Keeping their own may be the theme of this offseason as opposed to signing some name free agents. After the 2006 season, the Bengals are faced with signing starting offensive linemen Willie Anderson, Levi Jones and Eric Steinbach, as well as right end Justin Smith.

Any contract extension this year would free up some space in 2005, as well as get a head start on ’07. Terry Bolar, agent for the two-time Pro Bowl Anderson, met with Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn last week at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis and said they had some good discussions.

There have apparently been no extension talks with Jones and Steinbach.

There clearly is going to be a big number for tackles. In the past week, some Pro Bowlers, as well as nondescript tackles have gotten big money. Highly-regarded left tackles Walter Jones and Chris Samuels each got $16 million in signing bonuses. Fourth-year right tackle Ryan Diem, a fourth-round pick, just got $12 million to sign with the Colts.

The Bengals could also cut some veterans to make more room. With Houshmandzadeh, Chad Johnson and Kelley Washington working on multi-year deals, does that make Peter Warrick vulnerable in the last year of his contract? A release would give Cincinnati an extra $2 million or so.

Steinbach they will keep. And by next year one would hope Stacey Andrews is ready to go, which would give us an option to Big Willie (love him but tackle salaries are out of this world and tho he's playing through them the injuries are beginning to pile up). Levi is an open question. He's been a good LT, but not a great one.

Ah, well, one offseason at a time!

Are you kidding me??!

Willie plays through his injuries. Thats what makes him so valuble. You never get rid of an o-lineman of that caliber, never. No matter what his age is, i think he deserves a huge contract extension, because he is the reason this team stays together.

We would be crazy to do that!

Levi can go because he hasn't really lived up to his potential. You can replace him but not a WIllie Anderson.

Plus we shouldnt worry about losing Steinbach next year either. If he wants a big contract, we will give it to him. WHY? We wont sign any free agents, maybe some worthless ones, but we'll have a good amount of money to spend.

I think they'd like to link such articles as you and many others do, but probably aren't too experienced in using the cool tag code buttons in the box above.

It took me a little while before I got used to using them. I was here for a month before I ever quoted anyone...now, as Josh has pointed out to me, I even quote myself!

They need to start working on extending these guys this offseason. At least sign Levi and Steinbach, that way you can franchise Willie if absolutely necessary.

I bet at least one of the three will be extended at the beginning or in the middle of the season, when all of the cuts have been made.

Yeah, but "we" are the bengals, remember?

If it were up to me, I'd happily extend Willie. Heck, I would have done it last year, this year at latest. All I'm saying is that it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they didn't. Disappoint me, yes, surprise me, no.

As for Steinbach, he's a fine guard. Great year in '03, got slowed down a bit by injury last year, he should come back just fine. And guard don't make huge bucks, so we'll keep him.

Levi has been solid but not spectacular, probably not worth the coin that LTs draw these days, but may get it in the end because the position is so tough to fill that even an average player is worth overpaying. We'll see.

Before you go knocking Levi too much consider that he plays the most important position on the offensive line and why is that??? The LEFT tackle has to cover the QB's blindside... A QB has to have the confidence that his LT can get the job done over there and not have to worry about getting hit in the back... Why doesnt Willie play the LT position if he's the best.. Because he's not that good at pass blocking.. He doesnt move good and isnt quick.. Levi can play either side.. Id keep Levi before Willie.. I think another reason Willie didnt want to play LT is the money factor.. Lt's generally make more money than other linemen.. I suspect "good ole Willie" wasnt offered that extra cash and chose to stay put on the right side...All this talk about him being such a team guy is bull.. He'll take his piece of the pie llike any other player and eat more if he can.....

Ok walshfan,

1. Willie could of left years ago, but stuck it out because he loves it here and wanted to help this team win.

2. He is a great Pass blocker

3. This year was called for his first holding penalty, in what like 5 years.

4. HE is THE team player. He is always around supporting the team, you never here him saying hes the best player, or crys about money(rudi)

5. He plays through injuries, Levi sits around and crys about them

6. DOesnt get in trouble with the law, if you may remeber Levi got in trouble with the law before last season

7. Levi has been good at times, but he knew he would never live up to being a Top 10 selection because he was suppose to be a 2nd rounder at best!

Has LEVI been to a Pro Bowl for his outstanding effort on the Left side? No I really don't think so. FIne go ahead and put Willie on the Left, I gurantee you he would do ten times better than Levi has done in all of his 3 years. And Walshfan, a lot of Bengal's fans look up to Willie, and we dont need you hatin on him.

If Willie is a great pass blockeer and is the best lineman you want to tell me why he's the right tackle instead of the left tackle?? Are you so stupid that you dont know the teams best tackle plays the left side??? Where does Ogden play, how bout Walter Jones or Orlando Pace.. Ever heard of a guy named Munoz?? Left tackle is the main position for your best tackle and Willie is on the right.. Hence he's the scond best tackle on this team or else he's too greedy to play over there if he doesnt get more money..

As for Levi being junk..Your comments are too...

If you guys are going to argue at least be civil about it. Willie plays right tackle because that has been his position. It's not easy to just switch over and change positions and turn everything backwards. I agree with whur chad at :o This is our Teddy Bruschi. And while the guys that everyone loves like Dillon and TKO who took the first train out of here as soon as they could, Willie played through knee pain and a career of losing seasons. You just don't get rid of locker room guys like that, and last time I checked Willie has been a pro bowler for two years now and the first player since Ambrose to be both a pro bowler and make the AP first team.

Well Levi aint no Odgen or Pace and never will be. And besides our most important posoition on the o line is the center. He is the one that has to make sure he gets the ball to the quarterback and block at the same time. And when you get rid of a huge team leader, your team goes down the s***hole. Thanks Bengal Boomer for agreeing with me on this issue

the center is not the most important possition on the line.. He has to call plays but the last time I checked you can move a guard to center ala Braham and a host of others and solidify that position...Your reasoning that he started over there and cant switch to LT is weak....The real reason is that they did ask him too and he said he'd switch to LT if they paid him like an LT.. I is a good lockeroom presence and has played thru pain.. Great attributes...Im just saying that Levi is no schmuck and you'll see how much of a schmuck when alot ot teams offer him big money after this season to play the LT for them.. If their smart they'll lock him up to an extension soon.. He also played with injuries so he's no crybaby.. that statement just ticked me off thats all..

why don't you comprehend the sentence before you jump down his throat.

He is saying that RIGHT now, our most important position, OF NEED is center.

And he's right.

Actually, I think that he meant that Center is the most important position on the line. And while the play starts with the Center, it tends to be the easiest position on the line to fill. Walsh has got a point by saying that LT is the most important position (just look at any draft), but it really would be a mistake to let Willie go.

This thread is really pointless, let me stress the word pointless.

I state this because A)the '06 season isnt here B)we dont know what will happen in the '05 season C)Unless your Ms.Cleo, you dont know what will happen in '06. It could be the Bengals best season.
