derekshank
I checked the Vegas lines the other day, just to see if I am being disproportionately hard on our Bengals. Vegas has the over under at 6 wins which matches my prediction based on my "if I were a betting man, I'd say..." best guess. Would your money be on the Bengals making the playoffs (reason) or just your heart (faith)?Fair enough... but those lines are weighted with the perception of a team more than their actual skill level. They need people to bet on both sides of the number. Most NFL fans know the Bengals had only 4 wins last year, and are not likely to bet the over if the number was 8. Vegas picked 6 because approximately half of betting fans will think the Bengals still suck, while half think they can do better. It's hardly a true reflection of what the Bengals will actually do.That said... "If I were a betting man" I'd take the over on that 6 wins, but certainly wouldn't bet on them making the playoffs.I just thought I let anyone who wants to know... there was a Steelers fan I work with talking s**t about the Bengals and their HBO deal. He, as a typical Steelers fan, told me that Palmer sucked and they would get no more than 4 wins again this year... regardless if he was healthy or not.So I put my money where my mouth is. I told him the Vegas line was 6 wins. I told him if they got 7 wins, he owed me $5, and if they got 6 or fewer I owed him $5. He's not really a betting man... but he jumped all over it and told me it was the easiest $5 he's ever earned.I can't wait to take his nice crisp $5 bill and frame it, never to be spent. Any amount of money from a Steeler fan is worth more than it's actual monetary value.
walzav29
The fact is that the 2005 Cincinnati team did not have good character. When they tasted success they got chewed up by every fame and fortune cliche you could find. I believe that Marv has the guys he likes and will respond better. Everyone will be proved wrong and i'll be throwing a 100 bux with Vegas that has the Bengals winning over whatever the number is then. Bearcat1975
I question the sanity of anyone who bets on the Bengals.Either that person is a new fan who doesn't know any better, or he has completely lost touch with reality, or he likes to flush his money down the toilet, or he is letting his love for the team cloud his judgment. With a point spread or a point total, somebody who has watched every game of the season for a certain team (not to mention every game for the past however many years) stands a good chance of predicting the outcome. Picking the Bengals to win a game is far different than picking the Bengals to lose by less than 10 (or something such as that) when you've seen them play the same team several times. Not only that, you can bet on the Bengals not to win if you think the handicapper is off. All of those are examples of "betting on the Bengals." In short, betting on a team can have absolutely nothing to do with what you "hope" the outcome of the game to be. You said yourself that you wouldn't bet the under on 6 wins for the season, so you're pretty much just not a gambler I suppose. So, from the sidelines your comments about people who would bet seems a little......whimpy to me.

Other than copious use of smiley faces, I'm really having trouble seeing the worth in any of your posts lately. Do you even read what you're responding to? Did you read any of what I had to say? If you did, then your post ignored it. If you didn't, then what's the point of posting again. I'll repeat it for you slowly, you can bet on any team that you know a lot about and make money. You don't have to be a "homer" or have your "head in the sand" -- hell, I even said the smart bet may be on the other side. Moreover, when you're betting a point total, there's nothing in the bet that involves what side will win. In response to that you give me -- "betting on the Bengals isn't smart because they're not good." Nice work. Thanks for the effort. That's the equivalent of "the Bengals are a bunch of thugs because Chris Henry got arrested." I'm beginning to think your best work was in the Carson Palmer out before the opener thread, at least you put some "thought" into that.If you'd rather be a square than a wiseguy, that's fine with me. Enjoy the all-you-can-eat buffet and lame stage show.

Your posts don't offend me as a Bengals fan - they offend me as a statistician and gambler. One week last season, just for fun, I bet against the Bengals and for the Steelers. I never bet against the Bengals because I just can't do it and root for them at the same time, but I don't bet for them because you know...that would be stupid. So anyway, Bengals were the early game. They lost. Didn't cover the spread. As usual. Then Pittsburgh had the late game. They were losing at the end of the 4th quarter. "Well, looks like I broke even between the 2 games, but at least the Steelers lost so its isn't all bad," I thought to myself. Then at the last second, the Steelers got an INT and ran it back for a TD, winning the game and covering the spread.I was pretty conflicted. Enough so that I made a few rules. No more betting for the Steelers. No Betting for the Bengals of course, because again, that would be stupid. But also no betting against the Bengals until they have more than 8 losses. But if your angle here is that betting on the Bengals to do anything that benefits you is a smart thing...I'll let you run with that one...lol

BengalByTheBay
But if your angle here is that betting on the Bengals to do anything that benefits you is a smart thing...I'll let you run with that one...lolSo, let me get this straight. You bet against the Bengals and they lost and you bet for the Squeelers and they won, so you won your bets. But you felt bad because you think that your bet had something to do with the outcome? So, it's not just on this board that you vastly overestimate your importance in the universe. First, let me suggest that what's gonna happen is gonna happen regardless of whether you bet on it or not. Second, if it makes you feel bad to bet and win, you shouldn't bet. Third, if other people bet and win that pretty much does make that a smart thing. So, yeah, my angle is -- if you're gonna bet, bet and win. Does that make me smart? (Come on, this is an easy one...)So, back to my original point, if you know a lot about a team you can make smart bets and win and none of your categories of "people who bet on the Bengals are morons" really applies.Moral: Apparently, denial is your brain and a river runs though it.
