My theory is a Safety at #21

If were looking at this team to be solid it has a few holes to fill. If were looking at them to make a deep playoff run and be great, this team has ALOT of holes to fill. Safety is definately one of those holes in both categories. Mays or Thomas should be picked if there.

I'd rather have a DE, but safety wouldn't bug me. Very few things would, really. Mays'd be super.

Seems to me like the first round is relatively DB-heavy and for that reason, I expect at least one of these guys to be available at 21.

I do wonder, though, how many teams -- including the Bengals -- actually have a Rd 1 grade on Mays. Is he another Ko Simpson or Darnell Bing who slide down to Day 2 because of a hole in their game?

I'd be surprised to see him fall quite that far, but who knows? I think poor combine results helped to doom those other two.

Unlike previous years, I don't think there's a single position that's so messed up that it needs to be targeted early round 1 Other than QB, we also don't have a position that's so stacked I'd want to stand with what we have. So anything's up for grabs

I'm sort of ambivalent about it in general, but this year you take the best (non-QB) player available, bearing in mind that some positions tend to bust more than others.

It won't be Taylor Mays. The coaching staff has been saying they want to find safeties that can cover and Taylor Mays is one of the worst safeties in coverage in the entire draft.

Fortunately, I think we have a solid coach in Coyle, who is able to evaluate DBs on the basis of how their hips move, etc. -- and not just by their timed speed/combine stats.

I made the comment in another thread that when you lose both of your starting CB's and the other starting safety and come back for your senior season with news guys and expected to carry the load, it's simply to much. The guy is stupid fast for his size and you simply can't teach that. I have faith the coaching staff could easily help him improve on his weaknesses when he brings the athleticism that Mays does.

Mays should have left USC early...

Who says they'll stop adding safeties after selecting Mays? I can very easily envision the Bengals drafting Mays as a faster version of Roy Williams, and then adding a CB/FS type in a later round. (Ansah?)

If there's a place for Roy Williams in this defense there's a place for a faster replacement who brings more things to the table.

Hair, that is about the description i've heard as an endorsement for the drafting of Taylor Mays.

Spot on and it's not really even arguable as Taylor Mays is a Roy Williams clone and Zimmer thinks Williams is the perfect fit for our defense...

I'm at a point now where if Mays is there and we pass on him, I will actually be upset with that decision.

Thing is, I really don't think he will be there to begin with. I'm just wishful thinking I think.

With Roy resigned I like what a DE could bring more,But I'd take Mays & Earl over most if not all DE's in this years draft...Dunno I'm just not saying many DE's that wow me this year.

Does the analysis really need to extend beyond the fact that he's from SC?

California-centric thinking.

I hereby predict that if Mays is still there at 21, he's a Bengal.

Our defense will turn into USC East if we go for Mays. I'd go for him at 21, if not, defensive tackle is currently being Hobsoned on the team site.

Didn't Ronnie Lott play at USC? I know that doesn't mean a current safety from there will be just as good, I just like the symmetry.

He also said it's nice having Safeties who can hit and make people second guess coming across the middle...Ala Roy Williams so Agreed with Hair why wouldn't they want a younger faster healthier version of roy? Plus Mays always played FS where he really meant to be a SS.

Agreed just can't seem him falling in our laps more so with the Seahawks picking at 14...Teams could see taking Mays 49ers,Seahawks,Falcons & Texans >_<

California-centric? Possibly. No more so than the Bengals coaching staff has been, however. I'm just looking at recent history. And while USC is on the west coast, I went to UCLA and hate every molecule of that team...probably because they're good enough to beat the crap out of the Bruins regularly now. For that reason, and that alone, I don't object to the draft tendency.

Yep, the Bengals coaching staff does love USC these days. You went to UCLA? Then forget I mentined Ronnie Lott, and let's remember the mighty Kenny Easley. Dude rattled molars. Pity to go out like he did, though. Death by Advil. f**king Seahawks.

If Mays is off the board you just move on to the next guy. But hearing Zimmer talk about the way Roy Williams was STILL a perfect fit in his schemes answers most of the questions I've had about how Mays would fit here. Some of those questions include...What type of safety best addresses the increased amount of passing Zimmer forsees? Was there still a place for a true centerfielder with lots of thump? A FS/SS hybrid rather than Marvin's oft-discussed FS/CB hybrid? And last, why not both?

Mays certainly belongs on any Bengal fans short list....without reservations now. Whether he's the best choice if available is another matter, but I've always been very satisfied with his character and now I'm satisfied in regards to the role he'll play. So I'm good with it. And with Roy onboard for another year I'm excited by the opportunity Mays would have to watch a 5-time Pro Bowl safety as he did HIS job.

Last year's lack of depth at safety was eminent. Though I like Nelson, he had no business starting last year. I also am not sold on Ndukwe. If Williams and Crocker can stay healthy, I love that tandem…

I'd say pick up a safety in later rounds (after round 2). Get a skilled position (such as WR or TE) round 1 or 2. Pick best available in 1st (though Mikey won’t do it)...
