Best/worst NFL announcers???

AMC

Recommended Posts

BEST

1) Al Michaels

2) Cris Collinsworth

3) Dick Stockton

WORST

1) Joe Theisman

2) Troy Aikman

3) Joe Buck

And on a side note, I wish Gary Thorne did football. That guy is then best announcer out there IMHO. He calls a great baseball and hockey game.

But the greatest all-time announcer for football was HANK STRAM on the radio. May he rest in peace.

All Madden is anymore is a name. One more to list on the bad side is Mike Patrick!!!!!!! Everything that happens in a game he believes is the best thing ever! God, it's annoying.

That ESPN crew was awful. When Paul Maguire is the best in the booth you got a problem.

One thing about Aikman if you listen closely is he'll listen to what Joe Buck opr Cris Collinsworth said, then say the same thing only rewording it a bit. He does that alot.

And one thing I hate in an announcer is when they say 1000 times a game "You know I talked to so and so this week" Or "I talked to so and so last night , or today before the game"....That is very overused.

Best:

Collinsworth

I know I'm homering, but I like the fact that he often states his opinions. When he does though he doesn't dwell on it or jump up on the pulpit. I think he's very easy to listen to. My wife hates him. She says he looks like a bobblehead. She's actually got a pretty good point there, but I won't admit it to her.

Worst:

I can't believe nobody has said Don Criqui yet. I still remember him busting on Kitna in game 1 2003 vs. Denver. After he threw the underhanded INT (to Ian Gold I think) Criqui said something like "he has to be pulled from the game." Notwithstanding the fact that I was close to thinking the same thing, I can't believe a professional tv analyst got so hysterical during a broadcast.

I can't stand John Madden

Right On!

WORST!:

Dan Dierdorff (Dierdork)

John Madden

Joe Theisman

Dierdorff - Talks to the fans as if they are children. He belonged on the Monday Night Cast to talk to the "casual" fan.

Madden - Overstates the obvious - then misses the obvious call (even on replay)

Theisman - Doesn't care if a game is on or not as long as he gets to talk about himself and his "overrated" and forgotten career.

I wish they could send L.T. back into the booth to break his jaw like he did with his leg!

One guy I really like is Ian Eagle. I think his analysis is usually dead on and he is very thorogh. I actually like Phil Simms a lot too. I think he is very fair and isn't into useless hype.

The worst are the usual suspects: Madden, Theisman, Maguire, Dierdorf.

One guy who I lost a lot of respect for was Joe Buck in the way he criticized R. Moss for pretending to Moon Green Bay. While it wasn't the classiest thing in the world, Buck made it seem like Moss should serve time for it...give me a break.

Andteh thing that irritates me the most of all announces in general is the slack the give Brett Favre. The guy has won 1 SB but you'd think he won 10 the way he spoken about and the passes he gets from the media.

Jim Nantz did a good job replacing Gumbel. Man, Gumbel was terrible in the booth.

I like Solom Wilcots too. They need to move him up the ladder. Its funny because when he started on Channel 5 sports he was awful. He has really studied hard and honed his craft.

Best:

Collinsworth: I like his biting sarcasm. I know that alot of people don't like him, but I've always thought that he is one of the best. His ability to state opinions that will be unpopular and stand behind them is something that few announcers have the balls to do.

Jim Nantz: Good at announcing everything. Football is no exception.

Phil Simms: Extremely knowledgeable and doesn't try to overanalyze everything, which is a trap that too many athletes-turned-announcers tend to fall into.

And though they arent at the level of the best yet, I will give props to Wilcots and Johnston, who are good and getting better. And Ian Eagle is working his way onto the list.

Worst:

Kenny Albert and Brian Baldinger: I had never watched a football game and wanted to throw myself off of the roof or eat the barrel of a shotgun until I watched a game that these two were the commentators for. Good God, these two suck.

John Madden: If throwing the obvious in our face and passing it off as "great football opinions" is an art form, then Madden is Leonardo da Vinci. Awful.

Pat Summerall: I still hate him for when he and Madden were the Cowboys' own personal homer squad in the '90s. Horribly overrated.

there are alot that are just "ho-hum," like Criqui, but I really don't like or hate any of those. They are just there.

cannot really say i hate or like any of the announcers or play by play guys we dont get much of a choice as we only get 2 games live a week afternoon and evening games mostly its fox as our satellite company is owned by the guy who owns fox tho we do get the odd espn game. Tho in one i agree is madden he just repeats himself virtually every game kinda gets boring to listen to him.

i mainly listen brad and dave on bengals radio and i enjoy them tho lap is a major homer most of the time :)

On Brit Tv (Sky) the "presenters" we get are Nick (Mr.Pittsburgh Steeler hates the Bengals) Halling and Kevin Cadle who do a respectable job. Game commentary is from the US network (see UKBengals comments above).

In the past I can remember Mick Luckhurst (did he ever wipe that smirk off his face) who I just hated. Frank Gifford was there through the strike shortened season but I can't really recall if he was good or naff to be honest.

Nicky Horne from Channel 4 in the early/mid eighties is my best though - he was the face of bringing the NFL into our homes on dreary Sunday afternoons - highlights from the previous weeks games on a black & white TV - when there was f**k all else on, f**k all else to do, all the shops had closed and the pubs had not yet opened. Salute to Mr.Horne and Channel 4!

Im only going to name one person for each.

Best:

Al Michaels- the guy has announced just about every single sport through out his life time and is good at about every single one of them.

Worst:

Shannon Sharpe- Another player turned announcer. Although his IQ barely goes beyond his shoe size, his mumbled voice makes it damn near impossible to understand anything he says.

I'll agree with those best/worst choices.

For the two FUNNEST (is that a word?) I gotta go with Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long. They crack me up!!

Honorable mention to Tom Jackson. B)

The only thing I didn't really like about Lap is when he says "uhh ohh" and doesn't elaborate forever. You have to sit there in suspense to find out the ball was overthrown or something like that. I've even heard him say it before completions. Don't know if he still does it, I've have NFL Ticket for the last couple years.

Damn boys, I rather enjoy Joe Buck. I would rather have him in studio than half of the other talking heads.

Not to deviate from topic, but if it is announcers we're rating, lets throw in some NCAA basketball.

I F*CKING HATE BILLY PACKER! I cannot stress enough how much I would like to throttle that as*clown. I have never seen as blatant an a** kisser to the ACC as Packer. Overrated and not a 1/4 as good as he thinks he is. The guy might as well wear a DUKE shirt to the games.

There I feel better. :D

That's how I feel as well.

I also hate anyone who announces for ESPN.

They called Chad Johnson Charles, in the damn pro bowl?!?! Also the Sunday night game was the worse announcing I have ever heard in my entire life, and I am serious.
