Keith Rivers to the Giants

That appears to be a trade rumor floating around this a.m.

As we try to muddle through the lull between free agency and the full-throttle ramping up of interest in the draft, there’s nothing like a trade rumor to keep things interesting.

From Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger comes word of murmurs that the Giants may be acquiring linebacker Keith Rivers from the Bengals.

The ninth pick in the 2008 draft, Rivers missed all of 2011 with a wrist injury. He also missed nine games as a rookie after getting blown up by Hines Ward. (Rivers at least got a vote for AP defensive rookie of the year, despite appearing in only seven games.) For the two seasons in between, Rivers started 13 games in 2009 and 13 games in 2010.

As Garafolo points out, the return of Manny Lawson and the presence of Thomas Howard make Rivers expendable in Cincinnati. The Giants, in turn, need linebackers — even though they’d have to do some shuffling if Rivers would be brought in to play the weak side.

The bigger question will be compensation. Last month, the Eagles secured Pro Bowl middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans from the Texans for a fourth-round pick and flip-flopping of third-rounder choices. Rivers has a better draft pedigree but less of a career than Ryans. The Bengals may not get much, if they indeed will be moving on by moving Rivers out.

Well, I have said that I think Howard has been than an adequate replacement for Rivers and I expect them to draft an OLB (specifically the weakside). This wouldn't surprise me in the least. I still can't believe the Texans traded Ryans for what they did, but don't think Rivers would net us much more.

Rivers, while solid, has been hurt a lot and never lived up to being the #9 overall pick.

I don't like how they always talk about him trying to get meaner and more intense and we never see it.

I can't say as I would be happy or displeased with the move. The pick may change my mind.

Whatever the pick would be, my first instinct would be to package it in an effort to move up.

Hey, I'll take it. I've been counting Rivers as gone since last year, so any compensation they can snag is a plus.

Of course, now the rumor mill has kicked into overdrive:

Frank Cortese ‏ @Bigfrank612

@MikeGarafolo now I'm hearing rumors about Osi being involved and one of the bengals 1st rd picks, any news or can you confirm any of this?

Mike Garafolo Mike Garafolo ‏ @MikeGarafolo

@Bigfrank612 If so, that'd be a surprise to Osi and his people

So we trade Rivers and a 1st round pick for Osi and a 5th ??

Anyone want to comment about that ??

I really don't know what to think.

First impression is I don't like giving up a 1st for a 30 year old.

I believe that is just a rumor. I would do it though. Getting a key of piece from the SB champs defense? Sounds good.

That's where I thought you were going, I just wanted to confirm.

I still don't know how willing I would be giving up a 1st for a 30 year old DE that played 9 games last season.

He still managed 9 sacks in the regular season and another 3.5 in the postseason.

I think the Bengals would get more out of a first round pick at a cheaper rate.

I don't think they would make the move to get him. However, they need to improve the front 7 and the pash rush. With the first 2 picks they are not going to spend it on a DE. Chances are that we see a CB and hopefully a Guard. Two positions that we need to upgrade. But with the class of CB's being deep, it would be interesting to pick one up in the 2nd, like Hosely from VT, and get Osi to improve the defense as a whole with one of those first rounders.

But back to reality. They won't trade for him.

The Osi thing was clearly just speculation. It would be tough to see Cincy doing something like that. Osi is in the final year of his big 7-year, $41 million deal and is due $4 million in salary in 2012. I don't see them trading away a 1st to rent him for one year, and giving a 30-year-old DE a big-money extension would go against everything they've been saying about having to scrimp and save to sign the young'uns.

That said, Osi missed time with an ankle injury last year and there have been issues between him and the team over the lack of a new contract. So we'll see.

There was talk on a few Giants boards I was checking out that they heard it was for one of their 4th round picks.

There also wasn't a single person who was in favor of the Giants getting Rivers.

Why would they be? They're coming of a Super Bowl winning season. Picking up scraps from the Bengals seems odd.

It is a shame, because many thought we were getting an OLB that would solidfy the defense and be a probowl type player for many seasons to come and it just didn't work out that way. He never seemed the same after Ward knocked the piss out of him, breaking his jaw. Now the wrist issue that still needs to be figured out. He would still need to pass the physical.

Per Garafolo, the Bengals will get the Giants' 5th round pick. That's the last pick in the round, of course.

I guess we did better than SF did. They only got a 7th for Mays...

Later, Keith, Hope you have better luck in the Big Apple.
