Kazkal
Even though he wore Black and Gold Rod Woodson was always one of my favorite players,So it's Nice to finally see him wearing stripes...Though it's only internship hopefully he likes it enough that Lewis will bring him on as a assistant to koyle SLANTS AND SCREENS» The Bengals have one former Steeler headed to the Hall of Fame on the offensive side of the ball as a coaching intern in former center Dermontti Dawson and Tuesday they revealed a former Steelers defensive back that is already in the Hall as a defensive coaching intern in Rod Woodson.Wearing a Bengals hat and ballcap, Woodson admitted he never thought he’d ever put them on. He said he would have back in 1997 as a free agent to join then new defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau if the Bengals played on grass and not the turf of Riverfront Stadium. Instead he signed with San Francisco for a year before joining Lewis in Baltimore and going to the Pro Bowl as a safety.Woodson is with NFL Network and his TV commitment is going to take him out of the last portion of training camp in August. He says he’ll find out if coaching “is in my heart.” Woodson called Lewis last season and said he and his wife had decided their children were old enough so that he could try coaching and when Lewis called back a few months ago with the offer Woodson jumped at it."I’ve been fortunate to be around a lot of players that impacted me that I’ve coached or been in the room with in Rod’s case in two different places," said Lewis, who also coached the Steelers team where Woodson made his mark as one of the league's top cornerbacks. "He’s one of the best football players I’ve been around. To go to the Pro Bowl at three different positions. As I told those guys I wouldn’t be here in this job if it wasn’t for guys like him and what he did and how he went about his job, which helps you coach guys on how to do their job."To see a guy who led by example, was the most athleticially talented player in the room, the smartest player and the most competitive player in the room says a lot. I told him just like Dermotti we’re going to take advantage of you. A great mentor and coach for our players, our safeties, corners and everyone on this football team. Can he be a coach of guys who don’t take it as seriously as he did because he took it very seriously. That’s the fun part of it. When I called him and asked him if we would want to work with us in training camp, he couldn’t hesitate to say yes. Excited to have him. As I told him upstairs it didn’t take long for him to start coaching out there. He has so much to offer both technically and gifted. His notes were like an encyclopedia. He’ll teach people how to learn."» Woodson has been saying on the air that Joseph and Leon Hall make up the best cornerback tandem in the NFL and he saw nothing to dissuade him of that proclamation Tuesday. In fact, Hall jumped in front of Simpson on an out route, picked off J.T. O'Sullivan and had green all in front of him down the sideline. BengalPimp
I like it.....But I'll tell you what I really like...Dermontti Dawson, that guy was one hell of a Center and LEADER along the offensive line. I think he has a lot to offer our O-Line (especially Cook).
ArmyBengal
I've seen Steelers fans make comments about them being in Bengals camp helping the "enemy", but they are quick to forget Kenny Anderson being Ben Rottenfurburger's QB coach for many years.I like having them helping out the team and would be more than happy to any former pro bowler giving advice to our team. Kazkal
Ya Like connections Lewis has with these guys too,Probably helps since Marvin was Rod's last Dcoordinator.

Especially with the off-season that BB has had.And if this is such a big deal in Pittsburgh why didn't the Steelers offer the same to a couple of their own? It's not like the Bengals broke any rules or did anything underhanded there. I thought the Rooney's were flawless? Or can they blame that one on someone else. Not a big Woodson fan only because he was such a nemesis during his time. However, hopefully he and Dawson will learn something as well as share some things that can help our club.

HairOnFire
Sorta funny. A couple of weeks ago the NFL Network showed a clip of Woodson "Guest Coaching" with the 49'ers, prompting me to wonder why he hadn't considered joining Marvin Lewis with the Bengals. Then I remembered he had actually played for the 49'ers and might have formed even closer ties there. I never gave the idea another thought. Weeks later..... I'd love to see Woodson formally added to the staff.

AGrizzlyBaer
Rod Woodson one of my favorite Boilermakers. I hope he can help the secondary take that next step.
Wraith
Heck forget Kenny Anderson, what about Dick Lebeau? He invented that defense while working for Paul Brown and perfected it as the long time defensive coordinator for the Bengals. The Bengals and Steelers have always seemed to be linked, do you remember a few years ago they brought in Kevin Greene? Marvin is, after all, a Pittsburgh guy as are the Hayes brothers.
Ickey44
I'd love to see Woodson formally added to the staff. As would I. His experience would be a tremendous asset to this team. Rod was also part of many championship teams, or at least, Superbowl teams. He knows what it takes to get there.
volcom69
I hope they make Woodson a contract offer i think he will be a great coach down the road.
HoosierCat
Two years later...Up in Indianapolis for a couple days during Super Bowl week, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said there isn’t a firm timetable on when he will name a new secondary coach to replace Kevin Coyle, who left to become Miami’s defensive coordinator.About the only thing Lewis did allow was that he is expecting to have one in place by the time the scouting combine begins on Feb. 23.“We’ve interviewed some guys and we’re going to talk to some other people and make a decision as quick as possible,” Lewis said.Lewis did say that he would consider Rod Woodson for the spot. Lewis has known Woodson since he was an assistant at Pittsburgh and then recruited Woodson to Baltimore, where he had a key role in the Ravens Super Bowl XXXV title in 2000.Woodson was a coaching intern with the Bengals during training camp in 2010 and was the Raiders cornerbacks coach this past season.Sounds like a plan to me. volcom69
I hope so, bring Woodson in and let him take over the DBs.Whats going on with the LB role, is Fitzgerald still here havnt heard much??
ArmyBengal
I'd be more than happy with Woodson as the secondary coach. With the thought of drafting another first round CB, how much would it help having a hall of fame DB to help the transition ?? He could even help Hall along as well. I say just bring him in and be done with the whole thing.
wpeldios
Would love to have woodson, but I am kind of partial. Growing up playing cb/s I used to watch tapes of rod woodson to learn proper footwork and technique.
jjakq27
I'm surprised the Steelers never made room for him on their staff. Is he coaching somewhere else right now?
agreen_112
I'm surprised the Steelers never made room for him on their staff. Is he coaching somewhere else right now? It's because he's never coached a day in his life.... On the other hand, hopefully we use a first rnd pick on a safety that Rod can mentor. HoosierCat
It's because he's never coached a day in his life.... He was the Raiders' CB coach last season.
ArmyBengal
Well he was the Raiders CB's coach last season, so there's that and I don't see any FS being rated that high to warrant a first round pick. Barron, while I like him is strictly a SS and we have about 4-5 of them on the roster that the coaching staff has already said they think will be just fine. Pidge
Experience and a winning mentality. Add as much of this to the staff as possible for the youngins to soak up.
