Housh could have a deal

i think this is a lot of wasted breath. tj won't be re-signed. he shouldn't be. k. washington has more skills than than tj and marvin knows it. tj will walk (good riddence!) . we should thank tj for his service and i'm sure the giants will figure out soon enough that he's nothing more than a number three wideout. one season does not a stud wideout make. think about it: tj should place a call to carson tonight thanking him for throwing the ball his way. frankly, i think carson could make kevin walter into a stud on the free agent market...

I'm curious when Kelly Washington is going to show the skills you speak of....

how many years has he been here and his improvement has be marginal.

TJ has shown us something. He has stepped up and made some teriffic catches for the Bengals. Catches Washington will never make.

It remains to be seen if KW can live up to the hype, but this will be year 3 for him - coincidentally the same year both TJ and PW had their breakout years.

I would agree that 3.5 seems kinda high for a number 2 when you have a number 2 on the roster. Will TJ's signing - if it happens - mean the end of PW in stripes?

K-Dub has shown flashes but just isn't consistent in getting separation or running routes over middle. He drops some too.

But overall K-Dub should have the kind of year TJ in '04 if push came to shove. CP's gonna make whoever is out there look great as long as the WRs get some separation and hold on to the ball.

I don't mind either way. I'd rather not pay him that much, but I have a hard time complaining about having our offense return intact. It should be one of the most explosive in the NFL this year, especially if Warrick comes back strong.

My only concern is that there is now no way we can sign any sort of defensive free agent, unless it's just another role player. Here's hoping Webster comes back strong this year, and Landon's injury isn't too serious. I'll also be hoping for another defense-heavy draft this year for sure.

Well, ya know what I think... ;)

As for what signing Housh vs. signing, say, Kevin Johnson might mean elsewhere in FA...I don't think their cap hits for this year would be that different. Let's say that Housh gets a 5-year deal for $18 million including a $5 million signing bonus. Salaries are something like 1, 2, 3, 3, 4. (Note: I am not arguing he should get this, this is presented for example purposes only!). So his cap number would be $2 million.

On the other hand, let's assume they can sign Kevin Johnson to a real cheap deal, like 3 years, $5 million with a $1 million bonus. Salaries on 0.5, 1, 2.5. So he'd have an 800-900k cap hit.

Net difference is about a million bucks, which would be simple to recoup just by reworking Big Willie's deal.

Of course, all that assumes they actually have any intention of going after some big FA targets. If the sign TJ, I expect all we'll hear is how this "knocks them out of FA" from Hobson... <_<

Well, it pretty much does, doesn't it?

Unless, of course, the Big Willie thing comes through for us...

Hobson was on the "Two Angry Guys" radio show this morning and mentioned several times, "if TJ signs today....". Unfortunately the hosts did not question him on that one or persue it any further. As of last evening I had resigned myself to the fact that TJ would be going elsewhere. Personally I hope he stays. It looks like it might happen after all.

Hobson also mentioned Pat Williams as the guy that the Bengals should go after in free agency. He would be a big upgrade to the D-Line. He believes that this is kind of a down year as far as impact FA's.

He also threw out a few tidbits such as PDub and/or Kevin Hardy being cut to save cap space and the team is working with Levi and Willie to re-do their contracts. He also suggested the team may do the same with Justin Smith.

That's all very good news, IMHO. But as with the news that they're talking about redoing Big Willie, I again have to ask, where has the front office been for the last 4-6 weeks? You want to have the space when FA opens.

As for whether signing Housh would close them out of FA, skyline, my response is: only if they let it do so. That was what set me off in the "same ol' Bengals?" thread -- that their lack of cap space stemmed from their own refusal to free up space by redoing deals and cutting laggards, as is common around the league. Just redoing Big Willie and axing Hardy and Reggie Kelley would free up $4-5 million. Now there's word of redoing Levi and Smith, too; that'd probably give them a couple million more to play with.

Cutting Warrick is a bigger question. I think the only way that happens is if his knee really and truly is shot. I'd rather have him back, but assuming that his knee is OK and they sign TJ...he ought to have decent trade value. I certainly wouldn't dump him for a fourth like the Brownies did with Warren...but if someone offered a second-round pick I might think about it.

Yeah I agree, TJ is almost expendible as much as I like him if Warrick is indeed healthy and Washington can pick up the slack at the #3 spot pretty easily I would think. If they can keep them all and have great depth and injury insurance then that's great if other's are willing to re-structure or if they cut someone like Hardy to make more room.

Maybe them cutting Warrick is more of a possibility than I thought.

If his knee is fine I think it would be a HUGE mistake though, a big, big mistake.

I just don't think you pay a guy 3 mil a year when he has had essentially one good HALF season so far.

I think his cap number shouldn't be more than 1.5 mil TOPS and if he is paid more than that, it'll be disgraceful...because ultimately, thats money we need for better defensive players.

In the era of the cap, you need to not overpay a player, period, if you want to win, because overpaying one means you can't afford to have quality supporting players around him. Greedy players who want more than their true cap worth in essence are HURTING THEIR TEAM by reducing their chance to win.

I would definitely prefer to keep Warrick, too. The only problem I see is that, if they do drop $3-4 million on TJ, there's no way we'll be able to afford Warrick next year, when he's a FA. And tagging him isn't an option given that the WR franchise tag tops $7 million. In that case, assuming he's healthy, it would make sense to move Warrick this year while we were still able to get something for him.

If TJ walks, we definitely have to keep Warrick (again, assuming his knee isn't toast). But in that case we get to have this same discussion all over again next year: is Warrick worth whatever the going rate is in '06 for a No. 2 WR (presumably no less than this year's $3.5 million/year figure)?

FREE AGENT UPDATE: Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh wouldn't confirm he has agreed to a contract with the Bengals Wednesday, but all signs point to him on the verge of what could be a four-year deal with the club. Houshmandzadeh, who lives 20 minutes from agent David Dunn's Newport Beach, Calif., office, said he has been called there after Dunn talked to the Bengals this morning. He said he expects to meet with Dunn within the hour. . .
