Trade Possibilities

Found this tibdit out on Yahoo Sports:

Eagles coach Andy Reid has traded up in both of the last two drafts and has ample ammunition this year to make similar moves. With pairs of picks in both the second and third rounds, and concerns at the defensive line and wide receiver spot, it is almost a certainty Reid will put together a package of picks to move up from the 31st overall choice. Two likely targets are the Cincinnati Bengals at No 17 and Dallas Cowboys at No. 20.

The New York Jets moving up to draft Virginia tight end Heath Miller.

The Jets are another team that could target the Bengals at No. 17 and try to move up to take Miller. Though Miller doesn't appear to fit many needs for teams ahead of the Jets, head coach Herm Edwards may not be willing to risk waiting for Miller to fall to him.

I'd be OK with either trade as long as Thomas Davis and Troy Williamson were already gone.

I think the Bengals will entertain such offers, so they know who is interested, but won't make any decisions on those offers until they are on the clock.

why? they want to know if there is a guy they prefer to all open offers is available at pick 17. Example: let's say LB Derrick Johnson falls to 17. Ridiculous, but just to illustrate the point. Bengals probably would be inclined to make that pick rather than trade down, in my opinion.

Also, you only (and exceptions might be made where the salary cap is influencing your decision) trade down when you are fairly certain that a guy you want will be available at that later pick.

I see trade downs as likely for the Bengals this year, but not until they are on the clock.

It's these very type of unforseen/unpredictable transactions that occur just before the draft that almost totally skewers every mock draft drawn up by anyone anywhere? Now they all are scrambling to re-assess each teams position and probabilities, just due to this trade.

Why bother making up a mock until a day before the draft? Any earlier seems to be futile!

Trading with the Eagles would be the best move, as long as the Bengals end up with the Eagles picks at #31 and #35. They can fill their need at Center and DL/LB/S. That would give them 3 of the first 48 picks. All the experts are saying the real value this year is picks #20-50.

- Since so many guys on here use this chart to debate the values of certain draft day trades, I figured I'd post it so everyone could see what the hell we were all talking about. First number on left is the pick, the second number is the point attributed to that pick.

* NOTE * The chart is like a guideline, not a standard. Just because picks # 38, and 47 = 950 i.e. the value of # 17, there is no rule that says another later round pick won't be added because of the considered " value " of the player being traded up for !! :player:

Who is this Richie Ingognito dude? Is he related to Ron Mexico?????????

Incognito is the other center (besides Spencer) that Marvin had an interview with here in Cincinnati. He's a good player, but he has a temper problem. They say he has all the tools, but he's been kicked off two teams, lost his temper on the field and off the field, etc. But he's strong as hell, and has all the size and speed you want in a starter.

He's a BIGTIME risk because of character questions. Someone said he's the poster child for steroid use, and they might be right, but he's never tested positive.

So, to summarize, we walk out of day 1 with:

Dan Cody

Luis Castillo

Channing Crowder

Richie Incognito

Perfect, a guy who takes medication for clinical depression, a steroid user, a guy who has had more knee surgeries than a shop teacher has fingers, and finally...the poster boy for steroid abuse, frequent injuries, and uncontrollable rage. The next days Bungle related headlines will practically write themselves.

One of my professors wrote a research paper on the trades that happend during the draft. In it, he discussed how this draft pick value chart overvalues players throughout the draft. The paper is very academic and long (50 pgs) so I wrote up a summary and put it on my blog.

Evidentally a few teams have called him to discuss the strategies he lays out. But when I talked to him today, he said he doubts any will implement it this weekend. His best guess is that it will have a longer term effect on how much teams are willing to give up to get a player, especially in the early part of the first round. A prime example would be the Clowns trading up one spot to get K2 last year.

Anyway, I apologize for the self-promotion of my blog, but I think it's an intereting article that people might enjoy.
