HoosierCat
Bengals | Smith Fined for Illegal Hit - from www.KFFL.comSat, 25 Sep 2004 08:08:30 -0700Michael Russo and Alex Marvez, of the Miami Sun-Sentinel, report Cincinnati Bengals DE Justin Smith was fined $5,000 by the NFL for an illegal hit during the Week 2 game against the Miami Dolphins. Smith was penalized 15 yards during the game for unnecessarily striking a quarterback who was not pursing a play after Feeley threw a second-quarter interception.WTF? Man, when did the "F" in NFL start standing for "Fairies"? I thought the call was ticky-tacky during the game, but whatever, it tends to even out over the course of a season, we'll get our share of bad calls, too. But $5k for basically pushing the guy. Feely's on the ground, he starts to get up, we got the ball on an INT so Smith shoves him back down. Perfectly legit play, oops, here come the flag. And now they top off a BS call with a BS fine. The National Fairy League. Our motto: don't even look at the QB mean, he might get a trauma. kevnz
u didnt listen to the broadcast during the game then did u? its a mandatory fine given along with a hit on the quarterback. No biggie. But he wasn't a QB on the play he was a blocker cause he threw a pick and the Bengals had possesion. This is the kinda s**t that pisses me off. The NFL has taken it too far in an effort to "protect" the QB. If he wants a safe job go ahead and find a desk job. You step on the field you know the risks you take. :player:

No biggie. That doesn't change the fact it was a BS penalty and a BS fine. It only points up the stupidity of the policy.
ShulaSteakhouse
yeah I don't agree with the penalty/fine either, but the QB wasn't even near the play and Smith, in their eyes, took a cheap shot at him. You just have to play smarter than that I guess, a rule is a rule. If the QB were in position to make a tackle I doubt they would've called it. B24
I can't really remember it too well, but didn't Warren Sapp hit someone pretty bad last year or the year before that wasn't near the play and nothing was done to him? I always thought that once a ball is turned over everyone on the offense becomes defenders QB's included.Maybe from now on the QB shouldn't be allowed to even try and tackle a player if there is a turnover. The QB should just lay down and curl up in a ball until the play is over. If they are allowed to tackle, they should be allowed to be hit. Yea well it wasn't like Smith really Layed a Hit on him either....all he did was give the guy a little push.
Scottishbengal
Is there any recourse or appeals procedure?I didn't see the hit but if the League is issuing mandatory fines then surely there is a system for appeal. They get it wrong on occassion!
