whizzo
working link:http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/rook...a5-70c27ad4d214nice to hear they're at least trying him at LT. if it doesn't work, move him to RT, or LG. but at least try him out at LT.EDIT: i also like that they're trying ReyRey at SAM and MIKE, and that Johnson is getting some SAM reps. zimmer will know how to use this kind of thing in his scheme. HairOnFire
First, I can't wait to see the first pictures of these guys wearing stripes. As for Smith starting on the left side in his first practice, it's not suprising based upon Marvin's comments made immediately after the draft. The real question is if they keep him there after getting their first looks.
chrishcovga
Ok, I didn't want to do it, especially after last year, but dammit .... After this draft , I had to turn my NFL Sunday Ticket back on!! Gotta see how well this team will perform with the influx of these new players. Also got something on my mind..... Our Runningbacks. Ok , I know Cedric Benson is our starter. Kenny Watson would be the primary backup, but there are no other spots guaranteed, let alone Kenny Watsons' considering his string of injuries. The two guys the Bengals added this year, Bernard Scott and Marlon Lucky both have what the team thought they were getting in Chris Perry. Especially Lucky !! I mean this kids junior stats, If he had left school then, he probably would have been at least a 3rd rounder if not better considering his height/weight/speed etc. All I'm saying is that Scott and Lucky ( especially Marlon Lucky ) could easily be the backups to Cedric Benson. Don't really understand Cincy's insistance to only keeping 4 runningbacks with the fullback included.???The glory days of the Bengals, We carried 5 or 6 runningbacks . Let's test my memory of the '88 team. James Brooks, Ickey Woods, Mark Logan, Stanley Wilson, Stanford Jennings, anyone else I'm forgetting...?? I think Lucky is going to pleasantly surprise you guys, and he's my leading candidate to make the team next to the draft picks.

TJJackson
Well, naturally they want to evaluate if Smith can handle LT duties, and quickly decide if they believe he can, and then - if he does not make the grade - get him over to RT and keep him there going forwardAfter all, it is best to get a rookie as many reps as you can at one spot so that they have the best chance of handling that one spot. If they give Big Andre half his snaps at RT and half at LT, he will not be as effective as he could have been at eitherBottom line.....if he can be dominant at LT, we get much better value out of him than if he is dominant elsewhere

