Gruden getting attention

The feeling had been growing on me for a while that Jay wasn't exactly the sharpest tack in the box. He isn't stupid (I think) but not the mentally quickest guy out there.

The DC media will eat him alive.

You should have listened to his press conference earlier. They did exactly that.

Didn't and couldn't listen. How do you mean, did they criticize the owner, jay's offense, what?

Media: Looking at what this team went through last season, what do you plan to do to address it?

JG: I don't know what happened and I don't care.

Media: Youre saying that a story that was in the national media and you didn't know about it? Do you want to rephrase your answer?

Gruden: What I mean is...

I think he's trying to avoid being pulled into the stories about RG3, Shanahan and Snyder. No one can fault him for wanting to avoid even acknowledging it. The DC media fans those flames, why permit your response to toss another log onto the fire? Also, he's tring to hit the "reset" button, and clear out all that stuff. Why let an idiot journalist inject that topic into your big announcement?

And I'm not defending Gruden, its just how I see it.

Even setting aside the reporters, the spotlight in DC is just so much bigger than anyplace else he's been before. Jay steps out his front door to get the paper and it's news. The night before he did his deal there were tweets and pics of him out to dinner with Skins brass. The media bubble will be omnipresent.

Now, maybe Jay can rise to the occasion, but he just went from the equivalent of Pee-Wee to MLB. Rough ride indeed.

Paul Guenther surfaces as a defensive coordinator candidate

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 10, 2014, 4:54 PM EST

Bengals linebackers coach Paul Guenther is emerging as a potential defensive coordinator in multiple places.

Guenther could head to Washington to be the defensive coordinator for new head coach Jay Gruden, as reported on Thursday by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Adam Caplan of ESPN reported today that Gruden is interested in talking to Guenther, but that the Bengals could block that move because they might want to hold on to Guenther themselves so they can promote him to defensive coordinator if Mike Zimmer leaves to become a head coach elsewhere. It’s also possible that if Zimmer gets a head-coaching job, Guenther could follow him and become Zimmer’s defensive coordinator.

Guenther is under contract to the Bengals for the 2014 season, so he can’t leave to join another head coach’s staff unless Marvin Lewis OKs it. Guenther has particularly received credit for his work with Vontaze Burfict, who rapidly rose from undrafted rookie to one of the NFL’s top linebackers.

Guenther has been with the Bengals since 2005 and previously spent two seasons in Washington.

From PFT Gruden trying steal our staff.

I thought Jim Haslett was going to me Grudens DC. And I think Lap already mentioned that Hue and Guenther could follow with Zim. So locking up Hue right away was a good thing.

Thats what I thought but apparently Gruden wants his own guy,Luckily Bengals can deny right to interview until they find out if Zimmer is staying.

I dunno if he'll be the guy but glad Bengals have control over it if they decide he is the guy.

But even if Guenther is their guy, I think they still have to go through the Rooney Rule process and interview a minority candidate since it's a coordinators position. So who do they bring in for that or do they just interview Mark Carrier and still give it to Guenther?

I am amazed to have just read on Twitter that Spielman from the Vikes will talk to Zim again next week. That is not the amazing part. Amazing is that he's interviewing the 49ers coaches today. They have a playoff game tomorrow at 1pm, and Rick Spielman decides for them to be considered for that job, those guys have to interview with him today. Not something if be too happy about if I were involved with the 9ers FO or coaching. In fact I might point out to Rick that a little professional courtesy would sure be appreciated and reciprocated.
