2nd Round: Jerome Simpson

Alright, I have to say.

I love how every year the same crap goes down on this board.

Everyone was uninspired by the Leon Hall pick, and he led our team in INT's as a rook. No one knows who Domata Peko is, and therefore he sucks. Marvin White? Robert Geathers? The list goes on and on. Just because we don't hear of people (or many of you don't), doesn't mean that they aren't good - or even better than the players you had been set on. Other than character flaws (Thurman, Henry, Nicholson, Rucker, etc), and bad luck (Kieft, Irons, etc.), I've been almost completely behind the picks since marvin has been here. OK, maybe not Ratliff, and def not Perry, but everyone's allowed a couple of mistakes, right?

What we are seeing today is a team that has been weathering a storm of uncertainty at a couple of positions (how many dependable NFL starts do we have at LB w/out aging Dhani; and our #1 and #3 receivers may never play here again). We at least have bodies at the DT position, and historically it's a position with a very high bust factor in early rounds. I'm happy to get a couple of big bodies on both lines a little later in the draft.

BTW, I hope they draft RB Jalon Parmele in the 4th, and I wouldn't be upset if they took him with their second 3rd either. Even though most of you don't know who he is, it doesn't mean he isn't going to be a star.

There's another WR we've never heard of from San Diego State that I hope we draft in the 6th or 7th too (Chad Schilens). And that will be a good pick, even though he doesn't have a big name, either.

I'm really curious how all of these people, who basically do nothing but followed internet generated hype (as opposed to actually REALLY breaking down tape of ALL of the prospects), can get so upset when the Bengals pass on a pick that has sex appeal.(that every other team has passed on up to that point to).

Having said that, I am downright depressed we didn't do more to get Ellis.

Totally agree, and let me just add that the tingling and stinging feeling we are all experiencing is the butt jam we got in the form of missing Ellis....so let's not take it out on Simpson, which I think will prove to be a very smart selection, even if it does not seem as obvious at the moment. heck we could dump an r6 and r7 to get another r4.

r3a - DT

r3b - LB/CB

r4 - Another WR or RB

r5 - OL

r6a - OL/DT

r6b - LB/DE

r7a - WR or RB

r7b - DB

Well let's hope that a competent DT is still available in the third. Okam will probably be picked right ahead of us in the 3rd. Still we can always draft just another guy to fill in at DT. It's worked for us so far. Just get a big fat guy and stick him in there.

btw, from the pro day files:

Coastal Carolina (March 28)

Eleven NFL teams sent representatives, and Bengals WR coach Mike Sheppard ran the workout for WR prospect Jerome Simpson, who ran outdoors on a grass field…

» WR Jerome Simpson (6-1 ¾, 199): Had a 41 ½-inch vertical jump, kept everything else from the combine. Had a good workout.

As far as I know, he also worked out Kelly, and you can bet got an up close look at Sweed as well...

Think how mad we'd be if we took M. Kelly with his azzhole attitude and slow-azz 40. I'm sure we could rationalize it since he pays in the big 12....

This guy Schillens is another massive sleeper...grab him!

How about Steve Johnson form UK...guy is very very very solid...and will be there late....

I think guys like Owens, Moss, Rice, Colston, Marshall, and every other WR taken from a small school is more than enough evidence to sugest this could a very big steal....

Ok, done with my hype of Simspon. Now the guy needs to prove it all again in the NFL.

Speaking of getting jammed with Ellis, does anyone else get the sneaking suspicion that SoP is kind of despised in the NFL? as in, no one cares to deal with them?

I do.

Somebody please just tell me why we picked Jerome Simpson over Malcom Kelly, and DeSean Jackson?

Malcolm Kelly is too slow to replace Henry, and Jackson is too short to replace Henry.

Granted, I'd have dug the Jackson pick too... for completely different reasons.

It doesnt matter if Jackson was to small, if he has speed, he can out run defenders, and be wide open to catch the ball.

this logic cannot be debated....Mr. Jackson is pretty fast. So was Renaldo Nehamiah...and if you need to ask who that is,you won't understand the drafting of WR's.

This is probably a stupid question, but what is "SoP"? People write it all the time, and I have no idea what it means.

But anyway, Parker/Mendenhall/McGahee/even fat bastard Lewis can enjoy another year of running through our D.

I mean, were the trade efforts for a big DT just complete bulls**t by the Bengals FO? Did they forget all of a sudden how badly we need quality at that position? Was it all an elaborate bluff?

Thanks TDB. Now it makes sense. I was trying to figure out how "Standard Operating Procedure" fit into these statements.

Random thoughts....

I don't hate the pick. Simply put, I haven't seen enough of Simpson to love or hate him. That said, I have my doubts that he was a better choice than Limas Sweed, a player whose skill set and character I found very attractive.

Because I don't know much about him I can't gripe about the value. I do know Simpson showed up on plenty of rankings as a player on the rise and I've seen him projected to go as early as the 2nd round and as late as the 5th. And some of the projections that had him going later actually had him higher ranked than better known players.

I thought Simpson was impressive at the combine and I wish now I had watched him more closely. (The NFL Network usually repeats the coverage after the draft.)

I guess a 3rd WR was a need, sort of, but to be perfectly honest I'm tired of being the team that always passes the ball.

And of course the hardest thing to take is knowing the draft fell perfectly in the 2nd round, yet the player I coveted was passed on. Maybe that turns out to be no big deal or maybe it's something that irks me until I die. Who knows? But making matters worse was seeing that players value confirmed when Laws was selected one pick later.
