ArmyBengal
Brandon Tate also had a strong showing during the practice, catching most everything thrown his way. Often he was matched against cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, who struggled to break up passes both deep and short against him. Kirkpatrick also seemed to struggle with figuring out exactly where Tate was going when he made a move. Perhaps it's simply springtime adjustments, but Kirkpatrick certainly will be one to keep an eye on as Cincinnati continues tweaking its deep cornerback group. Rookie Darqueze Dennard continues to receive action both in the slot and on the outside. They call him Swagga! He's going to be great in the CFL in a year or two. It is pretty sad to see this kid flop, but that appears to be what is happening. Maybe he didn't stay in shape in the off-season so he's going to play himself into shape. But getting repeatedly torched by a depth receiver in front of all your coaches isn't a good sign.My expectations for Kirkpatrick are about done. If he comes on, great, but I don't expect it to happen for him. There's simply no way to think he prepared himself during the offseason if he's getting torched by Taint repeatedly.Yeah, Dennard better be the next coming for sure and the rest better stay healthy.Off topic, but this headline made me spit beer all over my ipad./>http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/11/jerome-simpson-im-worth-more-than-the-vikings-are-paying-me/So Jerome "Smokey" Simpson thinks he should get paid more even though he's had multiple runs ins and spent time in jail due to drugs ??I would wager he's still smoking a large amount of what he got busted for to begin with.Surprised ?? Really ?? Surprised he's making a million dollars on a one year deal ?? I think the word he should use is "thankful".Toolbag.
ArmyBengal
The moment when Dalton caused the most audible "ohhs" and "ahhs" among his teammates, though, came during the rushing portion of an 11-on-11 drill. Dalton faked an option pitch that completely duped the nearby defender, and the quarterback kept going through the hole untouched. In addition to all the running the Bengals are going to do this year, read options and other quarterback runs could be part of the arsenal, too. As much as his arm gets criticized, Dalton does have mobility that was seldom used the past three years. Late last season they started running more zone read for him. When they did, the offense more times than not, picked up big yards whether he kept the ball or not.I mentioned this not long ago when debating about Dalton and said that he was always asked to run while at TCU and was quite productive with it.Since coming here that simply wasn't an expectation placed upon him from the team. While no one will confuse his legs with Kaepernick's, I also won't pretend that he's not capable of making solid (maybe not spectacular) plays with his legs. HoosierCat
Some instagram vids from Lindsay Patterson:Dalton to AJ: http://instagram.com/p/pJiFqVDJ8Y/Leon & Boling doing agility drills: http://instagram.com/p/pJgvNYjJ6Q/Leon looks good. Boling just kind of rounding the bases...lol
kingwilly
Sure, it's just mid-level efforts in routes and drop/passing but Dalton just does not drive the ball. I realize he's not "gunning" it there but I see no snap, no heat to his delivery. It's not terrible looking but it's not the same as when you watch other QBs snap off a pass like that.I truly hope this offense leverages Hill, Gio and others in the run game. Flip the ratio 55-45 Run to Pass. I think they can go pretty far if they can run the ball effectively (which I think they will).Agree, Leon looks like he's far along. His effort there was about 60% speed. Boling still looks tender legged. Probably more therapeutic efforts than anything. I doubt Boling is ready for camp, which explains the vet OT signing. Kazkal
Well that's kinda sad when Kirkpatrick is getting beat by our worst WR.
HoosierCat
Yah, but it's just minicamp. Fingers crossed!
ArmyBengal
I will just put faith in the fact that all of the WR's are saying how much zip there is on the throws by Dalton. The coaches saying it is good as well, but I would rather hear that from the WR's themselves. They are certainly a better guage for that.Hearing that from anyone makes me feel better, because that has been an issue for him to improve upon for sure. HoosierCat
Today's OTA summary from Hobs:/>http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/Quick-hits-Lewis-sends-a-message/362ee388-f8d2-4623-b7ab-beabbab43fc2Not much there. Lewis apparently jumped their collective sh*t for something or other, but it sounds like they were just a little sloppy.Per Harvey, Hunt and Dennard got a lot of time with the ones today. HoosierCat
Dehner has a nice article on Cobi Hamilton:Inside the Bengals wide receiver room, excuses are tolerated less than drops. Among a group all asked to play and produce immediately and whose version of a veteran is 26-year-old Brandon Tate, expectations arrive faster than a 5-yard-slant fastball.Cobi Hamilton understands this basic truth. It doesn't take an aeronautical engineer to count to six in the crowded wide receivers room these days. His time is now.Hamilton, a sixth-round pick last season, drew praise with receivers coach James Urban calling him the most improved receiver on the team during a season spent on the practice squad. This from a player who rewrote the University of Arkansas record books with 90 receptions and 1,335 receiving yards his senior year.He displayed flashes of brilliance during this month's offseason training camp blowing by defensive backs and hauling in acrobatic contested catches in the back of the end zone. He's also shown flashes of disappointment late in camp with a collection of drops.More here: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/nfl/bengals/2014/06/17/bengals-cobi-hamilton-competes-three-receiver-spots/10714107/
ArmyBengal
Hamilton not making an impact on special teams doesn't help him in the least when considering the depth of the position.I am hopeful for him, but I still think the team values Tate FAR more than anything Hamilton is going to bring.I could be wrong, but i'm guessing another trip to the practice squad is in line. HoosierCat
I'd just like to see some insurance behind Marvin Jones. None of Sanzenbacher, Tate or Whalen can do what he does. IMHO Hamilton is the best alternative, assuming he can pull it together.
ArmyBengal
I've been saying the same thing all along about Tate and Whalen, but regardless of how much I disagree with them being here, here they remain.I just haven't seen anything to make me think that changes any time soon. I hope Hamilton just destroys it in camps though. Make it tough on them.
HoosierCat
There's been some chatter about Tate being on the bubble based on the fact that the Bengals were trying just about everybody on returns during OTAs and minicamp, but Hobson seems to think that's crazytalk and Tate is a lock. ArmyBengal
I think they would be crazy to NOT try everyone on returns, but until they are blown away by what they see, I expect Tate to remain. Here's to hoping they get blown away. For the record, I always hoped Kirk and now Dennard would free up Adam Jones to do the one thing he was built for with this team. I'll let you know how he does.Oh, THAT Jeff Scott. How could I have missed that ??Good luck with the gutters and might I recommend gutter guards. One of the best things I spent money on when I built the house !!!Seriously though, this RB corps is going to be a pretty big battle through camp and preseason. You figure Gio and Hill are locks. Who's next is up for grabs.I know they say BJGE has a place on this roster, but I can't say as I agree with the talk.Peerman is a teams player and I want to see what Burkhead brings this year.
