Marshall comes home

August 23, 2007

10:50 p.m.

It took about a decade, but Lemar Marshall has come home to play football.

Marshall, a St. Xavier High School grad cut by the Redskins earlier this week, signed a one-year deal with the Bengals Thursday.

The 6-2, 225-pound Marshall, 30, can play all three linebacker spots, but he started the last two seasons in the middle for the Redskins and piled up 198 solo tackles, 3.5 sacks and four interceptions.

I think this is fabulous news! Here's a starting MLB with experience and stats to back it up. At a minimum he's great depth, at best could we be looking at Jeanty, Marshall and Hartwell as the starting LBs?

From the Redskins website:

Head coach Joe Gibbs said on Tuesday that coaches were impressed with some of its young linebackers. So they opted to release Marshall now so that he could have enough time to land a job with another team.

"We had some other guys who we felt like we were coming through for us," Gibbs said. :Lemar has done a lot for us. We kind of made up our mind that we would go in a different direction, and now he has a chance to play with [another team].

Gibbs added: "Lemar is a high-quality guy and he has meant a lot to us."

Marshall is among the success stories for the Redskins' personnel department this decade.

He signed with the Redskins as a free agent in 2001, after spending time with Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Denver early in his NFL career.

After two seasons playing mostly on special teams, Marshall got his chance as a starting linebacker with the Redskins in 2004. Replacing an injured LaVar Arrington at weak-side linebacker, Marshall started 14 games and logged 82 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

In 2005, Marshall moved to middle linebacker and had his best season, recording 132 tackles (103 solo), two sacks and a team-high four interceptions.

Maybe, but I think it has more to do with Henderson getting knocked out and the overall lack of depth at LB.

It's about as quality a signing as you can expect at this point in the year.

As a St. X grad I'm ecstatic! LeMar can play all 3 LB positions and adds depth and experience to the LB corp. He can be an insurance policy for Ahmad or Jeanty (move Landon to SLB and LeMar to WLB). I love this pickup.

Marshall or Trotter--- figured they would make a move for one of the two...

And I'm not surprised that we chose the cheaper, less impactful player. Of course, I'm OK with that--since either would be provide limited (meaning limited amount of years) insurance/depth, and I don't like overpaying for, as the title suggests, "old washed-up dudes".

FWIW here's the reaction to the Skins cutting Lamar from the f2fa Redskins board...

In short, they were surprised, thought he was a valuable, versatile backup (shades of Landon Johnson!) and were sorry to see him go. Consensus appears to be that his natural position is WLB.

Yeah I would hope Hartwell can stay inside and do a good job while Marshall moves outside, and Landon can fill-in as needed at any position. I wouldn't hand the job to Jeanty either - that guy should be used more on 3rd downs and as a pass rushing specialist IMO.

Only for the sake that he now plays for us do I wish this guy the same success that enjoyed while being coached by Marvin Lewis all those years ago in D.C.

- But reality is, we took the " Old Washed Up (Cheap) Dude " !!

This is an Anti-Brown move, plain and simple.:angry::angry::angry:

I really need to check my lottery ticket, and see if I won, cause I will personally pay for Dominic Williams and Jeremiah Trotters' 1 year deals this season !!

Chris Perry Healthy ^_^

Lemar Marshall over Jeremiah Trotter

But Who Dey Mother F***ers !!

Good work on getting the link to the Redskins message board. I liked what I read--most Skins fans didn't like the move, so that's a good sign. I'm still hoping that Brooks somehow looks good on Monday night, but this is a good move for if/when he doesn't.

I'm a little saddened that the defense is at a point right now where a player that would be a backup on another team can make us excited that he may start here. At least that's what I think I'm saying.

At least TJ Housh... could be a number 1 on a lot of other teams so I guess it balances out.

He is a definite upgrade over Caleb Miller and I feel a lot better about the talent level in LB now. The spinzone says that he will play behind Jeanty and I don`t understand it. He is built like a WB and was pushed into playing MB for the Skins so why put him behind Jeanty? Isn`t Frazier or Earl Everett a better fit there?
