walzav29
He is well on his way. I can't think of any that were this dominant. Reggie Williams had a long career, as well as Ken Riley but they would not be considered best at their position. A few more seasons and it's a slam dunk, but it is great having a dominant DT. He was unreal Sunday. He is a bull. Quick. It's great.
Stripes
He's certainly on the right trajectory to be a valid part of that conversation. The most important step to be taken to ensure that continues is to keep him on the football team as long as possible.
Sea Ray
Way too early for talk like this. He has to stay healthy, stay as a Bengal and continue his excellence for many more years before we can say he's the best ever. As of right now he's not even as good as Tim Krumrie and he's no where near what Ken Riley accomplished as a Bengal. The NFL is a tough sport to say the least (just ask Carson)and it's best not to carried away with career projections at Atkins stage
walzav29
I can't think of a season where Tim Krumrie seemed as dominant. His most sacks in a season were 4. I loved the guy too, and I understand that a DT's impact is not just sacks. Longevity is very important though. So maybe not yet, but a few more seasons like this and it's obvious. Wraith
Coy Bacon and Mike Reid were pretty good in their day....Takeo Spikes who was awesome on lousy teams year after year. But I can definately say Geno is ONE of the best and appears will keep getting better, anyone know the status of his contract? Was his rookie deal 4 or 5 years?Found it, 4 years will be a Free Agent in 2014....pay the man SoP.

He's had a monster year, and I certainly agree he needs to be paid, but let's see if he can take the next step and play like this consistently, year-in and year-out. If he can do that, then we'll be talking about him going where no Bengal but Anthony Munoz has gone before.
HoosierCat
Oh, and whether he's the best ever, he's definitely the best in the AFC this week:/>http://www.cincyjungle.com/2012/12/27/3808136/bengals-dt-geno-atkins-awarded-afc-defensive-player-of-the-week

And it ties the holy grail of 151 registered by Cincinnati's Tim Krumrie when he was the best nose tackle in the game in 1988.)/>http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/Longshot-fits-right-in-with-Bengals/8aa315b3-2886-4f0b-8bd4-480f76319196
Dimster28
where that number come from? even that article said he have only 109 tackles on nfl.commarvin lewis count wrong and disagree with nfl's number?
HoosierCat
Yes, the Bengals do their own counting and it often disagrees with the "official" numbers.
Rick
Ken Riley, the Rattler, was better then Geno Atkins!

HoosierCat
Be nice, TJ. Don't make me start posting pics of fat guys splattered on the sidewalk. ;)/>/>Riley and Coy Bacon are hard to argue against as the best Bengals defenders ever right now. Geno's laying a nice foundation this year, though. QBkilla2 sounds nice. I just hope Mike Brown doesn't decide to "sleep on it" when it comes to resigning him.If there's ever anything that will convince me that the FO has finally pulled its head out of its a**, it will be resigning Atkins. ArmyBengal
Since this got bumped again, let me add that todays game is a prime example of what Geno does on a relatively quite day.He makes teams take him out of the game with 2-3 players and someone else (MJ, Dunlap) goes wild.Pick your poison bitches, because they will be coming at you all game long. Kazkal
Resign him now first day possible because he will only get more $$$.geno and aj are everything you want in your elite players high character high team high productiveness... I tend to.think no one man makes a squad be as good as it is but I do think Geno and Aj both do that..they better have new contracts in march mr Brown
ArmyBengal
Atkins is just one of those special type of players. If you look at his numbers from the DT spot, it's staggering. No one else is even close. NO ONE.There's simply no way you let a guy like him go.Get him and AJ done and worry about the rest later.Put the money being paid to Geathers from this season (a little over 6 million) into the pot and get started.Don't bring back Rey and draft an OLB or two after moving Burfict into the middle. Save money there as well.
TJJackson
Get him and AJ done and worry about the rest later.FWIW, I think keeping Dunlap is FAR more important than keeping AJDon't get me wrong - AJ has indeed finally blossomed - and I want to keep all three - but AJ is third on the list if I am doing the orderingThey should extend Gilberry asap too. Gilberry gets very limited snaps and is VERY productive in those limited opportunities