ArmyBengal
This shouldn't suprise anyone in the least. It's just their first practice. Isn't it just the rookies anyway ??Chris, nice sig and if we are picking that low in the first Bryant would HAVE to be a consideration. I still think I'd rather defense again in the first, but understanding WR will probably get addressed earlier next year. Give me Marshawn Gilyard out of Cincinnati in the 2nd and I'd be happy.Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing some video of the practices. I can't watch videos at work... Kazkal
My only thing about him playing LT is if he'll have same impact to running game....But him & whitworth should be able make some holes ...Either way hopefully between Maualuga & Johnson Marvin & zimmer can find their joker aka Peter Boulaware type guy... can't wait Ok , I know Cedric Benson is our starter. Kenny Watson would be the primary backup, but there are no other spots guaranteed, let alone Kenny Watsons' considering his string of injuries.I think Scott wins 3# myself they drafted and took a chance on the guy for a reason....I also wouldn't mind seeing us carry 5 backs if they feel Chub.Johnson is the best choice this year at fullback but keep Fui on the roster for the future. HairOnFire
Rookie Minicamp: Day 1 morning practice thoughtsPosted by JoeReedy at 5/1/2009 1:29 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com Seeing players running around in shorts and without pads makes it a little hard to get a gague on, but here are a couple of thoughts after the morning session:* Quan Cosby did not participate in the morning session but will participate in the afternoon workout. He now is at Paul Brown Stadium and has signed his contract.* Freddie Brown made a nice grab on a 50-yard bomb from Billy Farris.* Nice intensity from Rey Maualuga during the workout. Also soft spoken while coming off the field. Mike Zimmer kind've said it best about the immediate expectations surrounding Maualuga when he said: "You want us to say the guy is a lock for Canton, but it's the first day."* Andre Smith looked solid during position workouts.* RB Marlon Lucky appeared to tweak a hamstring.More during the afternoon session. AGrizzlyBaer
http://www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/s...on/chickludwig/from chick ludwig‘Hey, Rook:’ Smith’s anchored at left tackle; Maualuga oozes intensityBy Chick Ludwig | Friday, May 1, 2009, 01:56 PMSMITH’S A VERY LARGE MAN,MAUALUGA READY TO PLAYDEMAND FOR MAUALUGA JERSEYSGOING THROUGH THE PBS ROOFThe first words Andre Smith heard when he walked on the field for his first NFL practice:“You’re the left tackle.”Which is exactly where he wants to be.He said he wants to play left tackle “forever.”He looked good, too, taking the right angles and giving the blocking pads a strong pop. His legs are so thick they may not fit into garbage cans. Dude sure looks like he can anchor.Smith’s wearing uniform number 71, too. He reminds everybody of Willie Anderson. The human interstate highway. The new “I-71.”OTHER IMPRESSIONS• Rey Maualuga — who worked out at Sam linebacker (strong side) for the first time in his life — apologized to Bengals fans for being angry that he dropped to the second round as the No. 38 overall draft pick.He said he’s eager to team with fellow Trojan Keith Rivers and wreak havoc. Rey said that beginning his senior year of high school, he adds one tatoo a year. His long, scraggly black hair and tatoos speak to his Samoan culture.• The subject is DE Michael Johnson. I want you to think two words — “Jevon Kearse.”• His teammates at Missouri called TE Chase Coffman “The Stud.” He’s chillin’ this weekend while the fractured fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot heals. Coffman said he’ll be ready to go for OTAs. His eyes lit up at the notion of catching passes from Carson Palmer.• Jonathan Luigs was immediately anchored at center, wearing uniform No. 50. Coaching staff loves him. It couldn’t believe he was available in the fourth round. I look for him to start the season opener against Denver.• Kevin Huber couldn’t wipe the smile off his face. He prepped at McNicholas High School, punted at the University of Cincinnati and is now a Bengal. He unleashed some booming punts with his strong left foot. He’s shocked he’s the only punter on the team after the Bengals dumped Kyle Larson and Ryan Plackemeier. Huber admits his agent his happy, too. Huber has plenty of leverage in negotiations.• Cornerback Morgan Trent shows good size and speed. He’s only got one problem. He wears uniform No. 25. I can’t remember the last good player to wear 25 for the Bengals.• Bernard Scott looks “sudden” with outstanding burst through the line of scrimmage.QUICK HITTERSSeveral veterans are here (Keith Rivers, Andrew Whitworth and Jerome Simpson) watching the rookies and offering encouragement … QB Todd Boeckman looked every bit as good as Billy Farris … There are lots of modest sedans, including plenty of rentals, in the parking lot. Come the season, we’ll see more luxury cars.
Kazkal
Watching the feed I just like the Presence Maualuga gives just feel like that man is going to be a badass o_O...Question about M.Johnson playing SLB has there been a Good to Great LB who stands 6'7? Because I wonder if they'll have Maualuga start at SLB learn the defense and prepare to be MLB future which would give them time to develop M.johnson in to joker passrush specialist SLB which Marvin has been wanting since he got here.DEMAND FOR MAUALUGA JERSEYS I can't wait to get mine.• Rey Maualuga — who worked out at Sam linebacker (strong side) for the first time in his life — apologized to Bengals fans for being angry that he dropped to the second round as the No. 38 overall draft pick.Don't be sorry Rey because I know most of us were shocked as hell you fell in our laps at

icehole3
watched the video at Bengals.com, my thoughts were, damn Johnson is big, Rey may be feeling the hamstring a little, Scott looked like a blur, ASmith is big but seemed pretty quick to me. HAPPYJAQ
I'm getting a good feeling about Scott. Just watching the clip around the 6:50 mark and you can tell he has some real burst and suddeness. "Downtown" Freddie Brown looks to have some good hands, too. I think he has a real chance to make the roster as the 6th WR.

Purify has the physical tools to really excel, it's jut a matter of where is his head at? 6'3 224 lbs. and 4.4 speed?? Just a guess of who our 6 will be. 1. Chad 2. Coles3. Caldwell4. Henry5. Simpson6. Mr. Irrelevant.........??? Antonio Chatman? Man I hope not. Maybe Quan Cosby?? Urrutia and Purify on the practice squad again ??
