walzav29 Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 While I was sitting grinning about going to the playoffs, a Lions fan reminded me of the Lions from 90 to 1996. They went to the playoffs 5 times, and had 1 playoff victory. I'm still happy about not being the scrubbiest team in the NFL, it won't mean anything until Marv is hoisting the Lombardi! Quote

If that doesn't help, look at it this way: it will be a while before we even have to worry about matching the Steelers' record of futility, something like 9 seasons under Cowher in which they've made the playoffs, yet only made it to the big game once...and lost that. The_Next_Big_Thing Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 Hey, I wouldn't mind being the Bills style multiple playoff and Super Bowl appearances without a win. It's not like we'd be losing to the AFC North! Quote
ShulaSteakhouse Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 Pitt is 8-9 in playoff games under Cowher - I attribute a lot of that to lack of offense and/or a consistent, solid franchise type QB - which they now have - and ran into a buzzsaw last year as the Colts/Patriots are always in the way. The Steelers tended to get in all those years because the division has been soooo weak for so long with the exception of the Ravens and Titans for a couple of years.Palmer's too good to be a choker, but he's young and counting on him to win every game this year is a bit much. But it should make him better down the road the more experience he gets in those games like last week, and the playoffs this year.Having a QB is everything - and we've got a great one - rest assured that will mean something for years to come if the rest of the roster is weeded out and improved.Palmer is the only reason we're in the playoffs this year I believe (makes coaches look awful good), and is the reason this team can beat anyone on the right day. Rudi Johnson is a big part of it as well. Deltha O'Neil is a big part of it. Our extremely solid offensive line is an even bigger part of it.Palmer is just the QB. Quote
bengalboomer7 Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 I slightly agree with Shula. Remember, this is close to the team Kitna took to 8-8 and won Comeback player of the year. A franchise QB is one of if not the most important component to a winning team.Think Bradshaw, Montana, Brady, Elway, Aikman. All franchise QB's, and all multiple Super Bowl winnersNow, that still doesn't take away the fact that their are 21 other guys on the field that have to make plays too. Quote

Remember, this is close to the team Kitna took to 8-8 and won Comeback player of the year.Indeed it is, and in that 8-8 year, were we not just a game short of the playoffs? Also, look at the number of teams that didn't have a franchise QB and won Super Bowls.....Just from Memory, non franchise QBs who have played in the Super Bowl....Jake Delhomme, Rich Gannon, Kerry Collins - MAYBE ALMOST Franchise QBsBrad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Chris Chandler, Drew Bledsoe, Mark Rypien, Jay Schroeder, Tony Eason, Jim McMahon - DEFINATELY NOT Franchise QBs, journeymen at best. NJ29 Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 I would definately like to go to the playoffs, but I believe makingthe playoofs is a big step for this team. I don't think that we're a Super Bowl team this year, but we aren't gonna go from being 8 - 8 to winning the Super Bowl. We have improved this year, and We'll expect more improvement next year. Quote

We don't really have a defense. I think Palmer is 60 percent of why we are in the playoffs. Quote
Ox Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 Who cares what you attribute the playoff apearance to, I believe we can all use it as a GOOD excuse to get drunk this year after the years of helplessness. Ya smell what I'm cookin? Quote
