Chad to be traded on June 1st

Recommended Posts

If it is true that Chad's salary cap hit will be reduced from 8 mil to 5 mil on June 1st, I think he will be traded on or around that date. We drafted 2 solid receivers and didn't address our RB needs. Expect a trade for a solid 2nd tier RB and a 1st and 4th round draft pick next year. OR, throw in a big starting DT instead of a RB, and use the extra pick to grab a starting RB next draft. Sounds good on paper.

I think you might be right. The fact that they passed on RBs and were luckwarm about getting D-line help early makes me think something is up. Plus he's been quiet this week.

Possible destinations could be Dallas, Philly, Washington or Miami.

STOP IT!

If Chad was going to be traded he would have been traded by pick #22 of the first round. Chad is a Bengal and will be a Bengal and the fans (as well as Chad himself) better get used to it.

You can tell them all you want Wraith, but they just refuse to believe it. Dream on children...dream on.

Not a chance. If anything, the bengals would want to take the cap hit now and get it over with instead of spreading it into next year and being limited in what they can do financially next year.

It wouldn't limit them. In fact, were they to deal Chad after June 1 and split the hit as two $4 million chunks, it would actually free up cap space this year and next, since the hit if Chad stays is larger than that.

The real problem with the theory is that, per the talking heads over at espn.com, they can already do this. The new CBA allows teams to cut up to two players a year before June 1, but designate them as post-June-1 cuts for accounting purposes, and apparently this can be done with trades as well.

Now, maybe the Bengals are just waiting to see if any team gets desperate -- say, their star wideout gets hurt in training camp -- and comes to them with a blockbuster offer, but all signs right now point to Chad staying in stripes.

Personally, I have no dreams, desires, or any other particular hopes with regard to Chad Johnson. That said, I am one that suspects (expects?) him to be gone sometime in June or July. I base this primarily on them taking the 3 receivers in the draft, together with the information that they were 'close' to trading him already, but wanting a player combined with the picks. What has changed? Well, of course the 2008 draft pick is gone. So what? If no one blinks on this, something sweet(er) will come around the corner and it will all end with a handful of future picks and some OL, DL, or RB -type player. Hey, at the very least it is fun conjecture. If it doesn't, happen, I don't care about that either. He will either come around due to the team doing surprisingly good, hatred of losing cash, a change of heart, or some combination of the three. Or he will sit and whine. But my gut says he will be moved someway somehow between now and the end of July.

Now, I get the fact that he will probably stay here for this season. Do we think he'll sit out though? I don't. Not from Chad's perspective or the Bengals' perspective. He'll play and most likely put up good numbers. That is to say, I wouldn't expect the Bengals to be so principled as to piss away any value and make him sit the next three years out (at least I hope to God they aren't). He plays this season and we're not down to the bare bones at WR and he keeps his value high and thus makes a trade more likely for him and the Bengals. Everyone wins. Chad eventually gets out of Dodge and the Bengals get a year of production out of him and have made their brave, valiant stand against the cry baby athletes of this world whilst getting value for him in return.

Or maybe not and the Bengals single handedly change the entire landscape of professional sports across the globe. :wanky rolling eyes smiley:

You have to add into the fact that one of the teams said to be interested in Chad, the Cowboys, did not draft one of their obvious needs in a WR. Something is afoot!

... and this is where the 'dreaming' part comes in. If I had to dream of a trade, and it involved the Cowboys, I would go all the way with that and dare to consider one Marion Barber be in there! Now that's a dream.

My brain's fuzzy, but I could have sworn I read somewhere that the June 1 exception doesn't apply to trades, just cuts. I gots no evidence though.

As for trading partners - looks like the Cowboys. Jerry didn't get anybody sexy in the draft, being reduced to drafting McFadden's understudy at Arkansas. I'd start there. Since the Redskins got two premier WRs in the draft, I'd probably count them out, although you never know what Snyder would do if Jones looked like he was going to pick Chad up.

If I were the Bengals, I'd look at the job Scott Boras does every year pitting the Sox and Yankees against each other, and do that.

Brilliant

Who's your trading partner?

Hmmm...

Here are some for starters:

Chicago - #1 WR is currently.....? Mark Bradley?

Washington - Ego driven. they got Thomas in the draft but Moss and Randel-el are the only legit WR's there.

TB - Clayton and Galloway...they need a #1

Dallas - Also Ego driven..Owens, Glenn (injuries) and Crayton....CJ gives Romo a #1b

NYJ - after Coles there is..Cotchery, Clowney, ....basically noone.

that should be enough to get the phones going...

DC, I believe you are correct. Merrill Hodge said in the pre-draft coverage that the Bengals would have to take the full cut this year if they were to trade this weekend which would mean that they would have to cut at least one starter (he mentioned Rudi) and possibly two. This was his reasoning that he believed there would be no trade of Chad this weekend.

Good call on Chicago!! They have Benson and they took Forte.. So maybe we could squeeze a RB out of the deal also... They also have no one to throw the ball to their WRs also... This is all a pipe dream I fear... Chad will be a Bengal till his contract is up... Remember Marvin calling out Chad to stick to his words, I think that will also apply to MB and ML...

I thought so too, but in one of the Chad pieces on espn.com leading up to the draft, they quoted an unnamed NFL GM as saying that the Bengals could indeed split the hit, and I have to assume the guy knows his job.

Ok, so you do this:

1. trade CJ and Rudi to Chicago for Benson + picks or Mark Anderson

2. Cut Thornton and Dexter Jackson

done.

of course this is only to point out it is possible. it won't happen but it is possible.

Putting 2 and 2 together, I have to assume the source was Matt Millen. ;)

Not saying if that's a good trade or not, just saying that Merrill believed that the cap issue was a big reason why the Bengals didn't take the Washington deal and would probebly not entertain any other deal.

The cap issues are pretty trivial. I read somewhere that Chad would even repay some of his bonus if he got a new deal with his new team. Even if he doesn't repay a cent, the team could just restructure Carson to convert some of his salary to bonus and prorate it. With Chad's contract removed from future years, the team would gain cap space. Of course the team could also cut deadwood like Thornton and Rudi. We're actually not even up against the cap anyway even if we take Chad's full hit in 08 and don't cut anyone.

I think it will be good for Cincy to trade Chad after June 1. In fact, you almost have to. He will be over 31 when the season begins in '09, and could possibly be had in the Summer for at least a 1st and 2nd in the draft. I think that you take that and have 4 of the top 105 picks next year. With what I believe what was a strong draft next year (on top of a MONSTER draft this year, just wait) and in playing an "easier" schedule in '09, you can position yourself for a sure fire Super Bowl run for the next 3-4 years beginning in '09. Now is the pefect time to start acquiring more young talent.

Think about this.....

We are SOLID at most positions (at least on paper, right now) on the team. Imagine having the chance to take the BPA regardless of position. Has that ever happened here? That is how the New Englans, Indiapolis' and Pittsburghs stay on top. They never draft for need and just stockpile (example: Rashard Mendenhall/Limas Sweed/Dennis Dixon). With another strong draft, we could be that.

ENOUGH with the trade chad, stay Chad routine already !!

The Bengals drafted a very similiar player to Carl Pickens with Jerome Simpson. They've added what amounts to a 3rd receiver in Andre Caldwell .

And considering what Urrutia has to compete with, Maxwell, Chatman, Holt, - He probably makes the squad too !

WE drafted 3 receivers !

Whether Chad plays or NOT !!

Chad Johnson, are you listening...........? Come Closer.............Make sure the Camera sees this..............

CheckMate!
