We MUST start Fast

I usually listen to Jim Rome on lunch, but today it was pre-empted by the Reds game. Instead of being pissed that Griffey is hurt AGAIN, I turned it over to the four letter.

CC had some interesting stats today. He seems to think that we, along with about 4 other teams, absolutely have to win the opener. His stats are as follows:

In 2004

11 of the 12 playoff teams won their week 1 matchup

Over the Last 2 seasons

The combined Superbowl teams win/loss records are a staggering 66-10!!! :o

I mean good freakin grief!!

He also mentioned that it doesn't matter too much on what teams like the Pats, Eagles, Falcons or Colts do week 1, only some of the "bubble" teams. Those he mentioned were the Bengals, Detroit and Green Bay.

I have to say I for once agree with the man, we've GOT to get a W this Sunday!

A couple of days ago I opened up my Los Angeles Times sports page and was surprised to see Willie Andersons smiling mug at the top of page two. Under the photo was a caption stating something like..."We can't sugarcoat this thing. If we're the playoff team we think we are we've got to go up there [Cleveland] and win. No excuses."

I like that. Put your balls on the table and let 'em chop 'em off if you can't win. I wish more guys had that win or die attitude.

What if we held all of the players pets in a room deep in the bowels of PBS and if the team loses we turn them into chinese food.

The next week we park there cars down there and should they lose we put a skunk in their car with a cat on meth and let them duke it out.

The following week we revive their pets and feed them to african fire ants.

The week after that they get kudzu planted all around their house.

The week after that we poor blueberry juice all over their burbor carpet in their homes.

Is the game on yet?...I think I'm only mediocre at torture ideas...I'm too damn nice.

jim rome sucks you shoud be listening to collin collherd everyday

Cowherd is generally too damn "The sky is falling" in every quip he talks about.

Rome is more my style. I guess he sucks so bad his ratings are still higher than most other sports radio shows. He is the industry standard. I guess you either get Rome or you don't!

I am a l m o s t ready to think this first game is "must win". I know that is stupid, but damn...given the off-season emphasis on a fast start, the fact that is a winnable division road game, and a good Vikings team waiting in Week 2, I am positive neither the Bengals or the fan base wants to contemplate an 0-1 start with a possible 0-2 and a roadie to Chicago in front of them.

Seriously, really close to thinking "must win".

Many say it's only one game, but I disagree. If it was not in the AFC North,I would. But since it is,we can't afford to lose this one.

I don't believe anyone in the AFC North will make the playoffs with a 3-3 record. If the Bengals lose to the Browns, they would then need to beat them at home, and sweep either the Ravens or the Steelers to go 4-2 in the AFC North.

The first part of being a playoff team is beating the teams you're supposed to.Any team can afford a week one loss, but not to a conference foe that's predicted to finish last in a very tough AFC North.

I cant listen to Jom Rhome more than 3 minutes.. His staggering stye of speech is monotonous.....I hate all the callers trying to be so cool just to talk to him...

( IM OUT ).....

:lol::lol:

If Rome disagrees with the caller, he'll make fun of that. Then five minutes later when it's time for a commercial break, he'll do it himself. He is as annoying as a radio sportscaster can be.

J.T. the Brick is the best, y'all listen to his show at 10:00 PM ET on Fox Sports Radio. By far my favorite sports radio show.

Sunday is the most important season opening game the Bengals have had in a long, long time. It's an opportunity to get off to a fast start, an opportunity to turn the corner, an opportunity to send a message, a road game, against an opponent we should beat, against a division rival, 4 of our first 6 on the road, etc. Make no mistake about it; this is definitely a MUST WIN game.

I just watched a video of Marvin saying it isn't a must win. No kidding, according to him it can't be since it's the 1st game of the season.

Well, that is certainly what he is supposed to say.

And, he is right, there are 15 games left in the season after Sunday.

That said, 1-0 would look a whole lot different than 0-1, particularly when your eyes scan across the standings to that all important divisional record column...

It's not a MUST win...MUST wins are left for those games that are the last resort. However, it is a very necessary win for the morale of the players and for this city. I know for sure that people on this site will be jumping of cliffs if the Bengals don't win. I know I'll be very disappointed, but it's not a MUST win.

I don't put a whole ton of stock in these types of stats. Real winners overcome the odds. The Boston Red Sox were told it was impossible to come back from 0-3 against the Yankees in the ALCS, and they won 8 straight to win the world series.

The Patriots are also making common practice of shreding all types of these stats.

On the other hand... the Bengals do not have the mindset of a "real winner" yet. Later in the season if they develop it, a loss on the road to Cleveland will not keep them out of the playoffs... but that mindset will be much harder to develop starting the season 0-1 against a division rival.

I also agree with ML that this is not a "must win". It is more important than a normal game... but I take the approach that there is no such thing as a "must win" unless a loss eliminates you from playoff contention.

P.S. I hope these week 1 stats play out true, because I expect the Ravens to take a loss against the Colts this weekend.

Very well said. If we can't beat the Browns, then we're not ready for Prime Time.

This includes National Exposure and the respect of all the Sports Writers as well.
