COB
I'm not saying give up on Drew Brees. And I'm not even saying give up on Andy Dalton. Just give him some competition, in the form of Geno Smith, a top five pick who will without a doubt win the competition. Dalton can be a backup, Gradkowski style. Stripes
If the Bengals feel they must draft a QB, I hope it isn't Geno Smith. I fully expect him to be awful and will gladly eat crow next year if that turns out inaccurate. It's too early to give up on Dalton anyways. He has shown enough promise in his first two seasons to be given the opportunity to grow. His interceptions this season have been frustrating, but I don't think they must be perceived as a problem he is going to have forever. He didn't have the issue as a rookie. Let's see what he can do in football games not called by Jay Grudkowski or with a number two receiver whose name is known by more fans than just those of the Bengals. COB
Perrenial powers have one thing in common - a tall, strong armed quarterback. How were the Steelers before Ben got there? Up and down. They had Mark Malone, Neil O'Donnel, Kordell Steward, and Tommy Maddox. They weren't all that great with those guys. Ben shows up and suddenly they're a yearly threat to win not just the division, but the conference. We need that guy, a Manning, a Ben (even though I hate him), a Rodgers, etc. This year it seems like every fifth pass Andy throws comes out of his hand early and sails. DO NOT LIKE. He just isn't that accurate, which you absoluteley have to be.
ArmyBengal
Would I like Dalton to be taller than he is ?? Sure, but I don't think that's his issue. If we are basing this concept on stats, then he's a keeper. He's a shade better than 64% with his completion rate. He's thrown for over 1800 yards through 7 games. He's 7 TD's short of last seasons total. My issue are the INT's he thrown this season, but not all of those are on him. There have been balls going through hands and off helmets. Some stuff just happens that way. HoosierCat
Perrenial powers have one thing in common - a tall, strong armed quarterback. How were the Steelers before Ben got there? Up and down. Well, if you define "up and down" as just three losing seasons in 13 with those guys and 8 years in which they made the postseason, yeah.Oddly enough, the Steelers have been on a regular schedule since 2001: two good seasons followed by a down year. 2003, 2006, 2009 and now it appears 2012. They haven't strung together three playoff appearances since 1992-1997, when they went to the playoffs six straight years under O'Donnell, Stewart and future hall of famer Mike Tomczak. But if you want a big, tall strong-armed QB, I say we go after that guy I saw playing for Oakland yesterday. If he had any receivers worth crap he'd be tearing that division apart...oh wait, our receivers not named Green suck. Never mind.
COB
I didn't say I wanted Carson Palmer, I said I wanted Geno Smith. Before Palmer got hurt? That is exactly the player I'm looking for. Everyone in here just keep defending Andy Dalton. I'm don't think he's good enough. He's just too inconsistent.
HoosierCat
Dalton will be fine, he just needs to cut down on the picks. Other than that, he's improved in every other area: completion percentage, yards per attempt, TDs, etc. The reason I pointed to Palmer was that he's in the same boat as Andy. You can put the biggest, strongest-armed QB you want on this team, and they won't go anywhere because the rest of the offense not named Green is just not that good right now. ArmyBengal
Not only that, but we have absolutely ZERO running game. When combining that with the lack of a consistent #2 WR and the issues on the interior of our o-line, I doubt most QB's in the league would produce a winner. Seriously. That doesn't mean Dalton is an elite QB in this league, because I don't think he is. However, if we can get a running game going, shore up the interior of the o-line, get a consistent #2 and for the love of God, fix the LB corps, people wouldn't be talking about Dalton's INT's.
