We have an easy schedule but....

The trick is actually winning the games. Giants lost to Seattle, Baltimore lost to Jax, and the Saints just lost to the Rams. A team can lose any game. It's impressive to keep on winning.Tennessee next. I'd love to see the Bengals at 6-2 with the Steelers coming to town. Just imagine if they win the next 2. Who couldn't they beat?

Sorry but I'm not sold yet I'm being a realist and things could come crashing down. They may not but if they do I urge all bengals fans to not give them stick if they f**k up against pit and Balt it's still a young team with a lot to learn but hey I'm estatic at what they have done so far.

Im sold that this team is good and building for the future, and with 2 first round picks in the draft will only help them continue to build this team.

Sold on the playoffs or anything, not really i think they are good and could win 8 or 9 games which is far beyond where i thought they would be, so im very happy. They are a bright young team that just seems to find a way to win games.

There are alot of tough games coming up, and who knows if they just take care of there business and not worry about what others are saying, then maybe im wrong and they are much better then i thought.

All i know is im very happy about the future of this team, and where they are going. Now if they could only find a running game, it would make things that much better for me :sure:

it's really impressive to win multiple ways: with defense, with special teams, with short passing, and now showing the occasional deep throws. Still not much run game, unfortunately. to me, it comes down to a couple of things.

First, the offensive line play. Sometimes, OLs come together as seasons progress. Look at Green Bay last year-- an absolutely horrendous OL in first 8-10 games (Aaron Rodgers lucky to be alive), then a really solid OL for the playoff run. the Cincy line doesn't have a lot of time together as a unit. each game probably helps. Will they gel? is there enough talent?

Second, the home field. Sometimes a team needs its home crowd to lift it; this team hasn't had that. Will that happen later in year?

Yes, exactly. The most common road to the playoffs is taking advantage of a weak schedule. Look at 2010. Both the Steelers and the Ravens finished 12-4. But if you break that down by the teams they played, you'll find that Baltimore was just 4-3 against teams that finished the year with winning records and 8-1 against teams that finished .500 or worse. Pittsburgh, which made it to the Super Bowl, actually finished the season with a losing record, 3-4, against winning teams. But they got into the postseason by going 9-0 against teams that were .500 or worse.

It's only when a traditionally bad team starts winning that you hear the "soft schedule" talk. When a good team does it, they're just "taking care of business."

That's one thing I have zero faith in. If the Bengals beat Tennessee and get to 6-2, then struggle early in the Steelers game... the boos will be raining down at the first sign of trouble. Bengals fans are dependable for that -- keeping the losing culture alive.

I do think that Pittsburgh game will feel like a neutral venue, not a home advantage. Lotta Steeler fans.

but I'd love to hear the players say that the Jungle fans lifted them to a win against Houston. that'd be huge. any chance?

At 6-2 would the game have a chance to be FLexed to a night game?

It would have to replace Pats/Jets so I doubt it.

Best candidate I see is the second game at Pittsburgh. The Sunday night game is Colts at Pats, and that will certainly be moved. But the Bengals still need to be in the running then.

"not really i think they are good and could win 8 or 9 games"

At the start of the season, I gave these Bengals an over/under of 3 wins... And refused to replace my Palmer jersey with a Dalton. Although I liked the value pick outta TCU, I believed that the Bengals could not pass on Andrew Luck in '12 and THAT'S when I'd get that new jersey. These are NOT the Palmer, Ocho Cinco, T.O. Bengals... a joy to watch; a TEAM! Intensity on D, big plays on special teams and a poised, accurate, young QB leader. This team and two 1st-rounders next year make me excited for the future! But c'mon... 8 or 9 wins would be a huge disappointment at this stage. 5 wins with 9 to play... 8 or 9 wins would equate THIS team with prior flops and continue the disappointing finishes of recent good Bengal teams but underachievers. If we wish to continue the plight, then yeah, be happy with 8 or 9 wins. Watching the difference gives me hope for THIS season... to make an impact this year... however unexpected it may be. Power rankings have the Bengals at 7 in the NFL (behind the Bills?? WHAT?) and they're starting to get national props... though still rare. Bengals haven't earned it yet. Looking at the remaining schedule, I see 6 remaining realistic wins without reaching to fathom it. 6-3 the rest of the way and finish 11 and 5? We shall see... Playoffs?

