Prediction: Bengals beat Jets, Steelers

By Chick Ludwig | Friday, October 10, 2008, 11:14 AM

I see something in Marvin Lewis’ eyes.

I hear something in Marvin Lewis’ voice.

Intensity … and … resolve.

I believe Sunday, Oct. 12, is the day the Cincinnati Bengals scratch out their first victory of 2008.

Brett Favre is a lean, mean INTERCEPTION throwin’ machine.

The final: Bengals 24, Jets 20.

And while I’m at it, I’ll just go ahead and say once the Bengals get this win, another will follow — quickly.

On Sunday, Oct. 19 at Paul Brown Stadium, the Bengals will defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I know what loyal LUDWIG AT LARGE readers are thinking and saying:

“Chick, what R you smokin’?”

That’s fine. Go ahead & rip me if the Bengals lose to the Jets.

But feel free to praise me if the Bengals win.

And if the Bengals lose, I can only imagine what PBS will look like a week from Sunday.

Lots of black & gold.

INITIAL REACTION

From Keith in Cincinnati: “Chick, is it free liquor day at the paper? Back-to-back wins for the Bengals against teams each coming off the bye? I say Jets win 30-20 with Favre throwing 3 TD passes. If the Bengals are 0-6, PBS will look like Heinz Field next week, Steelers win going away.”

i couldn't find the line on the game. i wouldn't think it's ridiculous, though. it's not like the jets are superbowl contenders at 2-2, especially considering they have a QB in his vanity season pitching INTs like santa hands out toys.

i think chick made that prediction under the assumption palmer would play. as the dayton daily news reported today, fitz will start. also, palmer admitted that his injury will be a week to week thing all season long, that he'll not be able to completely recouperate until the off-season to give the elbow total rest.

and i'm sure MB views this as not being lewis' fault (which it isn't obviously), thereby giving him free reign to totally have a bad season. that's just it, the mind-set here is all is lost, whereas other teams do their best to pick up the pieces and go out with a positive attitude (just guessing here).

i have to admit that i thought this may be the week, too, but i doubt it now. fitz got burned in his trial by fire, but i'm not sure many other back-ups would have done much better. protect the man for two seconds and judge him then, says i, because the list of excuses is growing thin (other than the usual set of excuses).

One problem here, cowboy. Favre may historically dole out the INTs with a fair amount of liberality, but in case you haven't noticed, we ain't making any this season. Santa can hand out the toys, but there are no takers on this team. That said, Favre is still too explosive and the Jets' defense doesn't suck, which means we are in for another long game.

Fitz got burned by fire in a game against a team much worse than the Jets. That Cleveland shellacking, and I say that obviously not because of the final score but how poorly the Bengals played, isn't going to get any better against either the Jets or Steelers.

that line sounds about right, i think. given that the home team gets 3 automatically, i don't think anyone expects a blow-out of epic proportions here. sounds like a 21-17 game to me. i have to wonder if that line is with fitz or palmer to start?

true, fitz got burned. charbroiled, even. if the grill marks have faded enough, i'm expecting that the additional practice and preparation will serve him well. i'm just saying that if the same O-line they had against dallas shows up then he won't have many excuses not to perform (and if they can run the ball better this time). not claiming a win here, just expecting an improvement.

you're right, just because favre tosses int's that's no reason to believe the bengals will be there to catch 'em. but, like they say, even a blind hog finds a truffle every now and then.

a long game. have to agree again. i won't be shocked if cincy pulls one out, though. surprized? very, but i think my couch cushions are safe from being plotzed on. glad i forgot to play the football pool this week, i'd have picked the bengals figuring palmer to play. palmer in and bringing their A game, they could have pulled it off. the jury is still out on fitz, i think, and i don't feel as if the rest will step up their game to overcome such a serious setback.

i'm probably being a lot more lenient on fitz than i should be, but i believe in giving the guy a chance eventhough his past starts didn't make the cut. given an honest second chance and he goes splat, i'll listen more closely to those who already consider him a bum. if the o-line does their black hole trick and fitz turns out to be scapegoat, well, what can you realistically expect from a back-up anyway?

is it just me or am i sounding more like a character out of a bad noir novel all the time? consider yourselves lucky i blanked on 'speak like a pirate day.'

chick is on crack, farve can throw 5 int's and we will still lose. i look for us to get blown out, score will be 38-3 jets!

Must be some really good crack. The Bengals are in the game at the half!

I'm sorry...don't forget there is a fourth quarter in this game. We all know how the Bengals do in fourth quarters of games in which they are still contention.

More of Chick's pre-game observations, "As for Fitzpatrick, Bengals fans should expect a solid performance because he’s gotten a bulk of the repetitions in practice the past two weeks." The years of losing have finally taken their toll on his psyche, he is now buying into the line of bull fed to the fanbase every week. I'm starting to think he may be part of their scouting staff.
