BengalszoneBilly Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 STALLWORTH DETAINED IN PEDESTRIAN FATALITYPosted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2009, 12:22 p.m. EDTFriday was a good day for Browns receiver Donte’ Stallworth. As of 4:00 p.m. EDT, he officially earned a $4.875 million roster bonus. But Saturday is turning out to be a very bad day for the one-time first-round pick. According to CBS4 in Miami, Stallworth has been detained after an automobile accident that killed a pedestrian.Per the report, the accident happened at the intersection of Fisher Island Drive and the MacCarthur Causeway in Miami. We’ve separately been advised that police are investigating whether Stallworth was driving under the influence. According to a source with knowledge of the investigation, authorities performed a mandatory blood draw on Stallworth, and they are awaiting the results of the test. We’re also told that prosecutors are involved, and charges could be filed very soon.Stallworth, per the source, was driving a Bentley. As our own Aaron Wilson discovered while chasing the tip we’d received (yeah, we were responsible and tried to confirm before posting . . . for a change), Stallworth was arrested in 2006 while driving a Bentley. According to USLaw.com, Stallworth was busted after he refused to turn of his cell phone and shut off the engine after a traffic stop for driving with an expired license.Wilson is in the process of gathering more details, and he might be posting a follow-up soon. And let’s not forget that someone died what by all appearances was a preventable death. We hope that, regardless of what happened, the tragedy will cause the Donte’ Stallworths and Albert Haynesworths of the NFL to be a lot more careful in the future when driving their cars.Coincidentally, Stallworth and Haynesworth both played college football at Tennessee, and both were picked in the first round of the 2002 draft, only two selections apart. ArmyBengal Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 This would be the Browns luck right there. Pay the guy 4+ million in bonuses only to have him go to jail... Quote
whizzo Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 ooh, traffic collision (not accident. traffic collision). bad, bad. of course, i don't see why this warrants any more attention than the hundreds of other deaths in traffic every year. Quote
COB Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 I just sent Chad a bus ticket to the intersection of Fisher Island Drive and the MacCarthur Causeway in Miami. Quote
whizzo Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 yeah, great idea. try to get our perhaps last remaining playmaker to die. Quote

BengalszoneBilly Posted March 15, 2009 Author Report Posted March 15, 2009 To dispense with the jokes, this just in per the same source:PROSECUTORS POISED TO CHARGE STALLWORTH WITH DUIPosted by Mike FlorioAs authorities in South Florida wait for the results of a blood draw performed on Browns receiver Donte’ Stallworth, a source with knowledge of the investigation tells us that prosecutors are preparing an indictment for DUI manslaughter, under the assumption that the results will show that Stallworth’s blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit of 0.08 percent when he collided with a pedestrian, who later died.Per the source, Stallworth admitted to drinking at least four Patrons and two Margaritas. A separate source called that information “basically right,” but added that Stallworth contends he had his last drink at midnight. The incident occurred after 7:00 a.m. local time. We’re also told that Stallworth claimed in his statement to police that he saw the man crossing the street from a distance, and flashed the high beams and honked the horn of the Bentley he was driving. Apparently, there’s an issue as to whether Stallworth could have taken evasive action because of a barrier along the median. We’re told that Stallworth is badly shaken by the news that the pedestrian had died. And, frankly, he should be. Apart from the fact that he was involved in an accident that claimed a man’s life, Stallworth could be facing serious criminal liability, if the pending test reveals an impermissibly high concentration of alcohol in his blood. It appears Stallworth is done. My condolences to the dead mans family. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 This is terrible. Why do people drink and drive, I will never get it. And the fact that he was drunk so early in the mourning makes me think this guy has other issues as well.He should be prosecuted to the fullest extent. Quote

ArmyBengal Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Well, Stallworth was reported to be out all night long and drinking well into it, so I don't think is was a matter of waking up at 6am and hitting the bottle.Sad for the loss of life... Quote
HairOnFire Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 A witness claims the car ahead of Stallworth stopped for a yellow/red light, prompting Stallworth to go around in an attempt to beat the signal. He then strikes the pedestrian. The investigation is focused on whether the light had changed to red, the location of the pedestrian when hit (Was he in a crosswalk?), and the speed of Stallworth's car at the time of impact. Also, it isn't Stallworth's first alcohol related problem, and despite his claim he stopped drinking hours earlier it's probably not a good sign that he's confessed to having consumed at least six shots of Tequilla. After all, that's more of a Kenny Chesney song than a proper legal defense strategy. Quote

The legal limit is .08. The Miami Herald also cited an unnamed source as saying that Stallworth’s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit. The Miami Beach Police Department refused to confirm the reports. Ed Griffith, spokesman for Miami-Dade County prosecutor Katherine Fernandez Rundle, would say only that the investigation is focusing on whether alcohol was a factor in the death of 59-year-old Mario Reyes.Reyes was struck and killed by a Bentley driven by Stallworth about 7 a.m. Saturday morning. Reyes, a crane operator, had just gotten off work and was trying to catch a bus when he was hit.No charges have been filed against Stallworth, 28. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, nor his attorney, Robert Switke, returned calls from The Associated Press seeking comment. Stallworth issued a statement Wednesday saying he was “grief stricken” over Reyes’ death. If Stallworth was drunk, he could be charged with DUI manslaughter which carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence.Stallworth signed a seven-year, $35 million contract with the Browns as a free agent before last season but was injured much of the year. He previously played for New England, Philadelphia and New Orleans in the NFL and played college football at Tennessee. Quote
gregstephens Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 This would be the Browns luck right there. Pay the guy 4+ million in bonuses only to have him go to jail...No...that would historically be the Bengals' luck. I don't wish bad on anyone on a personal level, but from a football perspective, it feels good to see the splatter happen to all these other teams. See, ESPN, it isn't just the Bengals. Quote

Obviously the dude wasnt at a bar/club until that time, SO, he was most likely at someone's house. My question is....Why not stay wherever the hell you are until you sober up dumba$$. If it was like 2 or 3 and he was leaving the club, thats bad, but if its 7AM and you decide to drive your drunk a$$ home from a buddy's pad..Thats just plain idiotic. So sad, apparently this guy was a crane operator just getting off work, and heading to the bus stop to go home. SAD. Quote
