Patriots | Offered Leach a Spot on Their Practice Squad?Fri, 9 Sep 2005 21:43:51 -0700

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the New England Patriots offered FB Vonta Leach a spot on their practice squad before he re-signed with the Green Bay Packers.

Bengals | Apparently Wanted to Sign Leach?Fri, 9 Sep 2005 21:32:07 -0700

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the Cincinnati Bengals wanted to sign FB Vonta Leach before he re-signed with the Green Bay Packers. Agent Ralph Vitolo was not clear if the Bengals offered a spot on their practice squad or their regular roster, but Vitolo told the Bengals they needed to sign him to their 53-man roster. It all became moot when Leach chose the Packers.

Packers | Contract Update: V. Leach?Fri, 9 Sep 2005 21:27:31 -0700

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Green Bay Packers FB Vonta Leach signed a two-year contract that included no signing bonus and minimum base salaries of $305,000 this year and $385,000 in 2006. He was to have made $79,900 on the practice squad.

Had seen a couple days back where they were sniffing around ex-iggle FB Ritchie, but didn't really give it much thought. Now this Leach thing. Jeremi Johnson shoot Marvin's dog or something?

As a fellow WKU alum, I'm gonna have to get cranky if Marvin tosses Jeremi under the bus.

whatever happened to cleditus hunt or lenardo carson?

WHy dont we go after Teyo Johnson!!!

Well, right now, teams are only going to sign vested vets (like Ritchie or Hunt) if they absolutely have to. If a vested vet is on the roster opening day his salary becomes guaranteed, per the CBA. But if they get signed after opening day, their salary isn't guaranteed. So expect to see a flurry of signings early next week.

As for the specific issue at FB...I hadn't heard, seen, or read anything bad about JJ. What few mentions there were were generally positive, and certainly the ground game wasn't hurting in preseason. But there were clearly problems last year, and maybe s**t has carried over we don't know about. Certainly the Bengals' interest in FB suggests that.

From what I've heard from Packer fans, Hunt has a bit of an attitude problem, is a chronic underachiever, skips camps a lot, isn't a team player, doesn't keep on weight well, is currently out of shape - and unless I've gotten bad info, is a two-time loser in the NFL's drug program. Doesn't sound like our kind of guy, hoping we lay off. I hadn't realized all that crap until I talked to an old college buddy from Wisconsin, and was kind of shocked that Marvin would even look at a guy like that. Kind of suggests a certain desperation, but I hope not.

But I know what you mean, there was a flurry of news about Hunt last week, the Bengals supposedly worked him out, then nothing.

Perhaps they plan on releasing someone to open a spot for a backup fullback? That sounds wrong, but I can't think of any other reason to do this. Jeremi has looked very good while he's played, and Marvin has lauded him for such.

Yup, I kinda figured they had put the hunt for Hunt on the back burner until next week. The need is there due to the Clemons suspension, but DC's comments are enough to give anyone reason to pause.

The stuff about adding another FB is a little bit of a beard scratcher, but maybe we're just reading too much into it due to the position played and the scant chance the Bengals will carry two FB's. I think Ritchie used to be a very solid special team player.
