Sea Ray Posted September 6, 2012 Report Posted September 6, 2012 Dalton's season revolves around that O line. If it is a shambles then we can't expect much out of its QB Quote
volcom69 Posted September 6, 2012 Report Posted September 6, 2012 Listening to a little Sirus radio they were not high on the Bengals at all. Most thing i found interesting was they thought Dalton was going to have a big sophmore slump. I sometimes worry about the slump as well, but Andy is a smart QB who dosnt let alot phase him. I just hope starting Monday that we see a different Andy, and a guy who looks like he is getting better on every play. So heres hoping the o-line gives him time, and hits the recievers in stride.Last year Pat Kirwan, who is on Sirius' Movin' the Chains show, and who I respect a lot, seriously did not think Andy Dalton would succeed. He's usually, at the very least, a wait and see type guy. But every time Andy's name came up, Pat would say he didn't think Dalton would be the answer, and he felt the Bengals would have a season similar to 2010. Now I listen to him closely when Andy's name comes up, but haven't heard him say anything overly negative or positive. I think he's in the wait and see mode now, a year late.Yep it was actually Tim Ryan on moving the chains who said he thinks Andy will have a sophomore slump. He says they will also struggle in the secondary, which if the Bengals don't get pressure they will struggle. I didnt get to hear Pat's comments though but I know they both had them 3rd. Quote
HoosierCat Posted September 6, 2012 Author Report Posted September 6, 2012 Let me give a big to Kirwan and his predictions. Yeah, like it was hard to come out and say Andy would fail last year; expectations were that the entire team would fail catastrophically. Some sports yakkers even predicted 0-16. Now, after Dalton crammed 9 W's and a playoff game down his throat, he's going to upgrade to "wait and see"? Way to go out on a fuggin' limb there, Pat.What a jerk. Dalton has shown he can play in this league. There's no "wait and see" about it. If the Bengals fail to make it back to the postseason this year (and I'm not optimistic) it won't be because of Dalton. Put me in the same boat as Searay (is that redundant?): if this cobbled-together o-line doesn't work, we're in for a long, miserable slog of a season. Quote
ArmyBengal Posted September 6, 2012 Report Posted September 6, 2012 I still say the defense's ability to get pressure on the QB this season is paramount. If they can't do that, they are going to be in trouble.Second, I think they know the o-line is going to be a concern and again, I would like to see them combat that by running 2 TE sets that would allow more options in the passing game and utilize Dalton's quick release. I see those short passes being key for them this season.I know everyone wants to see the long ball, but if they can simply continue to move the chains with short crossing patterns and screens, I would be equally happy. Just put the ball in the endzone as opposed to getting 3 when in the redzone. Quote

Ya gotta score points to win and if the line goes to crap, it's going to be "three-and-out city" for this club all season long. That means the D is going to be on the field forever and worn down to nothing. Quote

volcom69 Posted September 6, 2012 Report Posted September 6, 2012 Yea the o-line I do worry about! However we know Whit and Andre were going to be there, we knew Zeitler was going to start after he was drafted, for what it's worth they were saying that Boling was having the best camp of all the o-line and was pressing Wharton for playing time! The guy I worry about is Faine if he can make the correct calls and can play physical football then maybe it won't be to bad. If you ask me sounds like we have the line of the future in there other then Faine. They drafted Boling to start at some point right, well I guess better late then ever. Quote

Let's face it, some of their callers are morons, but both guys treat them respectfully. Common decency is in short supply on the radio, so these guys deserve some credit. They're still a little Bengal-phobic. But win a playoff game or two and they'll be right there on the bandwagon. Quote
