The Big Orange Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 He and Mitchell both seemed to break off their blocks well and get to the ball...He was a little bit of a better sure tackler while Mitchell would get their, and then seemed to have lathered his hands and body with Crisco as they slipped away.Kim (our other female on the team-Kelley), is a wait until they come to me kind of guy. I can't see his non-aggressive style lasting long...he'll begin this year as the starter, but I doubt he'll end it as one...I really wish they'd pick someone up for SS. Quote

kingwilly Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 In run support Jones did nicely vs the 2nd and 3rd teamers. He was ouit of position in the zone a few times i could see but covered ground quickly. His 3rd and 5 PI call in the end-zone did not look like PI but still cost a TD.How he performs vs starters and picks up the schemes are all that prevents him from beating Mitchell. Quote

For an undrafted free agent he's looked pretty darn good. Best of all he shows up frequently on special teams and he made enough plays in the Redskin game that he got his named mentioned several times. Granted, they got the name wrong. Hernandez Jones? Stripes Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 He has looked good so far, but it will take a lot to get him on the roster. If they give him some chances against first or second team offenses, and he continues to play like this, then he's an excellent sleeper to fill the hole at strong safety someday. Marvin sure knows defensive talent when he sees it. Quote

But he and Body are showing enough to get longer looks and if the axe does fall both have to be considered for the practice squad. Quote
The Big Orange Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 Do you think he would mind if I just called him "Harry"?Names these days (Damn, do I feel old)...I'm gonna call my next kid "~"How would I go about pronouncing that? Quote

schweinhart Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 So far Indiana Jones=Wendell Williams. They need to get him in earlier vs. better comp to really gauge anything.I still think the best strong safety on the team is Landon Johnson Certainly can't be any less pedestrian than Mitchell and Herring just don't seem the part when it comes to knocking hats. ChewbaccaJones Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 It is pronounced Hernandez, just spelled Herana-Daze Quote
mtmeece Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 It is pronounced Hernandez, just spelled Herana-Daze It looks like it would be pronounced Hair-A-Nan-Days Quote
kingwilly Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 now, if he makes the team, we just need Herana-Daze to sack Favre in Oct. for the ultimate mutilation of annunciation. Quote
walshfan Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 Jones is an agressive hitter... I like that.. He's raw though... too raw to play much right now....Herring for no other reason than Mitchel isnt very good... Quote
alleycat Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 I still think the best strong safety on the team is Landon Johnson Certainly can't be any less pedestrian than Mitchell and Herring just don't seem the part when it comes to knocking hats. I know we dismissed this idea during the draft lead-up, but I still find it a pretty interesting notion. Yes Marvin runs interchangeable safties (not stong/free), but LJ ran a 4.6 at his combine. The average for corners at the combine that year was 4.49. And Herana-Daze ran a 4.5/4.59. Now that Pollack is going to be taking over that spot, it's an intriguing possibility. You could keep both guys in all three downs, and when Pollack rushes on passing down landon bumps up to backer. A lot of scout actually said that Landon's strength was in coverage and that he fit the strong safety mold in the pros better. BTW (Caleb Miller also ran a low 4.6. I'm sure I'l get railed on for this, but it's a thought... Quote
walshfan Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 never say never alleycat..could happen.... Quote
Sportsdoc Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 I live in DC..... he (Hera Daze) seems to be much better in run covereage than pass. He looked confused. He seems like Marq Manuel.LJ for strong safety? A post a couple of months ago by Critical Mass suggested that but the mass of bengal fans in the zone said no way.I think it might be interesting............. reminds me of the days when Fulcher was busting skulls.........Tilda (~) Kilburn -- it has a nice ring. Wish we could have gotten a strong safety........I was not overly impressed with Ghiaciuc (or however it is spellled) but realize he is a rookie. ODee looked like the real thingBost 2nd team defenses looked subpar..........Thought Carlos R should have had two personal fouls for bad hits, esp the one on Carson when he was sliding...............I get to see the Ravens more so hope to give you all a little more insight on another AFC north foe....... ShulaSteakhouse Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 Landon's just too good of a LB to play SS if nothing else. Someone has to replace Simmons' next year. I don't think Miller can cover downfield, or Johnson ultimately. Teams would pick on them constantly...and succeed. The days of Fulcher are long gone, guys are too big and fast now. Quote
schweinhart Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 Landon is too good of a linebacker -- in coverage and in open space. The problem I'm seeing w/ him at strongside is he's getting gummed up by the TE. He doesn't seem to be able to shed the block vs. run or beat the block on pass rush. Playing weakside that'd happen less, but even then when he has played there, he's far less effective on his heels taking on a block to contain a strecthed run than he is angling and knifing his way from the middle. But there seems no chance he'll ever play safety for a couple reasons. Right now, there's only a handful in the league in the 220-225# range, old timers like John Lynch and Rodney Harrison and up and comers like Michael Boulware, Adrian Wilson, and Ifeanyi Ohalete. Then again every once a freak of nature comes along like Sean Taylor who plays free safety and is good enough in coverage to play cover corner if he had to. And he plays at least at Landon's weight if not heavier. All said, safety is still an issue for the Bengals, especially if the goal is to have interchangeable ones because it's hard for these guys coming in light to not get crushed by blocks near the LOS. Even more important to have a hard hitter in the box in the AFC North. The only one I'm seeing who fits the bill is Madieu. No offense to Indiana Jones. Quote
cover2 Posted August 25, 2005 Author Report Posted August 25, 2005 Ok! Let's call him Indiana Jones and wish him the best! Quote
Bengal_Smoov Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 I like this guy, Jones has shown good altheleticism and a nose for the ball. He is raw in pass coverage but he can get better. For a rookie FA he has impressed and he should make the 53 man roster. With more experience he could develop into the SS everyone wants. Quote
schweinhart Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 If Indiana Jones makes the roster then Anthony Mitchell shouldn't IMO. I just don't see ML keeping 2 at SS who don't look well suited to interchange w/ the FS in and out of the box. I'm hoping they go with Madieu, Herring, K2, Myles, and either Mitchell or Jones at safety and keep only 4 CBs (O'Neal, James, Keiwan, and just a 4th CB since Myles and K2 can both play some CB in an emergency).