Thoughts on the division: I'm not as impressed with Pittsburgh's win over the Pats as the gushing National media is. New England has the last ranked pass defense... Ben should have been able to pass on em as he did. Steeler O-line is beat up and linebackers are diminishing in health. Continuing their run into the meat of their schedule may be tough - hopefully ripe for the picking in two weeks. Again we'll see... Ravens are Jekyll and Hyde, entering the season like world-beaters and the class of the division; laying an egg at JAX, disappearing in the first half of Arizona and then roaring back to win? They're an enigma... Still NOT gonna run away and hide as it looked. The next four weeks will tell and should be fun. Enjoy! Who Dey!!

Welcome back, wisk! Good to hear from you again.

I agree: after 5-2, 8-8 would be sort of a bummer. Of course, if you'd asked me in August if I'd take 8-8 and I would have said, in a heartbeat. That's what winning does.

But I couldn't get too down about 8 or 9 wins. That said, they have set themselves up, and you never know when you're going to be 5-2 again. They could start 0-7 the next five years. When opportunity knocks and all that. This is where the vets have to step up and get the young'uns to understand it all starts at 0-0 again next year. They have a shot this year, however long it may be. Gotta take advantage.

Man i see an old timer comin around here again, welcome back Wisk!

Im not sure yet what to think of this team, although im so happy about what the future may hold. While i would love to see the 11 win season, im just not sure what to think of the pass defense against Pitt, or even teams like Houston. If they can get tighter coverage, and challenge the recievers more i think that would help. Just seems like the last couple games teams have either caught the bengals in broken coverage or just beat them with the long ball. Fix that and i think they have a chance against any offense.

How about running the ball, im telling you if they can get there running game going, it would make the offense that much better. If they can get that going, then i say why not win those 11 games.

Man if they can put toghter a couple "complete" games where they look great on all aspects of the game, it would help out big time.

I think if we have sights set on making the playoffs we need to finish higher than either Pitt or Balt. If we can beat one of them and beat Tenn, we'll be set up well for a WC. My dream is to beat Tenn for tie breaker purposes and split the 4 games with Pitt/Balt. If that doesn't happen...oh well. I know the draft in April will be a blast because we can draft guys who can actually put us over the top as opposed to just making us relevant

Do they flex games that early in the year?

Yesterday, the league announced that the Bengals v. Steelers game will remain at 1pm.

Also, this was on Lance's blog. I don't see a big difference in these numbers. I guess we'll know by the end of November where we really stand.

SOS

From listener Jerome

Andrew Perloff's (SI) thoughts on your blog (Monday) annoyed me. So I did some research on the strength of schedule of Cincinnati, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh against all teams they've played, teams they've beaten, teams they've lost to, as well as the home and away splits.

Pittsburgh

Overall: 24-35 (.407)

Wins: 14-30 (.318)

Losses: 10-5 (.667)

Home: 13-16 (.448) 4-0 in those games

Away: 11-19 (.367) 2-2 in those games (road teams beaten a combined 1-14(.067))

Swing games: NE, KC- combined 8-5 (.615)

Baltimore

Overall: 23-29 (.426)

Wins: 17-20 (.460)

Losses: 6-9 (.400)

Home: 16-14 (.533) 4-0

Away: 7-15 (.318) 1-2 (1 win against 1-6 St. Louis)

Swing games: NYJ, SD- combined 8-5 (.615)

Cincinnati

Overall: 20-31 (.392)

Wins: 12-25 (.324)

Losses: 8-6 (.571)

Home: 11-11 (.500) 2-1

Away: 9-20 (.310) 3-1

Swing games: BUF, DEN- combined 7-7 (.500)

Just for kicks, total margin of defeat in losses- Pit:-35, Bal:-18, Cin:-7
