I don't really care about his head coaching failure when considering him as a DC. I’m not even sure you can call it “his” failure. The Bears’ front office might be even more incompetent than ours. ArmyBengal Posted January 12 Report Posted January 12 Maybe Eberflus would be a better DC than head coach. I’m at least open to considering that. However, he completely lost that locker room, made poor decisions and was equal to the mess the Chicago front office was/is. If getting back to his comfort zone is a positive, I can get that, but they better be sure. They simply cannot afford to fuck up this decision. Quote
HoosierCat Posted January 12 Author Report Posted January 12 More ejections. Quote Now, WLWT's Charlie Clifford reported that senior defense assistant Mark Duffner and defensive quality control coach Louie Cioffi are also on the way out. https://sports.yahoo.com/zac-taylors-bengals-more-changes-191034807.html Quote
ArmyBengal Posted January 12 Report Posted January 12 Wow, just cleaning out the defensive coaching cabinet. In fairness, I would assume the new DC will want his guys, so good. 1 Quote
AMPHAR Posted January 13 Report Posted January 13 With the delayed firings. I'm guessing a DC has been decided and they are now going through the process of staff changes as a result? I guess. Or Lou is close to another job and he's tapping those guys to come along. Quote

HoosierCat Posted January 13 Author Report Posted January 13 Dunno about Cioffi but Duffner is 71. He might just want to spend more time on a beach somewhere. Quote

Since the thoughts of Eberflus seems to be gathering steam and my noted softening on the idea, I did some more diving into him. The large majority of Bears fans seem to think he would be a good - great DC and he will probably do well here since our defense was so horrendous. Some even mentioning what he should be able to do with the defense here should be enough to put this team right back in contention. He was noted to be well versed in his defensive schemes and had a unique ability to ensure the players understood what they were suppose to be doing within the scheme. Said the players would love his style and his reputation as a defensive mind is notable. A teacher and leader. His defenses in Indy finished in the top 10 in run stopping and takeaways all four of his seasons and were some of the least penalized. Ok, warming up now. The stink of his head coaching time is hard to get past. Quote

AMPHAR Posted January 13 Report Posted January 13 Not to say Zimmer would be a gamble but it be worth it to see if he could do what he did back in 2008. It seemed like an instant turn around. IMO, the best defensive units in franchise history. But he got so many miles out of former 1st round DBs thought to be washed. Newman, Nelson, Pac-Man, etc. You get that turn around coupled with Burrow/Chase. Could be a huge home run. All of sudden Pittsburgh Steeler fans are the ones crying "cheap" shot, lol. But he is also getting up there in age. Wonder how long he wants to coach. Quote
AMPHAR Posted January 14 Report Posted January 14 Wink Martindale has entered the conversation apparently. He is interviewing with multiple NFL teams so it looks like NFL is were he wants to be. Quote
HoosierCat Posted January 14 Author Report Posted January 14 Dehner says the bengals have no interest in Martindale. https://atozsports.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals-news/don-wink-martindale-not-under-consideration-for-bengals-defensive-coordinator-job/ Quote
COB Posted January 15 Report Posted January 15 You often ask yourself, who does Wink Martindale look like? Answer - If you go to a hunting and fishing expo and one of the tables is a dude selling a book he wrote about noodling snapping turtles out of undercut muddy riverbanks, Wink Martindale looks like that dude. 1 Quote

A couple summers back I opened my front door to grab a package off the porch and found it sitting next to a big assed snapping turtle, like a good 12 inches in diameter if not a bit more. Decided the package could wait. 1 Quote
ArmyBengal Posted January 15 Report Posted January 15 Wink Martindale ?? Isn’t that the guy that hosted the TV game show “Tic Tac Dough” ?? Quote

COB Posted Wednesday at 12:29 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 12:29 PM Let’s break it down. The odds of a guy even being named Wink. Not great. One in a million. Now the odds of two guys being named wink. Even not greater. Now we find two guys named Wink, what are the odds they have the same last name? And it’s not a very common last name. Something is fishy going on here with all these Wink Martindales running around. Quote
AMPHAR Posted Wednesday at 01:46 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 01:46 PM Tic Tac Dough was cool. But I always enjoyed Press your luck or Jokers Wild. Of course Double Dare. Marc Summers could probably coordinate a defense. If you can't get Summers, Marc Harmon would be cool. He used to QB UCLA. Quote
ArmyBengal Posted Wednesday at 02:49 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 02:49 PM I was going to recommend Chuck Woolery, but he apparently died a few months back. Guess we won't be back in 2 and 2. Quote

Loves the organization. Has offered to help with their search. Cincy and Dallas are his preferred spots if he were to continue coaching. Quote
AMPHAR Posted Thursday at 10:56 AM Report Posted Thursday at 10:56 AM Locked on Bengals podcast noted there hasn't been any movement with DC league wide. Referenced Dehner's opinion that the Bengals are the most desirable DC opening and people are waiting for the first chip to fall. My thought is they are waiting for a coach in the post season college or pro to finish up. Just a guess. Quote
ArmyBengal Posted Thursday at 12:15 PM Report Posted Thursday at 12:15 PM I’m glad they aren’t rushing the decision. I think Zac knows coaches will want the job as well and he certainly knows he can’t get it wrong. Quote

AMPHAR Posted Thursday at 05:04 PM Report Posted Thursday at 05:04 PM SI sources are saying 2 people are in the running. Golden and Patrick Graham. With Golden being the favorite. Then goes on to speculate that Golden will be the DC. We'll see. I like both resumes so game on for either one. I think Bears are wanting to Interview Freeman so that throw a wrench in the works. Golden has led winning college teams as Head Coach. So if Freeman goes then would he have a shot? Quote
