  • HoosierCat changed the title to Round 5 (153): Jalen Rivers, G, Miami

Zierlein:

A burly offensive lineman with natural anchor and above-average length, Rivers is best-suited for short spaces, where his athletic limitations can be mitigated. He could get a shot at right tackle but slow feet will put him in harm’s way against NFL edge rushers. He’s sturdy at the point against bull-rushers and space-eaters. He works with stiff hips and below-average base footwork, which often short-circuit attempts to leverage and clear the gaps. He’s a clunky mover who will be tied to scheme, but his mass and length increase his likelihood of finding starting reps on the interior, provided he can stay healthy.

Why do I waste my time leading up to this moment when I know they are going to just sit back and let the draft happen to them?

Imagine you are Joe Burrow and you want to learn more about the guy protecting you and you read things like…

Non athletic
Slow feet
Stiff hips
Below average base footwork
Clunky mover

Hell yeah, put him in coach.

Requsite Hobson puff piece on Rivers is out.

One worthwhile tidbit buried near the end:

But his size, ability to learn how to upgrade his run game to match his pass pro, and his college experience of in-game rotation between guard and tackle also has them thinking he can eventually play both guards and both tackles.

Right now, Peters has him at left tackle.

"We like to major guys in one spot so they start to build the toolbox," Peters says. "It's a little easier for them to learn and then replicate those moves on the opposite side after they've learned one spot.

While not knowing a damn thing about this guy coming in, if he represents some solid depth on the o-line, I won't be complaining.
It's that time of the year when those types of articles come out, so I'm taking the grain of salt approach.

He's a long armed dragon.

Bengals have drafted plenty of Great Highschool lineman 4/5 star, power 5 starters under Tobin.   They always sign Free Agents or draft over them about year 3 or 4.   Nothing much to say until one hits the starting line up and plays well enough for a 2nd contract.
