at least) due to his size concerns and short arms. I don't think Myles Murphy will be there, but I'm sure he's in-play. There should be a few solid starting CB's in the 2nd as well, in addition to TE's, just like they got CTB last year. Maybe they trade-down in the 1st. Maybe they just go BPA sans QB and WR at 28, and end-up with someone like Gibbs if he falls that far. With the Mixon situation and Perine gone, more and more I'm thinking RB is a priority., but Robinson and Gibbs are the only 2 worth a 1st round pick I think. Late 1st round picks I guess are always hard to narrow-down. -

I just don't know how many years you can keep drafting DB's in round 1/2, gotta spread the top level draft talent around. I can see them drafting a couple in later rounds (3+), but who knows. -

UPDATE: Tiffin University defensive back Tyler Richardson has met with the Houston #Texans, Washington #Commanders and the Dallas #Cowboys at his Pro Day, source says. Richardson was invited to the Cincinnati #Bengals Local Day on Tuesday, per league sources. https://twitter.com/_MLFootball/status/1647761442420977665 -

God knows how they find these players. https://twitter.com/_MLFootball/status/1647669089672757255?s=20 "UPDATE: Slippery Rock defensive back Kevin Hyde has been invited to the Cincinnati #Bengals Local Pro Day on the 18th, source says. @kevinhyde__ is a two-time All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference honoree while playing at Tiffin University. Hyde has drawn interest from multiple teams during the pre-draft process, per league sources" Darnell Washington seems like a good 3rd round pick/gamble, not so much a day one guy IMO. Everyone is WRONG about Darnell Washington https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-ocL9u9H74&t=183s -
This is why I don't want to spend a top pick on Kincaid at this point. I assume they're focusing on the blocker/short yardage TE role in the draft (vs another field stretcher like Smith Jr.), a potential upgrade to Sample's receiving and blocking skills.
-
Yeah, I saw someone on Twitter report the Bengals' TE coach told ODU's Kuntz (I believe) that he shouldn't be discouraged if they draft a TE earlier....implying they may draft 2 TE's. Orlando performs best when he has help with a secondary blocker (RB, TE), at least KC did that a lot with him. So maybe they are focusing on blockers, dunno. Someone's not going to make it though, can't keep 'em all.

Don't disagree, although he has a ton of experience in college obviously (was a fan of his coming out of HS as the #1 player and watched most of the UCLA games). I can't get into Forbes at #28. Wright won't make it to 28. I do not like Kincaid in the 1st (health/longevity/blocking concerns), would be an ideal 2nd or 3rd round TE IMO, but this team needs a blocker. I have to think they're just going to go with the BPA at a position of need (i.e. not QB or WR) in the 1st. Even Torrence for the LG need is a possibility I guess, but am guessing they're still leaning on Volson and have that position reduced on the board. I have to admit I want offense in the first 2 rounds, despite all the DB losses. TE, OT, OG, RB, all serious needs now and in the future. But I am guessing replacing soon-to-be-departed DEF players may be more of a priority based on the Bengals' recent past drafts. I hate drafting 1st round guys at any spot who are meant to replace a future FA, just for that reason, like Hill. Stop being so married to some of these mediocre players, draft their replacements, i.e. the o-line. Find the guy who will make the most impact, period, just that, not cap management B.S.. -

Agree. He would likely prefer a flimsier starting QB situation though, I'm guessing. -

Bengals' looking at Tavis Robinson: https://twitter.com/JustinM_NFL/status/1644786096880902144?s=20 Lutz reporting other DE's: https://twitter.com/willie_lutz/status/1643671471460425734 Seems like mostly mid/late round types? -

If Washington or Jones (Dawan) fell, at this point, I'd be good with either I think. CB at #28 makes me nervous, relying on that much inexperience among all the DB's if drafting a projected starter. But I know what else they're going to do, need one in top 3 rounds regardless. -
Goodberry's mock. No OT's. Possibly stuck with Jonah/Collins.
-
Depending on Jonah, at least right now, seems pretty risky.

The pagination links to the thread pages, for me, are unsecure (http) so don't work in my browser, haven't for some time (fyi if it helps any Admins). So I can't see any previous pages in threads, just the latest page (for some time now -ugh). Sorry for distraction. I forgot the Bengals' are on the hook, I think, for like $7.5m of his salary. If true, I can't see them eating that. Not sure if a conviction nullifies his contract, but threatening someone with a gun in public is probably not a good look if you're a star player who's already punched a girl in the face in public.
-
I get it but I can't imagine he has any need to be waving a gun around in public as a player, no other player has ever had to do this before, so why is he different? Why is his sister living in his home doing the same? History of violent behavior in public so I'm not surprised. I have no excuses for him, seems to be a bit of a hot-head and thinks way too highly of himself.
-
Mixon is being "re-charged" with Aggravated Menacing according to Cincinnati Police. I am no longer a fan of his, not that I ever was really, but after the punching incident in college and now this, plus his overpaid, ridiculous $12m salary - just cut him and draft/sign someone and use the cap space to fill a need. Wish they would've just kept Perine and gotten rid of him. But count me out as a fan - nothing but a drag for this offense, they can find someone better pretty easily, so do it and move on from this clown.

Would be fine in the 2nd round with me, if he's there. I agree with Prisco that he is under-valued by draft nerds, but with his ceiling and after signing Smith, probably not at 28. -

Bengals' spending a lot of time with CB's and RB's. With Smith, can probably wait on TE. -
Basham looks like he could replace either Gunther or Sample after watching his NFL tape. Can contribute on ST's (FG blocks) and seems to be quicker/faster than Sample, while still being able to defend the run. Makes more plays than Sample (who came on a bit last season but I don't know that he can do much more than he has). They like Sample as depth, and I'm not impressed at all with Gunther, so maybe he has an impact, and they still draft someone, dunno. But it's possible Basham lowers the draft priority more than I thought. Maybe they just go with those 6 guys. Irv Smith is a slight downgrade to Hurst IMO, which is fine for now, but I think TE is a first 3 round pick still. No way you pass-up this draft's TE's early when you desperately need one. Looking more and more like OT at #28, or maybe CB or DT, but this isn't the draft thread, just thoughts on how the FA's might affect the draft.
-
I don't expect them to ever be in the top 5 or 10, but the top 15 should be the goal still. I also realize how a "play disrupter" like Hubbard works well for him. I guess that is why they moved Ossai inside and limited Dunlap until he was unhappy and left. So it's a good point - Lou seems to rely heavily on one premier pass rusher for sacks and prefers a 3-down, complete player on the other side who plays well against the run and can disrupt behind the LOS. I think they need to find someone to replace Hendrickson next season, who can rotate, and who can pick-up his production if hurt. I just don't see a post-third round talent in this draft being that guy. Maybe I'm wrong, dunno, but they need another premiere talent like Hendrickson (also because he gets hurt a lot), and I'm not sure if you wait until next season to get him. I'd also like to see someone rotate more often with Hendrickson to keep his legs fresh and lessen odds of injury etc.,., I'm just thinking at this point, they need to find "that" guy in the 1st or 2nd round. I don't think they can afford an impact FA there at this point, or any time soon with the extensions looming.
