Marvin Lewis and Chad Johnson shot a commercial this past weekend that will air during Fox's Super Bowl broadcast this Sunday. The spot for NFL Network will feature Lewis and Johnson singing "Tomorrow," from the Broadway musical "Annie." The commercial features NFL stars around the league disappointed that they are not in Super Bowl XXXIX. They take consolation that on February 7 all teams will be undefeated and preparing for a new season with dreams of winning Super Bowl XL.

Well, this ought to be...really, really cheesy...

Guys, it's just for fun.  So what if it's super cheesy?  At least Bengals players are actually getting invited to be in commercials again.

I agree. Are any of the Browns or 49ers going to be there? No, probably not. At least we aren't at the bottom of the heap anymore and we've got a couple of guys that people are interested in.

Somehow I don't think the concept would have worked with Bruce Coslet and Akili Smith. :D

 Living out here in the cowboy country of Arizona, all I can say is every rodeo cowboy I know is gonna be racked with jealousy over Chads belt buckle!

I've seen smaller ones on WWF Championship belts!! If he flipped it over I bet he could pick up a clear digital satellite signal from space!

Exactly. The Bengals getting included in something like that is a GOOD thing. Another sign that the franchise is no longer thought of as pro football anthrax.

Taken as a single example the spot will be fine. What bothers me a little is the way Chad Johnson is evolving into the public face, or media darling, of the new Bengals. Yeah, he's our lovable knucklehead, but when you're trying to sell a product I can't help thinking that he's just an undisciplined knucklehead constantly being linked to Marvins father-figure-in-a-sweater-with-a-pipe persona. A real odd couple. The goof and the guru?

That said, maybe Carson can't sing a lick.

Gridiron greats to sing "Tomorrow"

NEW YORK (Feb. 2, 2005) -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Super Bowl legend Joe Montana, along with nine other NFL stars will see if their singing ability matches their football ability when they collaborate for this year's NFL Network Super Bowl commercial to air during FOX's broadcast of Super Bowl XXXIX.

"I would rather have been playing in the Super Bowl, but I appreciate NFL Network giving me an opportunity to sing the blues away," said Roethlisberger.

"I can certainly relate to all the players who participated in this commercial," said three-time Super Bowl MVP Montana. "I have been fortunate enough to win the big game, but it never stopped me from thinking about "tomorrow" and trying to get there again."

The following is a list of NFL personalities in addition to Roethlisberger and Montana who participate in this year's commercial:

Jon Gruden (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and his three sons

Marvin Lewis & Chad Johnson (Cincinnati Bengals)

Curtis Martin (New York Jets)

Steve McNair (Tennessee Titans)

Roy Williams (Dallas Cowboys)

Daunte Culpepper (Minnesota Vikings)

Byron Leftwich & Ephraim Salaam (Jacksonville Jaguars)

In a sequel to last year's Super Bowl spot when Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and coach Bill Parcells joined a dozen NFL stars to sing "Tomorrow," from the Broadway musical "Annie," this group of NFL personalities have been selected to belt out their rendition in a 60-second spot.

The commercial features NFL stars around the league disappointed that they are not in Super Bowl XXXIX. They take consolation that on Feb. 7 all teams will be undefeated and preparing for a new season with dreams of winning Super Bowl XL. The theme is tied together by the song "Tomorrow" (the sun will come out) and communicates that football season never ends on NFL Network, which serves as the fans' post-Super Bowl remedy. NFL Network covers the Pro Bowl, NFL Combine, the NFL Draft, mini-camp, training camp, and preseason games.

"It's clear we have a talented group of athletes for this commercial," said Judy Fearing, senior vice president of consumer marketing for NFL Network. "We will let the American public decide whether that talent includes singing."

Chad hasn't done anything to me, and he's working hard at being the best player he can be. I respect that. Until he does offend me, I have no reason to begrudge him any recognition or exposure that he can get. He does self-promote well, but for the most part it's not in an off-putting manner. Whatever the hell the "public face" of the Bengals is, maybe Chad would have more competition for the role (to the extent that it exists) if the rest of the Bengals weren't so content to be colorless reflections of the "ubiquitous blandness of Cincinnati" (as a friend of mine once put it).

Why Steve McNair??? McNair needs to be a day away from retirement, not the Super Bowl. Watching the sulky expression on his face every time Billy Volek threw a TD pass made me like the guy less than I already did...he needs to go away.

If you're going to have a Titan or two on there, why not have Drew Bennett and Derrick Mason? I would rather see two of the young faces of that franchise instead of the most recognizable one who played in a 1/3rd or so of the games in 2004.

Sorry, just not a McNair fan.

But I'm glad to see Chad and Marvin on there...I don't really have a problem with Chad being the face of the franchise, as he is our top offensive weapon and the most charismatic player that the offense has at the moment...besides, the only people that will truly know him as the "Face of the Bengals" are fans of other NFL teams, and I don't particularly care what they think. I would have at least wanted Big Willie to be on there with them, but I don't think he would have gone for that.

WHO DEY!

Still hating how your life turned out? Man, that must be tough. Then again, how much could a bus ticket out of town cost?

Not particularly. Are you? Why don't you go buy one of those bus tickets? I'm sure I'd like the town better if you did.

I didn't initiate the personal attacks. Tell it to the other guy - unless he considers himself an integral part of the ubiquitous blandness of Cincinnati. In that case, I apologize to him for making a point of it.

Maybe you didn't, but you did carry on with it. In any case, both parties are outside of the rules with these posts. The childish "well I didn't start it" doesn't wash.

If your man enough to apologize, then I hope he too is...the "blandness" comment aside.

Just for the record, I moved from southwestern Ohio a couple of decades ago. But I didn't move because I hated the area or the people that call it home. I simply took advantage of employment opportunities that dictated I make a move, and I'm pretty happy with my decision. Things actually worked out exactly as planned. But I do miss the Buckeye state and many of the so-called bland people I left behind, and I return for visits as often as I can. As for where I'm living now...it's nice enough. Bright lights, sunshine, and cement ponds. Yee-haw.

Thumper, I'm not interested in swapping insults with you over this, but I've got to admit I find the idea of someone in this country living in a city they dislike to be pretty funny. Bus tires are round for a reason.

That said, in the future I think I'll let you complain without responding.
