Anyone else here happy we didn't sign Sharper?

Sorry, butthe guy is 31 years old, and got a 1.5 million signing bonus and 16mill over the next 5 years in contract money.

So basically if we signed sharper we'd be paying him 4.5million plus this year, now i know the signing bonus can be prorated over the next 5 years, but honestly are we going to have a lb at 34years old starting? NOO!!! at least i hope not, ok so chances are he would of been here 2 years.

so 750k over 2 year for the sgning bonus, pluss 3 milion a season for each of the next 2 seasons.

so about 4mill a year......

or we could have landon manning the middle for probably no more then 500k a year and playing pretty damn well at least I thought so seeing him last year.

Anyways just shedding some light on thisd cause a lot of you seem mad about not getting an over the hill LB for 4mill a season to play decently at LB.

Sorry but u guys are insane!!!

Were gonna need the cap money next year to sign Willie,Levi and Stienbach that's a hell of a lot more important to me, then Sharper, sorry guys.

plz think before you post. :player:

I'm not necessarily happy, I'll live and all, it's just extremely frusterating to always be the "they put together a nice presentation, it's not about money, blah blah blah, Bengals are going places..." I'm just tired of being also-rans. I feel like the Bills of Free Agency. Let's face it. The one mistake the Founder made was underestimating free agency when it started. 15 years later, Sharper would've been the biggest free agent signing in the history of the franchise. That says something.

Cool, another Sharper thread. Can't seem to get enough of those.

No, I'm not happy. Not broken up and crying in my beer either. If asked to describe my mood I'd pick mild disappointment. I'm not trying to gloss over anything, but I can't seem to screw up any despair knowing this team is no worse today than it was yesterday. [insert predictable whining response HERE]

Obviously, in order to be happy with the outcome you'd have to believe that Sharper can't play at a high level anymore OR favor a rookie over the proven vet. But unlike the Sapp opera of last year...ahem...I think Sharper can still play solid football for several more seasons. But not five more seasons, so file that one away for later. Plus, I loved the idea of adding another leader, and I loved the idea of freeing up the draft most of all. So again, disappointment, not happy, but still cracking wise.

I'm in about the same place as Hair. No, the team isn't any worse than it was a day or two ago -- but it isn't any better, either, and it very easily could have been. And that, so far, is just about the book on this whole offseason.

As for the money Sharper is getting, remember, NFL contracts aren't guaranteed. Of that five-year deal, Sharper will likely see only the first two years. I'd guess that he'll make about $6 million, including the $1.5 million bonus, in that time, and then will be cut after the 2006 season, leaving the hawks with a mere $900k in dead money.

I AM disappointed with not signing Sharper.

Not jump off a bridge disappointed but here we go again disappointed. Who are the so-called big names the Bengals HAVE managed to snap up over the past few years - Frerotte, Mitchell, Westbrook. Not a good record and one that remains in the same old groove. We had a chance of taking a very good player in a position of need and we failed to sign him.

Apart from the Robinson signing we haven't upgraded on the D which is the glaring need. We have not improved and although we're "no worse off" I feel that by standing still we'll go backwards.

We're in a division where teams run. They know they can run against us, and they will do, probably with as much ease as they did last season. If we can't stop the run against divisional teams we won't beat them. Don't win the divisional games and you won't win the division. Don't win the division and you may not make the play-offs.

I have a feeling that we might rue missing out on Sharper more than just a sh1tload of $$$ can justify.

With the proven success of Marvin's drafting ability should we really be too concerned about Sharper not coming to the TEAM? The progression of Landon Johnson and the potential to draft well again should more then overshadow any free agent who chooses to pass up a chance to play here.

Go Bengals!

Yea I'm happy we didn't sign a guy that's averaging 145 tackles in the past three seasons. Sheew, that was a close one.

So you're saying he was probably already used to playing behind a defensive line that couldn't stop the run, even with a 55 gallon drum of Kaopektate?

Tbh im disapointed he would have been a great addition to the struggling run D but we lost out simple as that get over it its happened nothing we can do about it so no point in bitching between ourselves like i have seen in some of these sharper posts.

I say lets give marvin and chuck the chance to turn the D around webster will be back in time for the season he wont be fit but a few weeks after that he will be and maybe he may be the answer, maybe hardy will actually perform maybe robinson will have a standout season u just dont know.

anything could happen hopefully for the better sharpers gone forget it let him langush in seahawk hell we are on the move and if marvin and chuck do their jobs like we know they can we might just be playoff bound with what we have.

nobody really knows how the deal played out with sharper he would have been a quick fix anyway maybe 2 more seasons of top play in him we have a couple of young LB coming through more than likley some more come draft day the future sure is looking bright im my eyes.

Sharper would have been a nice addition and while I don't like to see the Bengals loose out in FA again, he'd only have been a temporary upgrade. But I do like Cincy actually being a contender rather than being used for leverage. And I like seeing Cincy hold to their offer rather than overpaying. Football is a business and you have to watch your bottom line. Anyway, while somewhat disappointed not to see Sharper come our way, I'm not going to loose sleep over this. Great teams are built through the draft... and Marvin will be ready. :player:

That's some rarefied air you got there TP

The whole Sharper thing gone bad has less now to do w/ who plays MLB and even less than cap space for next year. This was a chance for an immediate upgrade at SSLB in the worst case scenario for coin that would've SAVED cap this year w/ a Hardy cut.

The upside outta all of it is that ML hopefully gets to use his talent evaluation skills to draft the next Jamie Sharper. :player:
