Sure enough... Per PFT.

The Bengals reportedly has signed a new receiver.

And that receiver is not Terrell Owens.

According to JOCKlife.com, a web site that shares an office with the agent of receiver Antonio Bryant, the veteran wideout has signed what is believed to be a four-year deal with the Bengals.

Per JOCKlife.com, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The move apparently means that Terrell Owens will not be joining the Bengals.

Unless, of course, the Bengals decide that it's time to part ways with the player who lobbied so heavily for T.O. to be added to the team.

And this from ESPN...

Wide receiver Antonio Bryant has agreed to four-year deal with Cincinnati Bengals, his agent, Patrick Brougham, told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Wednesday.

Bryant's contract is worth $28 million, a source told ESPN.com's John Clayton. With incentives, he could make as much as $29 million.

That considerably lessens the possibility that the Bengals will sign Terrell Owens.

Receiver Chad Ochocinco has been lobbying for the Bengals to sign Owens since the end of last season, when the Bengals' passing game lacked a deep threat.

"There's always been the speculation and perception out there [about coming to Cincinnati] and Chad kick-started it and lobbied to have me here as a teammate and I welcome it with open arms," Owens, who made a visit to the Bengals, told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Bryant had career highs with 83 catches for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns in 2008 with Tampa Bay. He needed surgery for torn cartilage in his left knee during training camp last year, and was bothered by pain in the knee all season. He finished with 39 catches for 600 yards and four touchdowns.

Cincinnati needs at least one proven receiver after releasing Laveranues Coles, who lasted only one season with the Bengals. Receiver Matt Jones, who was out of the NFL last season after Jacksonville released him for off-field problems, has signed a one-year deal with the Bengals.

The Bengals went 10-6 and won the AFC North last season by relying on their defense and their running game. They lost to the New York Jets in their first playoff game since 2005, struggling to move the ball.

Owens, a six-time Pro Bowl receiver, had 69 catches for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns with Dallas in 2008, and dropped off to 55 catches for 829 yards with five touchdowns last season in Buffalo.

Cincinnati's passing offense finished 26th in the league last season even though quarterback Carson Palmer was back from an elbow injury. The Bengals didn't have a reliable third-down receiver -- T.J. Houshmandzadeh left as a free agent for Seattle before last season -- and Coles failed to blend into the offense.

The Bengals also lacked a deep threat after Chris Henry got hurt. Henry later died in a fall from a truck during a domestic dispute.

Getting a receiver and a tight end are among the team's top priorities in free agency and the draft.

I hope 6'1 is tall enough for Carson <should be since chad is 6'1 heh>

PS,Well Antonio Bryant should be able buy himself a nice Birthday gift with that chicken scratch...Hopefully he'll breath alittle life in to the passing game...

Carson should fly him out to cali and start working with him.

It's underwhelming, but it's done.

I find myself in agreement with that statement.

Just nothing special that leaves me with the feeling that we kept up with the other teams in the division with this move, as I was hoping for.

Well the Ravens made a big trade I don't see Boldin giving them the edge when we play...The Browns & Steelers really haven't done anything that impressive IMO...

Now draft Gilyard in the 2nd or 3rd. :)

Yup with Gily I think we could have a decent Passing attack more so if Coffman could find his way on the field on some passing downs....

PS,Not saying top 10 passing attack simply improvement upon last season :P

Bryant was my choice, if he's healthy, he's a good #2. 4 years though - wow. ESPN is also reporting it.

Now draft Gilyard in the 2nd or 3rd. :)

I'm with you. Bryant was the one free agent receiver that I wanted. Gilyard in the 2nd/3rd round would be perfect. Now we can go TE in the draft or perhaps add depth at DE spot, which was also need.

Problem is Bryant is not the vertical threat we need. I wonder what their plans are for Jerome Simpson. If he isn't cut before the draft I'll have to assume they think he can play. Dare I suggest management thinks we have an in house solution like they did last year when we were all clamoring for them to acquire a center?

Well, he's a Bengal so I'll give him a clean slate. I just hope he doesn't revert back to knucklehead form. He has played 8 seasons, and this is his 5th team. As I commented a while back on another post, he's had 4 Head Coaches, and had clashes with 2 of them (Bill Parcells, Mike Nolan) that led to his departure.

Since he's a Bengal now, I will give him a clean slate until/if he does something.

I'm not "wowed" by this signing, but at least it's something. I'd still like to get T.O. if just for a year. That would be one hell of a 3 WR set...It's not like there's a cap this year....Sign T.O. to a 1 yr $5 million deal.

How is he not a vertical/deep threat WR?

this is a good signing, im surprised alot of people are down on this. i have a strange feeling we sign TO as well...

I don't think we can sign TO now. There's some weird language in the uncapped year. You can only make one signing for a specific position, that's to say that we couldn't have signed Bryant without cutting Coles. I think the only way we can bring in more WR's is through the draft. Someone with more knowledge back me up on this.

huh? one per position? never heard of that. that does not seem like anything teams or players union would agree to.

I reemember reading a tidbit about it but wasn't whole lot info about how it actually worked.

Not a vertical threat....the only thing Bryant is is a vertical threat.

In the last 5 years he has averaged (2009,2008,2006,2005,2004) 15.4 YPC, 15.0 YPC, 18.3 YPC, 14.6 YPC, and 13.0 YPC in contrast Chad's YPC over the same period is 14.5, 10.2, 15.5, 15.7, 14.8, 13.4 and no one is complaining Chad isn't a vertical threat. He is not a great route runner but has solid hands and is not quite 30 years old. I question 4 years because he has always played better when he has incentive to play better. He has played with sh!t QBs (John Freeman and Jackson last year, Garcia in 2008 and 2007, Alex Smith and J.T. O'Sullivan in 2006, Trent Dilfer in 2005, and Garcia again in 2004 not a strong arm amoung them except Josh Freeman who was a rookie). Palmer will definately be the best QB he has ever played with it will be on him and the OC to make sure this works. On paper I could live with a receiving corp of Chad, Antonio Bryant, Laverneus Coles, Matt Jones, Andre Caldwell, and a rookie (Gilyard would be a great choice) or Quan Cosby.

Look, I think Bryant is a knucklhead, but I'm not denying his talent. Your statement about "Bryant not being the vertical threat we need"

is crazy. Antionio Bryant has a career average of 15.3 yards per reception...THE EXACT SAME as Chris Henry (15.3).
