I read earlier that the Bengals "final offer" to Smith was less than last year's #6 overall in Gholston and much less than the ridulous contract that Al Davis gave to DHB at #7. I still believe something will get done this week with Andre Smith. They'll want him to at least have a week of practice in before the opener. It's pretty much the same deal as when the Bengals drafted Justin Smith, but I think the learning curve is a tad bit steeper for an OT than it is for a DE.

Well atleast he's not completely cutoff with them sending him meeting notes and working out with Tony Jones during his entire holdout...

Could be worse he could be in a Denny's bulking up:P

In witnessing the loud laughter that erupted when Augustus Parrish mocked Andre Smith's attempt to work out on his own during the team talent show (as seen on "Hard Knocks"), it's obvious that more than a few Bengals think he might be at Denny's and wiping his chin with the meeting notes he's getting from Paul Alexander and Co.

Anybody else getting the feeling that we might also be witnessing the first few months, in the latest failed career, of a Bengals 1st round draft pick?

Because they reenacted the 5 seconds of footage that aired?Andre Smith has been working out with Tony Jones almost every day who is a former Probowl tackle...

My prediction is that the only way this moves forward is if Andre fires Keels

Keels has decided he has to "win" this parlay, so he can continue his career as a sports agent, ie if he "loses" by having his client sign a lowball contract, he'll never be able to sign a client again.

Said another way - Keels is thinking more about what is best for Keels at this point than what is best for Andre

So Keels is trapped with no way out except to have Andre fire him and then spin it like "I was an hour away from getting the Bengals to cave but crazy ol' Andre, he just lost it and went bonkers."

Then Andre can sign whatever is on the table now, which while well below market will still keep him and his family and his kids' families and so forth well off for decades upon decades to come, far exceeding what he will earn if he re-enters the draft in 2010

Ochocinco says Andre Smith has signed

Posted by Mike Florio on August 29, 2009 11:12 PM ET

Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco, calling himself "the new source," claims on his Twitter page that tackle Andre Smith, the sixth overall pick in the 2009 draft, finally has signed a contract.

Here's the full text of Chad's tweet. "Attention: 1st rd. Pick Andre Smith has signed, the new source = Ocho Cinco, not ESPN, thank you, stay tuned for more info."

Trey Wingo of ESPN responded to Ochocinco's scoop by saying "way to be a jerk about it." (Said Chad in response, "I didn't complain when you were ripping me on TV, I didn't call you a jerk, I took and just child pleased the situation.")

Meanwhile, Smith's agent, Alvin Keels, has since posted a new tweet unrelated to Smith's status.

So, like Chad said, stay tuned.

UPDATE: A league source says that, at a minimum, a deal for Smith is close, and that "it won't be a good one" for the player. The sense is that, if/when a deal gets done, the player will be caving to the team, since the player needs the cash.

Source: No deal yet for Andre Smith

Posted by Mike Florio on August 29, 2009 11:30 PM ET

Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco reports that rookie tackle Andre Smith has signed a contract with the team, after a lengthy holdout.

And Chad shouldn't quit his day job just yet.

Per a source close to the situation, the deal is not yet done, and definitely not "signed."

But the source says an agreement could be reached in the next 24 to 48 hours.

The contract, per the source, will be "complex."

So stay tuned.

Smith deal close

GEOFF HOBSON

Posted Aug 30, 2009

a a Chad Ochocinco may have a future in the media.

He tweated Saturday night that the Bengals had reached a deal with No. 1 pick Andre Smith and it was picked up by the folks that never sleep at ProFootballTalk.com

And it looks like it may very well happen.

Although a deal isn't done, a league source said that agent Alvin Keels met with the team in another face-to-face meeting Saturday and are close enough to meet again Sunday morning. The hope is with the Bengals practicing at 3 p.m. Sunday that Smith will be on the field to end the holdout at 30 days.

On his own Twitter account Saturday night, Keels said there was no deal but the sides were working hard.

They are apparently close to a deal with a different structure that is going to be a compromise. Smith, at No. 6, sought a deal bigger than No. 7. The Bengals wanted a deal more in line with the rest of the first round. Indications are the structure would give Smith a bigger deal than what Jacksonville tackle Eugene Monroe signed at No. 8. That's a five-year deal that is somewhere between $28 and 32 million.

I've said for the last few days that a deal will get done this week, and I'm very happy that it looks like it will. I think we'll see Andre play quite a bit against Indy, if for no other reason than to gauge his conditioning with only about 6 or 7 practices remaining before Week 1 against Denver.

I think he'll be done by tomorrow morning, and he'll have Monday and Tuesday to practice before Thursday night's game against the Colts. I can easily see him working with the 3rd string and in some short yardage sets with the 2's.

It's probably good news for Dennis Roland, who probably stays as the backup RT until Andre is ready. As far as the active roster goes, it's probably an Andre for Augustus Parrish swap, but who's the backup LT? Could the Bengals trust Anthony Collins there, after working almost exclusively at RT this Summer? It's something that hasn't been mentioned much, so I guess we'll need to keep our fingers crossed on Whit being healthy for 16 games and especially early in the season.

Is anybody surprised at this turn of events?

It happens all the time. A player gets hungry and they finally decide to sign. Don't think for a minute that Mike Brown started feeling generous this weekend and pulled a few extra million from under his mattress.

Does anyone still think that going back into the draft next April was ever a real option for Andre?

One thing about life on the internet is that through time reality wins out over hyperbole.

after reading around here the last week i thought that everyone else seemed to think Andre would go back to the draft . . . but keels, greedy he may be, isn't that dumb. Would you rather take less money than this year's number 7 (aka 33 million) or get paid as a number 25+ pick next year, assuming you still go in the first round? And for all the ineptitude that we seem to see from the front office I really can't see them letting a first round pick, especially a number 6 offensive tackle that could very well play his whole career in cincy, ESPECIALLY when our offensive line is struggling, just slip back into the draft. This is huge -- glad he gets a few weeks of practice and hope its' him puking on the sidelines this thursday and not DeDe. They're going to work that boy something fierce.

No, he's not dumb and that's more than I can say about some of the comments I've read here and other places about Andre going back to the draft next Spring...
