BengalsOwn
FREE AGENT UPDATE: Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh wouldn't confirm he has areed to a contract with the Bengals Wednesday, but all signs point to him on the verge of what could be a four-year deal with the club. He said he expects to meet with Dunn within the hour. . .bengals.com

HoosierCat
Just beat me to it, BengalsOwn! Good news...but of course let's not forget that Sapp was supposedly a done deal last year, then boom! The same update also claimed they're trying to get Williams (with the typical "he mite be too much $$$" caveat )The Bengals made contact Wednesday with Bills defensive tackle Pat Williams, but Jason Ferguson's deal in Dallas has no doubt upped the ante. The Vikings look to be next in line. . .NFL sources also said the Bengals made contact with a pair of Cleveland linebackers, Kevin Bentley, 25, a fourth-round draft pick in 2002 who can play all three spots, and Barry Gardiner, a seventh-year middle linebacker.. . . BengalszoneBilly
In my book this is very good news for Cincy, and bad news for all the teams the Bengals play next season! :player:
TippCityRick
I'll reserve judgement until I see what the contract terms are. I'm guessing that PW's injury is more to worry about than we first thought. That or they got a good deal to keep TJ here. We'll see . . . TJJackson
If it is more than 2 mil a year, it's a bad deal for the Bengals. 1.5 or less to be decent/OK.

HoosierCat
Earlier reports (last night/early today) said the bengals had sweetened their offer to about $3 million a year (with TJ reportedly holding out for $3.5 million/year). Based on the supposed deal's timeframe -- four years -- we're talking about something in the $12-14 million neighborhood.I could very easily see that structured something like this: $4 million signing bonus, salaries of 0.5, 1, 3.5, and 4 ($13 million total). That'd basically be a 2-year, $5.5 million deal, and they could cut or restructure depending on his performance. Cap hit would be 1.5 year 1, 2 in year 2, nothing that couldn't be handled. Chucktkd
I hope he does re-sign. Jimmy Johnson once said that the most important thing to do in the offseason is to re-sign your own players. Now if they just get some TE help and groom a center this is going to be a terriffic offense for years to come!!

Fact is Warrick has scored 22 TD`s in 5 years ...TJ has scored 5 TD`s in 4 years. That is over 400% more TD`s.Isn`t scoring TD`s, coverting 3rd downs, and being a threat to do bothso your #1 WR can`t/won`t be double and triple teamed a little moreimportant than total yards ? Well Warrick brings that threat to this team that TJ lacks.PERIOD

membengal
I would like to see this made official...Don't like the rug getting pulled out from under our feet...Assuming it goes through, a healthy P-Dub to go with CJ and TJ along with Washington makes the receiving corp dangerous and deep.Add in Rudi and hopefully a healthy Perry at RB with Carson settling in and the offense has a chance to be top 5 in the NFL. Been a long time since I could hold out hope for that.If they can just find a breathing TE threat in the draft...

TJ is not.Warrick scores TD`s...TJ doesn`t.Warrick is the best run blocking WR on the team..TJ isn`t Warrick. There are 53 guys on the Bengals roster. Where they were draftedmeans s**t to me. TippCityRick
I'm with ya Oldschooler. I hope that PW is healthy and available, but if he is and we pay TJ full market number 2 dollars, then I'm afraid signing TJ is a bit of a mistake. bengalsfan33
Man, we have to have the best WR's in the league if we can wrap TJ!
BengalsFan77
i think the we should keep warrick until at least the 1st part of the season this year. give him a chance to show everyone that hes still a big time threat and 100%. cause lets face it, if we did resign TJ for that much, theres no way that we can afford a healthy warrick next season. especially if he has a huge year. but by holding on to him for a little longer, it would greatly improve his worth via trade.although thats just my 2 cents

Of course, if Warrick isn't healthy, signing TJ is genius. But setting that aside, as I noted earlier, given the rumored parameters it's easy to construct a deal that keeps TJ's cap hit low for the next two years. Heck, under the hypothetical I constructed earlier, even if we cut him after 2005 so we could give a big deal to Warrick and keep oldschooler happy the cost in dead money would be a paltry $1 million. TJJackson
1 mil is 1 mil.1 mil you don't have to give to a FA defensive stud who might have come here if you'd have had the extra 1 mil to give to him.Dead money is bad. Very bad. Ask a Titan fan, or a Niners fan.
TippCityRick
Of course, if Warrick isn't healthy, signing TJ is genius.True, but only if Warrick is healthy. My point is that we need proven defensive players, and if paying two receivers number 2 dollars keeps us from signing a run stopping Dlineman or linebacker then we have misspent our money. As I have said either here or elsewhere, I'd rather a healthy PW cuz he is more of a threat then TJ, but only if he's healthy. If the Bengals have any sense that PW is unhealthy they should cut him as soon as the ink is dry on TJ's contract. Then use that money to sign Pat Williams, Ed Hartwell, or someone who can help us stop the run.

Very bad. Ask a Titan fan, or a Niners fan. Dead money is bad, yes. But there's a real big difference between $1 million in dead money and $35 million (or whatever the insane Titans number is this year, something like that). If we needed a mil to sign some FA next year, they could easily free that up. Tory James, for instance, is scheduled to have a $3.8 million cap hit next year. That has cut or restructure written all over it. Kitna is in his last year in '05 and has a $2.1 million hit that goes poof next year. And all that, of course, is the worst-case scenario where TJ sucks so bad they cut him, which seems rather unlikely. I agree -- but the liklihood of that (signing that top d-lineman/linebacker) appears to be diminishing rapidly. The Cowboys reportedly jumped on Jason Ferguson at 12:01 last night, and now Pat Williams is being wooed by the Jets and Vikes. On the linebacker front, hartwell would be nice but I haven't heard boo about the Bengals making so much of a call, and while Ian Gold has been mentioned here he's reportedly already off to Denver.Like I argued elsewhere, if the bengals were going to make a serious play for a top defensive player, they would have already undertaken the restructuring of deals and cutting of players only now beginning to be discussed, so they could come out of the gate strong. They didn't. So right now, the smartest use of our $$$ would be to keep our own guys home. (In short, my friend HairOnFire was right, but don't tell him I said that )
