11 pro bowls. Gene Upshaw's union head career sort of overshadowed a really great playing career. I give him credit for recognizing that his members would be best served by going along for the very profitable ride as the NFL became the money machine it is today. Instead of fostering an us versus them atmosphere (a strategy often popular with membership thus helpful in getting oneself reelected), Upshaw withstood criticism that he was too close to NFL management, that he was an NFL puppet and a stooge. And his union members made sick cash as a result. Of course 40% of that money turned into precipitation in strip clubs, 40% went to child support, and the other 20% went for pit bull expenses, but Upshaw couldn't really tell his members how to spend their money, could he?

Wow. Been out of the loop for a few days. Didn't even read about the cancer and now he's dead. Very quick, which is best for him. Thoughts are with his family and friends.
