In replacing injured running back Kenny Watson on the roster Tuesday, the Bengals turned to an old friend and re-signed fullback Nick Luchey to a one-year contract.

They also made two moves on the practice squad in signing rookie guard Jonathan Clinkscale, a 6-2, 315-pound undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin waived by Tampa Bay after playing in all the preseason games, and cutting rookie linebacker Derek Curry.

After failing to reach a contract with the Bengals in the first weeks of head coach Marvin Lewis’ regime, the 6-2, 273-pound Luchey went on to play in 27 games with eight starts for Green Bay in 2003 and 2004. The Bengals have always liked Luchey’s versatility, and they used him at both running back and fullback when they drafted him in the fifth round out of the University of Miami as Nick Williams in 1999.

Luchey, who ran the ball 11 times and caught it three times for the Packers, opened 2005 training camp in Green Bay and was released Sept. 6. He played every game last season with six starts and had 24 yards on 10 carries along with two catches for 20 yards.

Nick Luchey... Isn't he married to Jessica Simpson?

Can't wait to hear the explanation! Do they have something against Jeremi Johnson?

Jeremi will be fine, they have to know his value to the running game. If Luchey doesn't just end up a special teamer, then maybe they simply wanted some depth behind Johnson to work with in case he struggles or is injured.

Special teams is my bet.

I can remember one of the last games Luchey was here, the last game of the year. He came in and kicked ass .I wish I could remember who , and his stats. for the game, but they were great!!! I will try to find them. I think he will be a asset for us. Or why else would Marvin want him???

Nick Luchey went wild against the Saints in the 2nd to last game of the year 2 years ago.

Just ran right over people..2 TD's and even pulled out the Ickey shuffle.  ;)

Yeah, that was the only game I made it to that year and I believe it was their only home victory that year as well. I remembered thinking about our own version of the Bus after seeing him fill in for an injured Dillon (?). Based on that one game, I liked him, but I don't recall him ever really contributing other than that game.

I, too, thought we would add someone who would help out in the return game or at least on special teams defense. Who's going to field kickoffs alongside Tab Perry? I would love to see Chris Perry get a shot back there.

Weird timing, as I just his cut mentioned on ESPN/Pro Football Weekly's "whispers around the NFL." It said they released him because of his "fluctuating weight and a lack of urgency" and that while he could be a "devastating blocker" he didn't get work as an I-back like he did with Cincinnati, didn't catch well, and couldn't play special teams because of his weight and poor tackling.

Has he always gone by his present name, for some reason I think he has changed his name at some point ?? I'm also further confused by signing a FB cause a RB has secumbed to injury, or could it be that Jeremi has improved to the point that we need another large fullback for the RB's to follow through the hole??

Jeremy Johnson is a mediocre fullback who has had his own weight problems. His blocking leaves alot to be desired. Luchey's blocking was much better at times, but he was lazy and took plays off. I'm not sure how he is any more of an answer than J.J. This move leaves me scratching my head.

Wow, no offense freek, but judging from ML's comments, you could not be more wrong.

Apparently Luchey coming back to back-up Johnson is a nod to the fact that they now consider Johnson a viable back-up for main back carries to Rudi. And Johnson blocks like another lineman out there.

Johnson's role on this team is expanding, not shrinking, and the coaches would not be doing that if they did not love what he was bringing to the team.
