I am glad to see that they signed Marvin White. Williams, Crocker, Ndukwe, and now Marvin White. This may be the hardest hitting group of safeties in the NFL.

True big question is will they be able to get better in coverage, guess will see

I doubt it. Our D coordinator seems to value the intimidating hit, and he'll accept the tradeoff on the coverage end to get it. His choices at safety make that clear.

Perhaps you could make an argument that Coates stays over Kelly, but I don't see it.

I'm starting to.

I'm in no position to be able to judge Kelly's medical status, but I've always considered Coats to be his only true backup. Hardly unique, I admit. But I'll go one better to say that even though he's been described as the soul of the offense I believe Reggie Kelly now sits upon a far smaller but more precarious bubble than Coats. Because if Reggie Kelly can't continue doing the one thing he's good at then his value plummets. Decide for yourself how far. I'm guessing plenty.

So sure, Kelly makes this team if he returns to form 100%. That's a given. But what about 75%? Or less?

Meanwhile, Coats can play the poor mans version of Reggy Kelly far better than most and can give you additional reps at FB. Plus, he's been a valuable member of special teams for years. Added together it's more snaps than most might think. Last, and I hesitate to even mention this one, he's IS catching the ball much better....and he's looking for and getting extra yards with every chance. Better ball security too.

Pretty small sample size.... My concern is that Coats does just enough to look improved and then goes back to getting the "yips" everytime the ball comes to him when there's nobody within 5 yards. That would be like "fool me 3 times" because it's been pretty much the same deal for the past 2 years. I don't know who I hate most right now -- both our kickers or Coats.

It's not a given that a football player will come back from an Achilles tear. Doesn't look like Kelly is "back" from his and it remains to be seen if he ever will be. Ditto for Odom. The Bengals have a couple of tough calls to make in the coming weeks

True. Then again, it's all we've got.

Sure, but with Gresham and others onboard how many opportunities do you imagine the "other" TE is going to get in this offense?

He's a hard guy to like, I admit. And I'd probably hate him as badly as everyone else seems to if all he was asked to do is catch passes. But the exact opposite is almost true.

I'll keep reiterating...the Bengals like something in Coats. If they hated him as much as the fans he would have been cut instead of Foschi.

While I will agree that the idea of Coffman with Gresham is ideal, the Bengals still need TEs that can move bodies and protect Carson. What Coats has going for him is that he plays ST, can block, and can even step in at FB. You can argue that he's valuable. Now that he's caught some passes, he's even more so.

Sounds like Odom is alittle hurt again, and i agree i was seeing no push from the guy. If he is not back to 100% then i would rather see Fanene in there. Same with Geathers he is overrated, and i like Rucker in there more then him Rucker was getting great push off the edge agaisnt Philly something i have yet to see Geathers do this year.

The Bengals shaved their roster to 82 players Monday when they released guard

Jason Shirley in the “waived/non-football injury” category.

It is a pity to hear that. Shirley, a tough guy

Any guesses on who gets cut tomorrow? Or what roster moves are made to get down to 75?

I wouldn't expect many of the young guys to go yet unless they have no shot. I think they want to keep them around for next week's cuts and placement on the PS.

I'm wondering about Fui, Purify and James Johnson. I'm thinking that Fui is headed to IR. Haven't heard much about his status lately. Perhaps being caught in a numbers game for the other two.

Jeanty Cut & Nelson Pup'd were at 75...surprised they out right cut Jeanty but I guess best to give him chance to catch up because were just to deep at SLB.

Well that was easy enough. Surprised about Jeanty too.

The Indy game is Thursday evening and the final cut-down to 53 is on Saturday (9/4).

Too bad about Rashad. Always liked him. Hope he can come back & find a job someplace else.

I liked Rashad he was a good backup,He wasn't a play maker but he was just solid...I'm sure he can catch on somewhere once healthy though surprised we didn't pup him too but I guess they wanna give him a chance with another team since with MJ & Rey it's hard to justify a spot for rashad :(

Agreed, he provided good depth for the last couple of seasons. Probably was never a starter-quality LB, but his toughness will be missed.

I was at a local pizza joint week before last and they had one of those walls full of signed pictures of "famous" people. Right there was one signed by none other than Adrian Ross. (Remember now, I live in San Francisco.) I know, it's pretty loose connection, but cutting Jeanty somehow reminded me of this odd incident.

Sucks about Jeanty i thought he would be pup, but i guess they do have pretty good depth now. Some pretty good players cut so far, man the next cuts will be crazy. Lap said some of the guys we cut here would have been able to start for some of the Bengal teams in the 90's, and i have to believe that.

I hate to loose Jeanty, but i do hope this means more of MJ and Brandon Johnson.

This.

Add me to the list who liked Jeanty. Perhaps he wasn't what you wanted from a starter, but he was solid enough that he was always missed whenever he wasn't able to play, especially in the run defense. Not bad for a guy who was plucked from the CFL to be a poor mans Pollack....which he most certainly was.

Rashad Jeanty, I thank you for the fish. :phish:

Think the only problem with jeanty and why we finally moved on with talent we have was well he was considered a passrusher in the CFL...We just need saw that threat he was good vs run good vs the pass but was never X Factor..Truthfully he was sticking around though for once Rey moves inside we'll need someone to backup MJ.

I really loved this guy. Bengals defenses used to be known for being soft, especially against the run. Jeanty was a pretty big part of turning that around. He was a beast on short yardage defense.
